I have a working weekend coming up in Columbus. Since weekends away from the family sucks, ,I would like my free time to involve much beer, preferably stuff I can't get in my home state (MN) or my predominant work state (MI). I have done searches on similar threads and checked Beerfly, but I hope some locals can weigh in on places to hit up. Good chance I will be alone, so a packed joint might not be my bag. What are the best bars/brewpubs to visit? If they are downtown, how crowded and navigable will downtown be? Which beers on the shelf now are worth muling home?

Also, Jackie O's in Athens and Weasel Boy in Zanesville caught my attention. They are within the realm of what I consider drivable, but are they worth the haul?

Opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks for helping me make the most of a crappy weekend!

I don't get to Columbus as much as i used to, so my info is outdated. I can say Jackie O's is definitely worth the hike; Weasel Boy is a maybe depending on the tap list. If it's one or the other, JO's is an easy choice.

Also, don't drive while buzzed coming back from Athens, the Highway Patrol is all over Rt 33.

Check out Columbus Brewing Company and get a Bodhi Double IPA. They have a restaurant in the brewery district that is decent and almost always has it on tap. Also, there is a World of Beers in the immediate area that is worth a stop. From there you could make your way to Bodega's in the Short North area. Note: watch Bodega's after 8pm, it gets pretty crowded. Another option is Bob's Bar to World of Beers at Easton. I would refrain from driving to Athens.

    Take home:
    Anything Fat Heads
    White Rajah
Hoppin Frog stouts, I'm not sure of their reach... they may be available in MN.
    CBC IPA

    Cheers,

If you're looking for some good German food and German beer then have dinner at Schmidt's Restaurant in German Village. They have a buffet loaded with different kinds of sausages that is out of this world. German Village is just south of the downtown area.

Downtown has 3-4 breweries that are fairly close to each other. I've only been to Columbus Brewing Company and Elevator Brewing, and I enjoyed them both. CBC has the better beers overall, but Elevator does a good job too.

Just wanted to quote and emphasize this. I heard more White Rajah was just bottled Monday, so it should be hitting stores soon. You can absolutely (and should) pick some Columbus IPA off the shelf just about anywhere. Head Hunter I haven't seen for a few weeks but you might get lucky.

Definitely go to Jackie O's if you get a chance, for staying in cbus, Bodega is the best option.

I'll +1 on the driving part if you go to Jackie O's. Lots of state patrols and once you get past Logan I always see lots of Sheriffs. If you go to Weasel, be sure to stop at Brews Cafe - they just had a Jackie O's stout on tap.

Bodega has a great tap selection but it can get crowded and there's plenty of hipsters to be found most of the time. Bob's Bar also great tap selection but gets very busy at night. Having said that I always have a good time whenever I'm at either of these places.

Downtown Columbus is not hard to navigate. You could do CBC, Elevator and Barleys all in one shot if you wanted to. Just be aware if its the weekend of the 24-25 its Michigan weekend so most all places will be busy Saturday.

Some none brewery places I like are Matt the Millers (more taps in the Grandview location) and I really enjoy the food. 101 Beer Kitchen is good on both taps and food - the taps change quick there and the few times I've been there there were 2-4 tap changes while I was there.

I have a trading partner who moved to MN recently and my last box to him was Hoppin Frog, Columbus Brewing, Troegs, Weyerbacher, Southern Tier bombers. Be sure to pick up a Rockmill beer or two if you are into Belgian stuff or even stop by if you go to Jackie O's.

    Have fun!

CBC is a must stop. While down town you can also stop at the North Market. It is a nice farmers market/ dinning market, which has good food and a pretty descent bottle shop. Whenever I am in Columbus I stop there.

Thanks to all for posting pointers. I went to CBC last night. Had a great time and a great experience. Tried the flight. The winter warmer was bad news, the stout and lighter beers were OK, the hoppy beers were outstanding. And Bodhi? Bodhi is world-class and out of this world at the same time. You guys are extremely lucky to have ready access to such an ass kicking hop assault.

Well, as of next week the tap list will include Anastasia, Snow Ermine, BB Anastasia, and Blackfooted Porter, so the tap list will definitely be worth trying :stuck_out_tongue:
