Some little known importer trivia for you:

    B. United was founded by Beverly United
Merchant du Vin was founded by Marv du Vin
Going against the trend, Shelton Brothers was named after the Texas country band:

Dirck the Norseman and Greenpoint Beer & Ale were coexisting at their start. Their location used both names - I guess the former name for the restaurant and the later for the brewery... as if identifying as a cohesive brewpub was too straightforward. They eventually dropped the entire Dirck the Norseman name since two names confused people and they wanted to focus more on their brewery identity. (I wondered if their move to putting out canned beer was a factor... as well as the fact that Dirck was misspelled by practically everyone.) I didn't realize that they closed and are in the process of moving.

They definitely did. The eggplant dishes were amazing and the sausages were various. This place was on a route through Yugoslavia along the coast going towards Split and Dubrovnik. The Adriatic coast was/is a huge vacation destination and Tito was rather enlightened about allowing all Europeans and Americans to spend their cash. We were hitchhiking and the cars were small and packed with people We ended up walking through the countryside and it was a beautiful region, and we were young and free. I almost talked a soldier out of his hat with a gorgeous red star. He wanted to give it to me but said it could get both of us killed. We were soon thereafter deported for consorting with the local ladies. We were flown into Athens where my best friend's uncle ran Olympic Airlines. I garnered lots of information all in all, and it was fun. Best journey of my life!

Those Shelton Brothers were OK (when fresh), tho' I'm more of a Delmore Brothers or Louvin Brothers fan.

But none of them could top The Steinie Bottle Boys (with The Duke if you were lucky!).

Will Shelton stepped away from the distribution business many years ago to concentrate on his music and brewing. I've lost touch with him these days, but he was a fine fellow indeed!

Dale, do you know the owner/manager of this store? Maybe he would be willing to sell you a 6-pack from an unopened case that is 'in the back'?

Just check the bottled on date before purchasing.

    Cheers!

He always used to be there, they opened up another store downtown, haven’t seen him in many months. But that’s a great idea I’ll check next time I’m there.

I've found mine were typically 40% beer, 40% skunk, and 20% polecat.

If it’s a farmhouse ale how can you tell if it’s skunked? Easy with a lager, I’d think a funky beer might hide other flaws.

In my experience, it's less of an issue, but it can still come in loud and clear at times.

I’m not a fan of most of the “earthy” styles of beers, but there’s a few I like. Kinda like cheese, some cheese is easy, some smell like rotten feet, so if the rotten feet cheese is bad how would we know? My acceptance of earthy beers in about limited to New Glarus beers, so I’m not really a well rounded BA. So my perspective is always skewed a bit on some styles.

    Sigh.

Some say that Saison DuPont is in green bottles because exposing the beer to light improves the flavor of this style specifically.

There's a good thread on this in which the brewer at a local brewery here, Mystic, purposely exposes one of their Saisons to light for this purpose.

Did you read Charlie Louvin's book "Satan is Real" ? His brother Ira was a real piece of work.

Hmm. Must be NG beers I've never tried. To me, earthiness comes from English hops like Fuggles, but I also get a sort of earthiness from Old Ales -- may be the same hop character hitting me, but it's stronger.

When I think "earthiness," I think of turned soil or clay nose you get from a garden or construction site.

Earthy might not be the best word I suppose. I’m thinking of their Thumbprint series, Apple, Cranbic, Ode Bruin , Rhubarb etc. Earthy might not right, a bit of light funk perhaps, in my world of beer these flavors don’t exist. I drink Pils, Ipas, and AALs almost exclusively. My lack of understanding of these kinda beers leads me to call those nuances earthy, light funk, over ripe fruit, a bit of booze and dank fruit.

bought couple of jeever six packs today at my local spot and boy i missed this. Tastes great, glad I never had these skunk issues. The only skunking i ever experienced was Heineken in mid 90s where it almost smelled like some skunk weed. Glad I found some more Jeevers!
