[QUOTE="ktr5010, post: 6340871, member: 907253" Sure they try to get the best quality barrels possible, but they don't know if a specific barrel they are aging beer in is more special than the one next to it. .[/QUOTE]

And that is the "money" question I want to know the answer to- what made that barrel "special" for it to yield that result. Was it wetter/drier than others, did it leak more/less, etc. I hope they are doing "forensics" to figure this money question out, because if they do, it yields better brews for the consumer and more reputation/$$$ for Rev.

Are the barrels not labeled with whatever is and was in them, etc?

Say... they'd have one barrel from Pappy Van Winkle 15 and then another barrel from Maker's Mark, they're likely going to label which is which. And I imagine they also document the position the barrel was in, when it was filled, etc. etc. AFAIK, they don't just buy a bunch of barrels, fill em with beer, and then just sit on it and wait. There's probably a ton of documentation going into it. I can't imagine them just filling them and walking away...

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, then ignore the above. Or maybe we're misunderstanding what they're saying a "money barrel" is? IDK.

Have the League of Heroes 12 packs dropped yet in Chicago?

I think you are misunderstanding. If they have what look to be 12 identical Woodford Reserve Barrels from the same batch all filled with the same beer, and when testing all 12, one produces such a unique flavor that they opt not to blend it with the other 11 barrels and have it as a stand alone "single" "money barrel". There are so many variables that could cause the flavor differentiation it would be a complex undertaking.

I did a crap job of getting my thoughts into words. The barrels are labeled from the distillery and Rev writes what beer is on them as well. I was saying that it would be difficult for Rev to know the provenance of each barrel they receive from whoever the barrel distributor is. The distilleries may know that but when they sell them to the middle man barrel distributor I doubt that information is passed along to the either or both parties.

Probably. I'll put partial blame on the phrasing of the other guy's post.

And I agree with the rest of your post.

Makes more sense now. You kinda did(no offense)

Yeah, that's difficult to track. It would be near impossible to determine what created that "money barrel" if we're discussing 12 of the same barrels from the same place with the same contents in each.

The coffee beans were added to the fermenter whole!!!! Whoa.

Guess I'll give that a shot next time I make cold brew.

Isn't Boss Hog $450 a bottle RETAIL? If I had to guess, the term money Barrel is actually referring to the quality of the whiskey or the cost itself. -like the colloquial phrase, "That's money!"

Unless it tasted terrible, I am not at all surprised that the Boss Hog barrels are being "selected" for single Barrel variants.

Wow 2 wasted opportunities. Could've had one bottle for a shelf display/conversation piece and chugged the other bottle.

This is the pretty correct answer regarding the “money barrel” term. All barrels destined to be blended get QC checked and it is at this point the money barrel is selected. The big blend should yield a well rounded example of the BA beer whereas the money barrel is kept separate to display a unique or outstanding quality, a outlier if you will.

I saw folks doing this at the VSOJ release and realized how much I probably missed out on when I finally got inside. Though I think it’d be a good courtesy to let the folks around you know you’re going for drafts and they’ll honor your spot and you’d do the same for them. I’m going solo to Friday’s the release and the last thing I need is to argue with other beer nerds that I’m not line cutting.

Yeah, having a buddy system works great so one person can hold the spot in line while the other goes inside to get pours. I've done that before and it's worked great. However, I was solo at the last release, and made friends with a couple in front of me and we took turns going in to get pours, so it worked out just as well. I basically told them they could have some of the beer I bring out if they hold my spot, but then they reciprocated by going in to get pours as well.

This sounds like a prelude to an “after dark beer advocate” tale.

@Veliksta1 Kinda feel cheap asking, but I received some rev gift cards for the holidays, can these be used for the release Friday to Purchase 4 packs? I assume pours will still be cash only and not usable there. Not sure if it’s limited to more of a brewpub/brewery non release day. Figured I’d ask here rather than going in with any assumption.
