And I think this is largely what happened. JiL wasn't a good enough beer to stand up to a $20 price tag once the FOMO wore off and new competitors with better product and cheaper pricing entered the market. That's why it is a shelfie at $18 or whatever it goes for in retail. The market dictates...

I believe the batch variance is what turned it into a shelfie, if every batch tasted like the early batches I think people would still be fine with paying $20/4 pk.
Once the batches went down in quality there was no way to justify the price for a product that was inferior to other NEIPAs that cost less

Good point, maybe people would be more inclined to pay $20 for a skillfully crafted 4 pack rather than one that was lucked into.

I'm not sure that "lucked in to" is accurate because my understanding was that Chris wasn't the driving force behind the IPAs & the brewer that was, left. Once he left all of the hops went downhill & it took a while to get the quality back

Most of Narrow Gauge's DDH beers are $18-$20.

Would they cost more if they did?

I hadn’t heard this before. Makes sense. Where did the brewer go to?

Picked up a four pack of their cans the other day after I saw that they are saying the recipe for Juice is back to how it used to be. I don't know if I ever had the "original" version but I still get this musky flavor to it. I am wondering if it is their yeast strain as I have noticed it some of their other IPA's? I've also had some draft pours of Juice and some different IPA's from them that it wasn't as noticeable and some that were.

I just buy it only at the brewery after having a taste on tap. I really don’t think it’s that inconsistent- it’s just kind of average always! Obligatory and cromulent have always been where it’s at anyways. Transient remains a fantastic small brewery to me.

Have to say I've had juice is loose a couple times and while goodwas not blown away. Now obligatory, one more wave mosaic and hazy like a fox were awesome imo

Cromulent still tops for me. JIL is way too inconsistent. And when you pay top tier price for it, you expect much better quality and consistency.
