    Hi again, all!
I'm back with a second beer. This one is localish and even slightly thematic season-wise. This is a dry Irish stout from the fine folks at Beau's. Their beers don't usually knock my socks off in terms of over-the-top-ness, but they are consistently solidly brewed beers and they do a great job of brewing a range of styles (usually well) that are ignored by most other craft breweries. Here's hoping that this one continues that trend.
It pours a very inviting clear ruby-black with a healthy cap of tan fluff that sticks around and leaves lovely lace in its wake. The aroma and flavor are all dry roasted barley. Toasty, roasty, verging on bready and chocolate without quite getting there. It is dry, drinkable and, indeed, practically drinks itself.
As usual, a nicely crafted, straightforward beer from Beau's that is just what it should be and not much more.

    Here is my official review.

    Santé!

Greetings, fellow NBSers, and thanks to @lordofthewiens for getting us going today.

Partly sunny and 25° outside. With the wind chill it's 16°. That's crazy for March around here. Last night there was a winter weather advisory that by midnight wind chills as low as -10 to -20 were possible throughout eastern Washington, but that doesn't seem to have happened, here, apparently, it getting down to a comparatively balmy 7, with a wind chill of merely -3...

Inspired by this impending news of frostbite weather so close to spring, I started early on my NBS drinking, hitting a big imperial stout last night from Baerlic, a brewery in Portland, OR, that was new to me:

Reminds me of a slightly cruder version of Old Rasputin. I'd love to try it on nitro!

I'll be back with something authentically consumed on this Sunday soon.

Wasn't really planning on any beers today. Had more than enough yesterday. But I had planned to cook a beautiful piece of beef today and it would just be such a shame to not have a great beer with it.
Red Cap by Amager Bryghus, a wee heavy aged on Auchentoshan whisky barrels. Usually barrel aged beers or heavy stout so it was kind of interesting to try it in a different beer style. It gave the whisky flavours a lot more space to really shine through. Really enjoyed this beer, I'm definitely gonna pick up some more of these. And of course I can't let you miss out and the gorgeous meat I enjoyed it with. 650 grams (that's something like 23 ounces) of aged beef. It was delicious!

    Synopsis:
The most authentic coconut I’ve ever tasted in a beer. If you are anti-coconut (@thebeers ) , this would be a devil beer for you. Personally I enjoy coconut, and this is awesome. Barrels are mildly present, but it’s low on booze, and just tastes like a mounds bar dunked in good rum. Tasty as fuck. Thanks again Brian!

My first time having Schneider Weisse Hefeweizen.

Lots of pink bubblegum, banana bread, and hay on the nose.

The taste follows the nose, but seems a bit bland. This also seems really dark for a Hefeweizen; it's almost a Dunkelweizen, imo. It gets better as it warms. It has a nice creamy mouthfeel and banana bready flavor. It's a decent beer, but I have not yet had a Hefeweizen that came close to being as good as Weihenstephaner's.

Oude Lambiek, a traditional, unblended Lambic by Belgian brewery De Cam (5.0%).

Pours a clear, light amber coloration with no head but some tiny carbonation bubbles clinging to the inside of the glass on first pour. Smell is tart and funky, with some sour grape, green apple and white vinegar notes as well as just a hint of blue cheese and oaky tannins.

Taste follows the nose, being quite tart and funky, with notes of sour grapes, green apple, white vinegar and a strong and lightly tannic woody oak presence that has a certain earthy, musty quality to it, as well as ligher notes of blue cheese and hay. Finishes quite dry, with a medium/strong tartness and some funky, woody notes lingering in the aftertaste. Flat mouthfeel with a medium body and almost no carbonation.

This being my first unblended Lambic, I thought it was quite interesting compared to the Geuzes I've had so far. The citric acidity that is so prevalent in many Geuzes is much more subdued here and it features a much stronger vinegary and tannic character instead, as well as a very strong oak presence and a sort of more earthy and musty sourness/funk.

The almost completely flat mouthfeel, despite some tiny carbonation bubbles actually being visible clinging to the inside of the glass, is probably the hardest to get used to. While this is quite an enjoyable brew due to its unique character, I don't think I will be seeking out many traditional Lambics over Geuze in the future.

Quickly moving on to New Beer #4, and this one is Ommegang's latest: Bourbon Barrel Vanilla Smoked Porter.

