More premium content. This was delicious for what it was. Nice fluffy head retention/spotty soapy lacing. Crystal clarity. Aromas and flavors of big juicy/lightly tart/tangy strawberries, fruit skin/seeds, lemonade, and citrus peel/zest; with some cracker, corn, white bready malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hops. Light herbal, floral, grassy, zesty bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation, light body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced grainy malts, sticky hops, and fruit tang/acidity in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing bitter/tart dryness. Very flavorful/refreshing, not watery for 4.2%. Perfectly balanced blend of clean Natty Light lager and Strawberry lemonade flavors. Not artificial feeling. Tastes exactly how I expected, and will be scored accordingly unlike everyone else. Will be great for summer. 3.9

Still concocting that in my semi-psychotic mind. A twist on Jerk chicken, Jamiacan pies and pone..

A rich mahogany brown color, this substantial beer is crystal clear and sports a dense tan head. Wow.

The barrel is the opening band on the nose - if you’re of a certain age and a metal head (guilty as charged, your honor), dare I say the barrel is the Krokus of the nose of this beer - with rich bourbon aromas that are a cornucopia of vanilla and coconut scents, but the headliner (Motley Crue/Def Leppard - let’s stick to 1983) is the toffee, molasses, and stone fruit. Double wow.

The barrel is obviously an alpha dog on the taste, but the stone fruit, toffee, and molasses are the flavors that keep this pack together, keeping the boozy flavors in Czech.

Yes, I’m mixing metaphors, genres, and cultures. Sue me.

The mouthfeel is gripping and velvety all at the same time - there’s a bite, but it’s an iron fist in a velvet glove.

This is the best beer I’ve had in 2019.

Dull and hazy body; peach colored hue; thick, sticky and frothy head. Refreshing mild fresh cut orange scent. Excellent flavors of juicy citrus and light, bready malt base; low-key bitterness; orange peel. Heavy body; smooth, semi-velvety feel; slightly warm and relatively dry overall.

A very tasty beer, sporting a dry, citrus-like juiciness.

Another fine beer for a cold, wintry Sunday afternoon.

A late afternoon snow is starting to cover up the minor amount of sun melt from earlier in the day, and now watching some National Geographic channel offerings instead of TCM (just can't get into Hollywood narcissistic plot of "California Suite").

I love winter time, and today is just one of those primo days, deftly melding weather, home fires (literally), and gentle-on-the-mind entertainment (i.e, movies/TV, reading, and music).

    Big bad baptista
    ..solid black
..light carbonation with an at least average body with a slight creamy, oily , thick feel
...aroma is cinnamon, spice, roasted malt coffee and dark chocolate
..taste is cinnamon, espresso, black coffee, alcohol/bourbon. Very mild sweetness with the cinnamon and alcohol adding a little burn as well as making it seem almost dry.
..overall it was really nice and the bourbon is there but doesnt compete with the other flavors. This is one I would try again[IMG]

NE Session IPA. This was excellent. Great rocky head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, mandarin orange, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, red apple, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, cedar, green pepper, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, biscuit dough malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, nicely soft, very flavorful and not watery for 4.5%. Awesome Citra/Ekuanot profile. Very juicy, vibrant, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; with a nice balancing wheat/oat/malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Big fan all around, loved the hop profile as expected. Ekuanot is my favorite after Mosaic. 4

Moderate pour yields a one inch not quite pure white head over a fairly murky body with some sticky clumps of lacing. Nose of slight tropical fruit and a bit of earthy dankness. Taste mirrors nose somewhat with a dank and pine resinous finish at first couple sips, but as it warms that transform to a more juicy finish of tropical fruit and orange. Nice feel and overall, at 5.4% abv., a solid APA from THBC.
Cheers to Rob the Man for the hookup!

Next round: Equilibrium's Fractal IPA, this one specifically the Citra/Belma mix.

I really can't overstate how good this beer looks. The head production and retention are nothing shy of epic.

Everything after the appearance, though, is a bit of a let down, especially based on the previous two Equilibrium IPAs. Everything is fine: nice, bright herbal nose; clean presentation on the palate, with citrus and herbs; lively and easy mouthfeel. But nothing can quite live up to the appearance.

It's a solid brew, but nothing much more. Full review below:

One more new beer before dinner, and this one is a fantastic Mexican Chocolate Stout courtesy of the inimitable @JBowenGeorgia:

Really digging this one, especially on a cold stormy day.
Look: an opaque dark brown color with a thick tan head. Impressive staying power and lacing in the glass.
Aroma: milk chocolate with cinnamon and faint peppers.
Taste: the malt and chocolate notes were smooth and steady, providing a sturdy background for the cinnamon and peppers. I was impressed with the restraint using the cinnamon - it was there but not overdone, complementing the peppers nicely. The heat from the chili peppers was low-to-moderate throughout, allowing enjoyment of the chocolate and vanilla notes.
Feel: a big beer at nearly 11%, so full-bodied but certainly not overly sweet. low-to-moderate carbonation. Overall just about right.
Overall: a delicious beer with balanced and bold chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and chili flavors. Well done. Thanks, John!

