Tired Hands Saturated Indigo Light Blackberry Maple Syrup Vanilla Barleywine

Those were some entertaining football games this evening — although I know I certainly would have enjoyed the Eagles beating the Patriots two years in a row in the Super Bowl.

New Beer #2 comes to me courtesy of fellow Iggle fan @larryi86, possibly with an assist from CFL enthusiast @CanConPhilly. I noticed Tired Hands canning this barleywine in the fall at a release I couldn’t make, and they hooked me up. Solid BAs right there.

There certainly are a fair amount of blackberries in this beer. To start, it pours a murky maroon color with close to a finger of purple-and-tan-tinted head. It leaves light sheets of lacing for a while, but they don’t stick to the glass forever.

I get berries, pancake, light caramel and light earthy, floral hops in the nose. By pancakes, I mean cakey, doughy malt — not maple syrup.

Dull, muted, earthy flavors dominate the taste — a mix of earthy hops and some wooly blackberry character. There’s some light caramel and toffee malts beneath the earthiness, with light berry sweetness and maple mixed in, too.

It’s fairly light-bodied for the style, slightly sticky, with a little more carbonation than necessary.

The best way for me to describe this is like a stepped-on Curmudgeon’s Better Half. All the right flavors are in there, but none of them really pop. It’s not watered down exactly, just a little dull.

I’m not sure if aging would really benefit this one or not. I can say that it’s solid enough an offering that I’ll be on the lookout for any other barleywine from this brewery. :beers:

I think both of you guys posted on the wrong thread by accident . And I doubt that either of those is a new beer for each of you :stuck_out_tongue:.

Sounds like an infection, and that's totally not the beer I had around Thanksgiving. I have a couple of bottles left, but it's too late for me to check it out tonight. I'll report back when I do, though.

I want apologize to everyone here on NBS. Ive been working 12 hour shifts at the new Brewpub. I read the story about the good friend Dick from @lordofthewiens. Since we closed early due to the ice storm I wanted to contribute and had a new beer but got kind of hammered on CD and posted to the wrong thread. I just want to send my best wishes to Dick. Peace.

    As per label:
    12.7 oz.
    12% abv.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 1/4 inch light tan head over a mahogany/brown body with no lacing. Nose of caramel, dried dark fruit (raisins, dried cherries, dried cranberries), a bit of vanilla, dark malt, and of course booze and oak from the bourbon barrels. Taste mirrors nose and hides the abv rather well (for now!) Nice feel and overall, a great BBA Quad from these guys. Cheers!!!

    Last call for me, NBS...

Evil Twin's Grand Cru, a 12.5% abv maple bourbon barrel stout and barleywine blend...
Cola-colored pour looks essentially black in the glass with some translucent brown edging... Center pour didn't produce much head and within moments I had a clean glassy black surface... Got quadrupel-like aromas on the nose - lots of fig, raisin, prune, and plum - maybe a whiff of cocoa or maple or vanilla... On the sip the flavors all seemed more peer, the dark fruits were edged with maple and vanilla, with a molasses element in the background and some suggestions of chocolate and coffee... Body was medium-weight but full-feeling - not dense, but a little sticky, with no palpable carbonation... I'm not particularly impressed - reminds me of Firestone's Anniversary Ales - probably a hit or miss kinda thing when you blend beers together... I'm not excited by it, but it's good...

Hope ya got yerself a day off tomorrow, cheers...

Back again. Alvarado Street - Coconut Boogie.
Apart from a kick-ass label, I am stoked.
An 8.5% imperial brown ale brewed with toasted coconut.
    Canned 12/20/18.
L: Pours cola brown in color, but settles near black. Despite taking it slow on the pour, a khaki-colored 2 fingers width cap formed at record pace but didn't stick around long. Heaps of residual lacing coats the glass.
S: Chocolate malts are the dominant aroma. Coconut is present but not overwhelming.
T: Holy moly this is a coconut bomb. It tastes more like coconut than coconut itself. It's natural, raw and the non-artificial coconut that we all love. Fantastic. I also get flavors of chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, brown sugar and some spice that reminds me of cinnamon and nutmeg. Overall great flavor. As I sit here and drink it, the residual aftertaste of coconut is almost unbelievable.
F: Light to medium in body but a little thicker in weight. Carbonation is moderate for the style. Provides a syrupy coating to the palate. No alcohol detection.
O: This is great. As I drink it, the coconut is so prominent that I'm not sure that I have had anything with quite this much coconut. It's great, and I am always down to drink a brown ale, imperial or not. Alvarado put in some good work!

