We could all link a billion studies that claim "a glass of wine a day can help you live longer". It's all junk science done specifically to get headlines. I'll drink to my heart's content and live with the consequences. Better to have a shorter, merry life than a long snoozefest!

Not quite. As someone else sort of pointed out above, the science is to try to find answers by unraveling a complex set of relationships. In most cases the junk comes in when the statistically challenged reporters interpret and turn it into oversimplified junk.

A glass of red wine a day may make you live longer. 2 or more glasses per day would likely have the opposite effect is what this study says. Nothing inherently junky about that.

so one is good, and two is just as bad as non

I think a lot has to do with side effects, a drink or two a day is good for the heart, memory, and many other items but when you have more you can create other issues that would counter the benefits.

An easy example is vitamins, you usually take one a day etc. Some could say then why are 2-3 a day not better then, why limit it to one. So that is sort of the generic example a lot take when it comes to drinks.

The main reason why the conclusions (and recommendations) sometimes bounce around is that all of these studies are inherently correlative, rather than causative. If we could develop a proper experiment where we manipulate the alcohol consumption (let's say from zero to 10 glasses a day) of a few thousand people and track them in a lab for a while, we would have a much stronger conclusion. However, we can't. Therefore, we are left to refine (methods, statistical approaches, sample size, inclusion of more co-variates, etc.) and then have the media do their thing. It's only wrong when someone replicates the study and finds a different answer.

I know that there was some work done studying cultures that drank a lot of wine with their meals and the results were very positive for improved health, etc. I think if they actually did a proper study and a long term one we could eliminate a lot of the in-between crap we see today.

I thought I was taking it easy last night, drank two 16-oz. cans of Blonde Ale. Checked the label, 7.5 ABV, high for the style (thought I smelled Alcohol).
50% higher ABV, if 5.0 ABV is average.
    2.67% more than a 12-oz. beer.

I don’t want to see the math for the average Saturday night.

If I drink 1 glass of day and get hit by a bus in a week, or I drink 2-3 a day and get hit by a bus in 6 days, isn't the effect the same? I might as well pick the fun one haha.

The study is interesting, IMO mainly because it studies almost 600,000 people. That gives it weight, does it not?

But ultimately the conclusion suggests little more than not drinking alcohol is healthier than drinking alcohol. We already knew that. The study can't say drinking less than 100g of alcohol a day means you're going to live forever.

Honestly, I think I'd take my daily beer or dram of whisky over living forever without the daily beer/dram. Early returns on this thread says the average BA would, too.

What is funny is people get upset over 2-3 drinks but have zero issue slamming back McDonald's or Starbucks. I will put money on it that 2-3 beers a day does less harm than a starbucks sugar drink and a McDonald's lunch.... LOL
    Cheers

There are folks who run 20 miles a day, eat nothing but good food, drink only water, then drop dead at 45. At the end of the day when our time is up its up, so have fun and enjoy life before it does, we cannot stop it. Not saying to go nuts but man, live life in moderation and worry less and most would live longer I bet just from less stress.

My money's on it too. Has anybody ever had a macchiato from Starbucks? I thought the lattes were full of sugar. Holy crap! I tried a macchiato one time and couldn't even choke it down, and I have a sweet tooth!!!

Anyway, a pint of bitter surely must be healthier than that.

A friend of mine recently told me she thought my drinking whisky over beer lately was a good health-related choice, but I wonder where she got that from? Doesn't the average 12 oz. can of beer have about the same calories as 1.5-2 oz. pour of whisky?

Hell, we're dying either way.:stuck_out_tongue: And count me as a believer in moderation + less stress = more life.

    Cheers!

Who knew consumption of alcohol could kill you? Wow. In other news, unrelated of course, alcohol can lead to questionable decision making, possible risk taking and occasional irrational thought. Crazy, right?

I use this egg example all the time. Admittedly, it doesn't disprove this article. However, I remember reading findings about the health benefits of drinking one glass of red wine a day, which is more than 100g a week.