Welp, this certainly is a mango coconut smoothie. The aroma and taste upfront reminded me immediately and particular of peach ring candies. But yeah, tons of mango and coconut; as well as notes of orange, peach, more mango, papaya, and passionfruit from the all Citra hops, and and lightly sweet sugar cookie-like malt backbone with hints of vanilla. Leans a bit sweet but shockingly not cloying; remarkably drinkable despite its sweetness. I must say, Decadent Ales really delivers when it comes to their portfolio of flavored/fruited/dessert/milkshake beers--stuff I don't normally go for anymore, but they do a damn good job at it.

It's worth noting that there isn't any coconut added to that brew - it's all the new hop varietal. Crazy!

    New Beer Sunday: American Lager

Evenin’ NBSers, with an alert for folks in SE PA who are fans of Stoudts Brewery.

This evening’s new beer is the first in an expected series of beers from Stoudts under the general name “Queen of Hops.” The first beer in the series is Hazy IPL. (Stoudts has been brewing some excellent lagers from their very beginning so it seems appropriate that they’d start a series of new beers with a lager.)

My review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/394/395188/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are clean, fresh and refreshing. There’s some tropical fruit such as mango and papaya. There’s also some citrus such as orange and lime. The light grainy sweetness and the citric and piney bitterness are both in the background and in a very nice balance with each other so that each shows but does not dominate the other or any of the fruit flavors. Eventually only the light bitterness remains in the long dry ending. Is this an enjoyable, drinkable beer? Well, let me put it this way, when my glass goes empty I’m ready for another….

The music on the player this evening is some more of the work of the Greek composer, Manos Hadjidakis.

The video that is linked to below shows a bit of another of the Greek Cyclades islands, Santorini. Basically Santorini is the remains of a very old volcano that blew up thousands of years ago (about 16 hundred BC). I once had a chance to spend a week on Santorini and I’d go back at the drop of a hat. Near our apartment, located near sea level on a small bay, there was a small fishing village and about 3 ocean front Tavernas that specialized in sea food. In one of those Tavernas a dinner of grilled calamari, fresh from the sea and brushed with olive oil while grilling, was so good that I’ve never really enjoyed fried Calamari since.

    Cheers, all!

Moderate pour yields a 3/4 inch white head over a hazy body with some lacing. Nose of sweet citrus (orange, tangerine, ruby red grapefruit.) Taste follows nose very closely with a gentle bitterness of mellow orange pith on the finish. Nice feel and overall, this is very, very good; and scarily sessionable in a way.

Another new local flagship. This was awesome. Great rocky head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, onion, mint, peppercorn, pine hops; with moderate cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 7.7%. Feels like Columbus, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe. Extremely vibrant, juicy, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; with a great balancing bready malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness from crisp resin dryness. Very impressive all around. 4.1

Alright new NBS, been following the last couple of weeks and looking forward to contributing on weekly basis and whish my 1st review was more positive but this one really missed the mark for me.

    3.13/5 rDev -22.3%
    look: 3.5 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3 | overall: 3

As lover of NEIPA and Saison, I had much higher hopes for this. The look is deep yellow to orange with a slight haze and head fades too quickly. The nose is seems over sweet with Mosaic over powering and malt, little to know yeast. Taste unfortunately follows the nose and over sweet with notes of stone fruit. Moutfeel is little sticky and not a good way, it just feel at over 7abv you can none of the Saison trade marks, and comes off as a west coast IPA trying to Haze bomb and not saison.

this brown ale could still alone by it selfs but when you add in it is 4.5 abv and so it is in class all by itself.
L: is deep brown but clear, the heads fades quickly and leaves little to know lacing
S: 1st is coffee then followed by some nice roasted notes
T: is chesnut and sweetness followed by coffee with some bitterness from the roast malts.
F: is little thin and one note but find this hard to rate as bigger brown ale I would ding it but at 4.5 abv im amazed at the body that is there.
Overall this is beer I was glad I got in a local box and whish I could have a 12 pack on hand to crush to start the night off

Delicious German pils as expected. Fantastic rocky head retention/spotty soapy lacing. Great clarity. Flavors of big lemon, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; and herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery hops. Similar/muted aromas. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and some resins in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, not aggressive, zero warming 5.7%. Perfectly clean lager flavors, no fruity/yeasty notes. Nothing but another gimmick Pils, but it's spot on for the style. Perfectly balanced clean pils malts, and earthy German noble hops. Will buy more. 3.91
