Man why all the 'tose hate? DDH Double Mosaic Daydream is like top 5 all time OH beers imo.

I flat out don't like it. And, yes, I can easily tell it's in there. All this talk about kids drinking beer makes me realize that a kid shouldn't instinctively enjoy the taste of beer. I sure as hell didn't. But I bet most kids like lactose beer. It's too smooth, sugary and sweet with almost no hop presence.

Mine too but I think my palette is fatigued. That milk sugar taste is way more noticeable than when I first tried the ‘tose. Now it’s becoming all I can taste. I just don’t see the need for them to even add lactose. The beers are great on their own.

What we need to do is get that BA OH meet up sorted and then do a blind ‘toste test to settle this once and for all

Personally I think DDH DMD is "creamy" enough without the lactose. One of my favorite OH beers.

Yes DMD is amazing with or without the DDH and especially without the lactose treatment.

I really do miss the old OH now.

But I guess we’re back to where we once were since there was only a 2 non Tose beers being realeased every other week anyway.

A midweek hop showers could save us tho.

Lactose is not a good flavor. Every time I had to can a beer with lactose, I would taste it and say "This would taste so much better without lactose."

I get there are other factors involved in batch to batch variance, but this most recent DDH Double Citra Daydream is tastier than the most recent batch of DDH ACE.

Agreed. I’d say 95% of the beers that I’ve tried from OH (using @dhaakon statistical analysis) that have had lactose in them would have been much better without the ‘tose. I get this after taste from ‘tosed beers that is unenjoyable.

Hey, sorry to be this guy, but I very rarely venture out of New England and never been to Other Half. I am making a quick trip to NYC tomorrow with the family for two days and am hoping to pick up any cans I can get. I have an idea of what's available as of now, but am primarily concerned with what to expect for a crowd. Given the day of the week, availability, and time of year, would I have a chance for cans tomorrow around 1:00 or so without investing more than an hour? Any thoughts you can share would be appreciated.

If you get there at 1pm on a Tuesday you should have an approximate 1 min wait for cans. Tap room should be tame no problem.

I know this is going to stir up turmoil, but I gotta ask: why is it that OH gets bashed for using milk sugar/lactose and HVB doesn't?

Because we can imagine Other Half's beer without it I guess?

Because OH beers pre-tose were damn near perfect. There was no need to introduce the tose other than to please fanboys.

As for HVB, other than their Pilsner, I’ve never seen one of their beers without tose. Additionally, tose doesnt show up much in soured beers IMO. OH takes perfectly good beers and mutes the flavor by making it as thick as a milkshake.

That’s perfect. I was gonna post a long rant and you pretty much nailed it. There’s no reason for all this tose. Their IPA game was fine. I would rather see them expand into different styles again then appeal to people that like these sweet beers. Once in a while is fine but 4/5 beers.... come on!

@RobNewton @BoardwalkBock interesting perspective. Makes me wonder if there would be the same concerns had lactose always been the norm.

I think the lactose is better for a number of them though, see previous comments about Citra beers! I find with lactose the beer is smooth sooner.

Between oats, lactose, and creeping abv, we'll be chewing beer in 3 years .
