When Westvleteren XII was sold in the States 5 or 6 years ago (can’t remember exactly when) in those 6-pack packages with the chalice glass, I casually went to one of the stores in Manhattan that was allocated Westy about an hour after they opened (I was on my lunch break) and when I asked about it, the guy laughed and said he had a long enough line before opening the store that he sold out of them before he reached the end of the line.

I have a similar story. These beers were not available for sale in PA but I found out that Total Wine in Claymont, DE was selling them. I called the morning of the day they went on sale to check they still had them in stock (they did). I asked if they would hold one for me (the answer was no). I immediately drove down there and when I walked in the beer section of the store I was informed they already sold out.:grimacing:

    Cheers!

Michael, young people do not 'understand' this. Kudos to you for providing an education here.

Yeah, in the unlikely scenario where the Monks would actually sell their beer to the United States again, I would think it would be sacrilegious to can it. There would definitely be a high demand for it. No doubt. Would it sustain over a long period of time? I’m not sure.

I encountered a similar line, had nothing better to do, so I waited. I did not get any (luckily I've had it before...had to "commute" to Brussels though )

I'm not sure there'd be much hype around it now. All the newer beer geeks (big Treehouse fans) that I talk to have no idea what Westvleteren 12 is. Which when I first started hearing this it blew my mind, because this was THE Holy Grail for craft beer for so long.

Are you implying all of us who like Belgian Quads are old?

If you are referring to the beer itself the answer is a resounding yes. The Quad style is a great beer to cellar. I homebrewed a batch of Quad which I bottled 5/26/17 and I have my fingers crossed that I will have the fortitude to drink that last bottle after 5 years of cellaring (May 2022).

If instead you meant would folks be willing to purchase Westy XII in cans over a duration of time? Well, I would be willing to buy these beers if they were not outrageously priced (e.g., B. United & Shelton Brothers pricing).

    Cheers!

Back in the early to mid 2000's there were Paulaner Original and Weissbier 12oz cans available. My local store only sold them in large 12-pack trays that were shrinkwrapped...but they were dirt cheap. Less than a buck per can.

Oh, I agree with everything you wrote. The post of mine you quoted, I was more referring to the “beer culture” or the so-called kids on the streets who would one-off buy because it is Westy XII and then snobbily dismiss it afterward as a relic of the past much like (HURR-DURR) Pliny or Heady isn’t juicy enough(!!111!).

I sense the people who post in a thread like this wouldn’t feel this way. It’s safe to say I don’t and safe for me to assume you wouldn’t but the culture of beer for the majority is “what have you done for me lately?” That’s why I wonder why a beer, a Belgian Quad nonetheless, would maintain sustained hype over a long period of time amongst a very fickle market that usually isn’t interested in this type of beer. Sad.

Yep, this was exactly what I was getting at.

It’s like reading a review of a pilsner on this site. Not JUICY enough!! Too bitter, too bready! I love Veltins, I love Krombacher. I love Bitburger. Etc. You have to laugh when you read some of these reviews.

Weren’t they selling big cans (possibly a liter) of Paulaner Original pre-packaged with a mug years back or am I imagining that? I feel like I got one of my glasses that way.

Yes -- check Post #5 by BitterBill, but it was their Oktoberfest Wiesn beer -- and I even saw those twin packages last year.

I agree that there would be a limited customer base for imported Westy XII but that is likely a 'good thing' since there is such a limited production by this brewery. My 'vote' would be for them to send what they can, price it in a non-outrageous manner, and let folks like you and me enjoy it.

    A win-win.

    Cheers!

I find it interesting how a thread discussing German beer has largely shifted to discussing Belgian beer instead. I wonder what has given Belgian beer so much more cachet over German brewing?

I was making a point more about the fickle nature of our present beer culture and using Westy XII as an example as opposed to the German vs Belgian argument. I’ll take German 99% of time if that was case .

I got lucky I suppose with that release. I found a store that had some to sell, drove down on my lunch break and grabbed one with no line. They were being sold from behind the counter and never made the shelf but I had no problem grabbing one. I do think they sold out that afternoon however. It seemed really spendy at the time, these days, not so much. I still have a bottle or two.

    Kudos to you!

My 'battle plan' for that 6-pack was to try one bottle every year to see how this beer evolved over time. What are your thoughts here? When did this beer reach peak of flavor for you?

    Cheers!
