Probably because it has an actual hop profile.

No, Negra Modelo. A dark lager.

Will forever bother me it's "Modelo Negra" and not "Modelo Negro". Just looks odd on the label.

    Gotcha.

Given your list of beers in that post and the them of the thread, I thought maybe you meant Modelo Especial.

As you said, Negra Modelo is a dark lager (listed here as a Munich Dunkel). Although I believe it does use corn.

I wouldn't be surprised if adjuncts are used. The brewery's English-language web site lists "non-malted cereals" in its ingredients list.

Negra Modelo always seems to be readily available at a lot the Mexican restaurants Mrs. Goot and I like to visit, and a dark lager just seems to go well with my food choices. And also pairs well with a nice shot of tequila Añejo afterwards.

As an aside, I'm really surprised that there isn't a catch-all dark lager category; a Munich Dunkel is a very specific type of beer.

Negra Modelo is more properly classified as a Vienna lager, with the substyle being Mexican in origin and derived from brewer Santiago Graf's beers.

The European label lists the ingredients as: barley malt, rice, papain and antioxidant ascorbic acid, caramel color E150, stabilizer E405.

I'm with the Mexicans on this one, it's a Munich type dark lager (with adjuncts currently at least, a la an adjunct Bohemian lager). I think someone (outside of Mexico) must have gotten carried away with the story about the survival of the Vienna style in Mexico and overlooked the presence of a Bavarian lager style in the market, historically and presently.

I can never resist dipping into an AAL thread. Big fan. Always have been.

My personal favorite is Narragansett. 16oz cans are the popular choice (especially around here...sad there are no bottles and 12oz cans limited to 30 packs) but it's also fun to see the big 24oz can at convenience stores whenever I'm visiting home (MA).

Another favorite from back home is Night Shift Nite Lite. It's a little pricey for the style I guess ($6.99 a four pack of 16 oz cans....I think around $14 a 12 pack of 12 oz cans) but it's always fresh and delicious so it's quite a hit for me. Hope they start to spread out a bit more.

OP, since you're in the midwest I'd check out Schmidts or Stag. Regional lager brands are fun (even if many of them are probably going to be liquidated soon)

    Here is a write-up for Modelo Negra from that ‘other’ website;

“First brewed in Tacuba, Mexico in 1925, Modelo Negra, formerly Negra Modelo, is a medium-bodied lager with slow-roasted caramel malts brewed for a rich, smooth taste. Brewed longer to enhance its flavors, Modelo Negra redefines "Dark Beer" because it is exceptionally drinkable and remarkably smooth. This Munich Dunkel-style Lager is brewed with galena and super galena hops as well as caramel malt, black malt and two and six row malt barley. These ingredients are meticulously brewed together to give Modelo Negra that bright, rich, amber hue and that iconic, medium-bodied flavor.”

For some reason there is no mention of the use of adjuncts (i.e., rice) as being part of the grain bill.

    Cheers!

Did someone say Mexican Dark Lager?

This beer is one I have drank a fair amount of (and enjoyed a couple of times, too) but it’s always seemed to have straddled styles, and has never struck me as being closer to either a Vienna Lager or a Munich Dunkel.

To be fair, there are Craft lagers brewed in the U.S.A. which are also classified similarly, (either as a Munich Dunkel or as a Vienna Lager) but which have similar profiles to Negra Modelo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

When it comes to dark Mexican lagers, Negra Modeo gets all to love and attention (with good reason-- it's tasty!) but Victoria is my personal favorite of the "dark" Mexican lagers. I know it's not nearly dark or malty as Negra is but Victoria has that Vienna Lager feel going on nicely. I just prefer it when I can find it on the fresh side.

You can do no wrong with either, really.

I guess Negra Modelo is a Munich style lager the way Budweiser is a Bohemian style lager, i.e they are both far removed from the origins of their respective style, but we can still acknowledge the history behind the brands.

Jack - right there in the list of ingredients is what separates the Graf-style Vienna from the rest, as written about in the George Fix book on the style: the inclusion of a modest amount of black malt in the grist. Also, notice that there's no mention of Munich malt there.

Except that we would classify Budweiser as being an AAL in present day terminology.

Nite Lite is a damn fine beer, and worth an extra buck or so!

Yeah, except that the RateBeer write-up is inconsistent with the ingredients that Patrik (@Crusader) listed above of:

"The European label lists the ingredients as: barley malt, rice, papain and antioxidant ascorbic acid, caramel color E150, stabilizer E405."

It would seem that a Modelo Negra as brewed in 2019 obtains it's color (and 'malty' flavor?) from "caramel color E150".

Given Patrik's information I would suggest that the contemporary Modelo Negra is neither a Vienna Lager or a Munich Dunkel.

Spoiler Alert: In this upcoming New Beer Sunday I will be discussing a beer (e.g., beer style) which has elements of what we are discussing right now.

    Cheers!
