So that works out to one 5% beer a day.

There's a good chance I'm already older than the people who wrote the study.

I think I had this week covered yesterday. Tonight I'll start on next week, because I learned in school that working ahead is a good thing.

I'd bet that the number of people whose consumption habits will be affected by the content of this article is much less than the number of people who wrote it. I mean, really.

A new study that I did myself.

100% of the people who do not drink die too.

I love studies, just discussed with my brother how many times studies concluded eggs would kill us, or that eggs were a superfood that makes us healthy. I think that one has changed six times in my lifetime. This 100 grams alcohol thing will gain traction just long enough for some other seeker of truth (and headlines) to conclude the opposite from his/her own research

And how much money is wasted on these studies?, bet it could have bought lots of beer!

    1. That has way more to do with the statistical illiteracy of the people who report on those studies than it does the validity of the studies themselves.

    2. It's amazing how quickly the entire notion of objective data is invalid the second you tell people their favorite thing might be problematic in some regard.

In an effort to put my money where my mouth is, let's actually try READING this thing:

Someone said 100g was one 5% beer a day. Assuming that's correct, this all looks... pretty accurate to our common-sense understanding of how much alcohol is ok to consume, yeah?

    Hmm possibly/probably true.

But in my way of thinking it has more to do with an increased ability to correctly understand things in the future, and a highly inflated estimation of our ability to understand them in the present

I added a bit to my post, and looking at the actual results of the study, it does look to me like a classic case of "shocking headline, extremely non-surprising actual results". A person who averages 3-4 beers per night has a life expectancy 4-5 years shorter than someone who doesn't. Does anyone think that's a crazy estimate?

(Also, just regarding the eggs thing, I could be getting this totally wrong but my recollection is that the early wave of "eggs are bad for you!" studies basically just showed that they increase certain cholesterol levels. But no one wanted to run a headline that was "eggs raise certain cholesterol numbers and in another five years we will have data on what that actually means for your health".

There must be a temperance website somewhere that this is better suited for.

Every week it's something that is good for you is now not, and something that wasn't good for you now is. Everyone who drinks is an adult, make your own decisions.

Time for me with my na beers to post. Looks I could have lived three years shorter, but needed to quit to have a greater probability to make it to the pension. Don't know if it affects, giving it a shot anyways (no pun intended), 15 months on 0-0.5, do recommend, I need a na buddy here…:smiley:

The best thing with becoming sober was I could switch from being a whisky connoisseur to a beer connoisseur. Haven't regretted it a second :beers:

That's exactly why the study got published, so you could make your own decision. It's kind of like stop signs. People who don't run stop signs tend to have fewer accidents at intersections than those who regularly do. Up to you if you want to run a stop sign or not.

    Taken from Mayo Clinic:

    Defining moderate

Moderate alcohol use for healthy adults means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger.

    Examples of one drink include:

    • Beer: 12 fluid ounces (355 milliliters)
    • Wine: 5 fluid ounces (148 milliliters)
    • Distilled spirits (80 proof): 1.5 fluid ounces (44 milliliters)

Moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits, such as:

    • Reducing your risk of developing and dying from heart disease
    • Possibly reducing your risk of ischemic stroke (when the arteries to your brain become narrowed or blocked, causing severely reduced blood flow)
    • Possibly reducing your risk of diabetes

If you drink a light to moderate amount and you're healthy, you can probably continue as long as you drink responsibly. Be sure to check with your doctor about what's right for your health and safety.

    Cheers

Winston Churchill defied the odds front and center. My Grand Dad was a cowboy in Arizona and California in the early 1900s, became a lawyer without attending law school; and he gave me my first beer when I was about six. He told me stories like no one ever has; he loved Budweiser. J.B. was very cool and lived to be 86.
