Gotta ask before I submit one.

Assuming that the beer isn't otherwise packaged, I'm on the side that it's better than nothing.

I've uploaded pictures of crowlers of beers that are not otherwise distributed in cans or bottles as long as the name of the beer is legibly written on the brewery label.

I have uploaded pictures of crowlers and growlers that get posted. Like @Todd stated, it's better than nothing.

Still, I don't really like loading up pictures of the same crowler design for different beers from the same brewery, but what can you do it there are no other can or bottle alternatives?

I'd be interested in a neutrally shot photo of the beer poured on-draught at the brewery with the glass' logo towards camera, personally, if there are really no other alternatives.

I usually go for tap handles but that's not always an option.

I can see uploading a growler picture if it's labelled, but uploading a a picture of a plain old growler - even one with the brewery name - as the picture for a beer is no better than uploading a picture of the beer in a brewery glass - which is specifically disallowed.

That's why I've gravitated towards showing the writing on the growler more so than just the brewery logo. At least one can see the pertinent information such as name, ABV, and such.

The only down side to doing this is that if the beer becomes available in a can or bottle, it's more of a pain to upload an updated photo (though not impossible, with the Suggest Edit function). Recently has happened with Crank from Cycle Brewing - they just released it in cans, and there's an existing crowler picture.

Not to argue the underlying point. Just a thought.

Not to get completely off topic (and @Todd , feel free to move this to a separate thread if it's better) - but there's weirdness when you search for that beer. If you search "Crank", it's the first option listed. When I search "Cycle Crank" or "Crank Cycle Brewing", it doesn't even come up in the results at all.

A glass picture is disallowed because it doesn't help folks recognize the beer.

I do understand this sentiment but it still shows attributes of the beer the community may find useful in the absence of a production product package. I'd personally find it more useful than a labeled generic growler.

I often see the growler pictures featuring the "tag" that includes the information about the beer front and center in it if I approve it.

Yeah, that's what I do. Especially for some of the local breweries who rarely (or not at all) bottle/can their beers so I figure a crowler pic is better than nothing at all. Obviously if a beer is bottled or canned at some point then I'll use that picture, but otherwise I'll just keep taking pictures of crowlers until then.