This really does deliver on the promise on the label, with the unstated extra layer of Ommegang's house yeast. Everything is in moderation, but it's really quite excellent overall, and I'm definitely glad I grabbed a four pack of this one. Tones of vanilla, chocolate, brown sugar, bourbon, and meaty, woody smoke round out the profile.

I have a feeling that if you do decide to participate, this beer has a good chance of finding its way to Jersey. Even if you decide against it, this woman has a mind of her own.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Sippers and commentators. The snow is falling in North Jersey and I know I'll be shoveling in a while so I might as well spend some pleasant time with my NBS compadres. Today's review is a Wheatwine from Kane, Tomorrow is Already Here (a good name for a Bond film). It was aged in rye barrels for 2 1/2 years and then fermented on Vermont Maple Syrup. I bought it on its release day at the end of December and look at the bottle almost every Sunday. It's a big ale (13.8%) with intense maple syrup. But there's a lot more going on here with raisin, fig, caramel, brown sugar, and ever-present rye barrel notes. Kane is so good at brewing specialty beers like this and I want to savor it so I'll pour the rest of the bottle into a growler and have it after shoveling snow. Here's my full review:

    4.45/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Poured from bottle into a Kane snulip glass. It pours a dark brown resembling tea with a thin, ecru-colored cap that dissipated quickly leaving minimal lacing. There's lots of maple syrup on the nose, along with caramel, brown sugar, rye, and raisin. It's very fragrant. The maple fairly explodes on the palate, sweet and syrupy. While it's very sweet I wouldn't describe it as cloying because of the negative connotation of the word. But thereafter it becomes more complex with notes of raisin or fig, oak, brown sugar, cinnamon, and brown bread. The rye is apparent but not overpowering. And there's an interesting spice at the finish that I cannot really describe. This ale is viscous and chewy with a low level of carbonation, and you cannot miss the 13.8% ABV which is more than simply warming. Overall, Tomorrow is Already Here (could be a good title for a James Bond film) is a very fine sipper - either as dessert or around a fireplace. It's the type of beer that Kane excels in brewing. It's big in every sense of the word - but thoroughly enjoyable.

The BA ratings are remarkably consistent.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) today! As always, the reviews are informative and fun to read. Cheers!

Kuhnhenn Dripa, this is a beer a colleague had at his wedding, and many were hit hard. When I saw it canned at the local grocery, I thought Hell Yea. A 9.5% DIPA pours a bit cloudy, huge bubbles and sustaining head, very dank, a bit of lemon, orange, bitterness, not much aroma, but other than that, a good beer here that will be in my targets box!

The description on the brewery web page says 100% oak-smoked wheat malt I believe. It is unique and easily the lightest smoked beer I have had both in colour and taste.

But who’s counting? Today’s new brew is outstanding. While it could be a touch tamer with the alcohol, for being 15% I’ve definitely had lower abvs that come across worse.

    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

It is a mahogany tinted very dark chestnut brown color. A moderate light tan head doesn’t have much retention and quich dissipates into a fine ring around the glass. A little light gets through looking down into it, but it is very opaque.

It smells like bourbon soaked wood, toffee, and caramelized sugars with a splash of coffee. Rich and malty with some noticeable alcohol.

You get an incredible coffee flavor up front. It’s followed by sweet molasses, bourbon with a bit of alcohol bite, sweet raisin/dates, toffee, dark bread crust like malts, and finishes with red apple skin and dark fruit rounded off by more coffee and char.

The body is a bit thinner to me than the regular barleywine.

I think this is outstanding. The coffee flavor is really nicely integrated. It compliments what is a great English Barleywine without detracting from it. It is close to being one of the best versions they’ve made for me, but a surprisingly noticeable amount of alcohol in the nose and flavor keeps it from being better. It was consistent across the temperature range too. I would be at 4.5 and 4.75 with smell and taste easily if it were masked better like they usually are.

All 3 were good brews, but my favorite was the Buxton/Stillwater Imperial Stout. At 2 years old, it's aged pretty well! I'm still deciding whether or not to have another new brew or just another old favorite. I'll be back here later and tomorrow morning to check out everyone else's new beers. Happy NBS everyone!

Sounds like the change in the hop bill really improved it and I wish I had tried it. I hope there's some left on Thursday. This weekend I've been limiting myself to Chingas, TE's Black IPA. I can't get enough of it!
