I never gave it much specific thought (and I'm not really a hefe guy), but I just kind of assumed Weihenstephaner made the best selling hefeweizen in Germany. Interesting to learn it's actually Paulaner.

I wonder if they'll can their Oktoberfests too?

I would love to be able to be able to get fresh German stuff locally...

I don't know if I'd say 'best', but I'd put it in the running. It's a touch more lean and phenolic than Weihenstephaner, yet still packs a heck of a banana punch.

Schneider Edel Weiss is no slouch, either.

Sorry, I was meaning to reference it being the "best SELLING" rather than the "best", as mentioned in the article:

"The Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is the #1 selling wheat beer in Germany, and a favorite around the world."

Thank you for the reviews though! Always good to have tips on hand for what to get when my hefe loving cousin is around

Gotcha(and thanks). I saw that in the article, but missed it in your post for whatever reason.

I will certainly look for these down here in Florida. It is simply amazing that back in the 1990s when I first became interested in the "craftbrew revolution", no self-respecting brewery would dare use cans. That was for the "unwashed" macro breweries. My how things have changed.

I know where to find it if I want it ... the problem is that I'm pretty sure its been sitting in those locations since 1634 ... or something like that. I got a hankering for it recently and asked my local binnys to order a fresh case, which they did, but even that was already about 12 months old. When these come in, we're pretty much guaranteed one summer of fresh cans.

Yep, it's been open for a few years now (opened fall of 2015). It's in the district of Langwied.

Agreed, but sadly it seems like they're putting much less emphasis on the Hacker Pschorr label here in the US. There's been no US social media presence for Hacker Pschorr since last fast and some of their draft-only offerings (Weisse Dark and Maibock for example) aren't available anymore here in the Twin Cities or western Wisconsin. To add insult to injury, their prices have gone up here too.

Canned imports aren't going to be fresher than bottled imports unless they get here quicker (and they date their product regardless). Perhaps the beer will hold up longer or perhaps not. I'm certainly far from convinced that a canned import will hold up better over time. If anything, since some of these breweries don't have canning facilities, the canned beer we get is sometimes likely older and subjected to more travel and handling. Canned St Bernardus beer has to be shipped to France for canning... then shipped back to St Bernardus... and then finally shipped to the US.

What I meant was it "should" at least be new product, because the cans are new for Paulaner.

But even some of the B. United stuff that's rolled through showed up months old by the time we received it.

I was going to reply to @thesherrybomber 's post by saying St. Bernardus would look weird in cans. But apparently they already do it?

I believe it. Having lived on the Austrian-German border and visited Bavaria often, I found Paulaner to be far more common than Weihenstephaner. Actually, I think I only really found Weih' in the United States...

Oh duh, that’s what he was referencing. I thought it was their Abt. 12 he was talking about. I’ve had the Witbier in cans.

And that’s what I meant when I said it would be weird, if the Abt. 12 was in cans.

I completely agree - it would just be weird to grab can of Abt. 12. But a can of the witbier out in the yard on a warm day? glorious.

At one point Weihenstephaner was the best selling hefeweizen in Germany, and at some point it was Franziskaner, so I guess it goes around.

I imagine they'll be in four packs, I think all imports that come in half liter cans are in four packs.

I think many US brewer's can their Belgian beers, Witbier or Quad.

I wonder if people would line up for 16 oz. four packs of Westvleteren 12?