Enjoying this one from @MacMalt, thank you Rob for this one!

Pours a hazy yellow orange with a finger of white head that settled into a slighht ring around the edge, spotty lacing.
Smells of lemon, grapefruit, ripe melon, peach.
Taste follows, lemon, melon, some pithy grapefruit, pineaple, some herbal notes. Lingering resinous finish.
Medium to full body with good carbonation. Smooth feel with slight alcohol presence.
    Overall an excellent triple IPA.

Glad I was able to satisfy a want from your list. Also glad that beer is getting easier to come by locally. I was able to lay in a couple for myself and am going to sit on one for a year or two and see how it holds up.

Was quite looking forward to this when I heard it was being released.
    Look-medium copper color
Smell-a light resinous smell to it
Taste-has a good hop bite to it, little malt detected
Feel-aside from the hop bite a bit on the lighter side.
Overall- certainly a decent beer. Given my choice I'd have a Dirt Wolf 1st.

My rating was 4.04 or -1.5%

My new beer this week is one I have been sitting on for a while. I have far too much beer on hand, and my unofficial resolution this year is to put a real dent in that. I have already had a couple beers in the last week that were past their prime. I buy too much for myself, too much to send to my trade partners, too much to hold for new trade partners... I’m hoping I can change my behaviour this year.

Tonight’s beer is from a local brewery called Blood Brothers. My first experience with them was back in 2015 a few days after they opened. I spoke with one of the ‘brothers’ on that visit who was generous with his time, spoke to the vision he had for the brewery, and gave me some bottles of experiments they were doing as they tweaked their lineup - all quite good too. A good first impression.

Fast forward 3+ years and they are in a new larger space and make a bunch of good beers in a broad range of styles. Tonight’s is a barrel aged Brett IPA called God’s Flesh.

After cracking the unecessary waxed crown, the beer poured... pretty much only head. It took about 10 minutes to get the bottle into the glass. Once settled, it is an attractive opaque, light copper.

Brett dominates the nose. Earthy, funky with some citrus notes lingering in the background.

The flavour follows the nose with a good deal of pleasant bitterness. The citrus punches through on the finish too. Brett funk from sip to swallow.

Overall, this was enjoyable. I think the Brett probably plays a bigger role now than it would have 8 months ago when new, although the few reviews I have since read seem to mirror mine generally. Brett pale ales are a style I usually quite like when done well. This was a solid example of the style. A good beer, from a good local brewery.

    Cheers Dick!:beers:

Happy Picking Up Where I Left Off During The Last New Beer Sundays (Week 726), MK III!

All of my Taxman's are in the books with a tear spilled for 401 (Cake), which did not survive the trip. That being the case, I am jumping into the W.A.B.A.C. machine with Mr. Peabody & his boy, Sherman! We're going back to NBS (Week 724) or thereabouts. I had exhausted my SingleCut stash that day, but a reload means a revisit, beginning with:

Having an AB Noir now trying to let it warm a bit so may as well catch up on one I received from @thisischuck01

Thankful to have been able to enjoy some OH brews lately thanks to @CanConPhilly and @akatz821 lately.
This pours a hazy yellow orange with a thin white head.
Smells of grapefruit and orange with a bit of resinous pine.
Taste follows with pithy grapefruit and orange, a bit dank.
Medium body with good carb levels, smooth, no alcohol present.
Overall another tasty OH brew, full flavor from a somewhat sessionable offering.

Wow, thanks for sharing. I've had too many people in my life touched by cancer, and many have fallen. Some the first time. Some the 3rd or 4th. But, although many advances have been made, it is still a dreaded word to hear uttered. I wish quality time for your dear friend.

I don't always have a new beer on Sundays, but I don't really feel I would be doing the thread justice if I posted from another night. This one's happening right here, right now. Good stuff. Cross post from WBAYDN.

Good evening, BA'ers. Trying Big Sky's Bobo Robust Porter for the first time.

Very good stuff. A bit of coffee, smoke, and ash on the nose. Black pepper spiciness opens this flavor profile up, with mild fudge and chocolate, espresso, a little bit of YooHoo, oatmeal, leafy hop bite, and burnt brownie. A good amount of smoke and pepper continue on in a pleasant fashion. The feel is near ideal for a robust porter. Creamy and thick but not too thick, and a well-lit carbonation. Overall a 4.05 out of 5, although that may be short changing it a bit.

And it goes exceptionally well with this cheese, post-review :

Really really coming off like a smoked beer when this cheese comes into play. Interesting flip-flop!
    Cheers!
