I'll check it out! Sounds interesting, I always thought mead needed at least 6 months to be good. Thanks for the heads up

Now that I think about it, you have a good point...all of those beers are great..I can't complain about them. So I take back what I said.
I guess my negativity towards Founders is rooted in the kbs/cbs hype. I've had both, and think they're pretty good beers, but not the best barrel aged beers I've tried. Out of all the events and tap takeovers I've been to in NYC..the Founders one's are the most crowded, they kicked a keg of the CBS in 13 min. at Blind Tiger. I suppose it makes sense because they're a brewery that many people know, regardless if you are beer geeks or not. I was really into the brewery when I first started drinking craft and I guess now I just don't get excited as most do about Founders. They deserve all the respect though and I'll always enjoy their offerings. Won't be trampling over anyone to get CBS or KBS though...

Speed Mead. Damn. Need to look this up. I really want to try making mead, in time for the next season of Game of Thrones so I can have a meat and mead party.

I don't think I've ever had high quality mead, so I'd be really interested to try something decent.

Syrup: pronounced "Sir-up", or "Sear-up"? Discuss!

/about as meaningful as this discussion

FWIW, the comment about about "nailing each and every style" is pretty darn applicable to the Founders products. They would be my "desert island" brewery, so I guess I'd go with them in this discussion.

This may be true for most offerings, but I believe the BA versions are on a different schedule.

Bells and Founders both represent this state very well. It is hard to choose between the two. Kuhnhenn is on a totally different level, so it's not a fair comparison.

I guess I am lucky in that Kuhnhenn and B. Nektar have gotten me into mead. Most of the Kuhnhenn meads that I have had are absolutely outstanding, and I have had a lot of good stuff from B. Nektar too. That Dark Dark Goose is fantastic.

Also, I'm with MordorMongo on Heart of Darkness: absolutely splendid. I wish I could drop 100 on a bottle of mead because it would be 100% worth it.

I can't believe this is even being asked / discussed. I went to Kuhnhenn earlier this year; I had heard all the hype so I made the drive, and I was thoroughly disappointed. Their beer is over priced, too sweet, and too full of artificial flavoring. Also their wines are literally made from a kit (seriously, you can order the kits out of a catalog).

Pretty sure they don't make anything with artificial flavoring...

Apparently you haven't had their Creme Brulee Java Stout...

I'd understand your argument if you were talking about southern tier's creme brulee, but Kuhn's version is if anything lacking on the flavor.

And while it is true that Kuhnhenns generally does charge a premium over other breweries, their operation is so small scale compared to others its almost akin to some guys garage homebrew.

They don't have a staple in super markets like two hearted or centennial, literally the vast majority of their income is their brewpub.

I have no problem paying a premium if the quality fits the bill, however I wouldn't make another visit to Kuhnhenn even of their prices were halved.

I have many times, including the Imperial version, and am pretty sure there's no artificial flavoring.

I personally enjoy both of them quite a lot. Lucky for me Kuhnhenn is 10-15 minutes from my house and Founders is available in bottles everywhere, so I don't have to make a choice.

PS. Creme Brulee Java stout is great, I didn't taste any artificial flavorings in mine.

Founders had Munich Man here at the pub a few times this summer. German Style Marzen Lager. Maybe it's an experiment for something down the road as it seems they brewed it more than once.

Ive had many beers from Kuhnhenns and not one I would consider sweet. Now BCBS is sweet, but not Kuhnhenns. I've never detected anything artificial either....

I've had the Creme Brulee and it was a slightly bitter coffee bomb. Very good. The only stout from Kuhnhenns I would consider sweet would be the limited Todds Big Black Bananna, I think that's what they called it, which was their Todds Michigan Mud with banana. It was sweet, but still not cloying at all and quite good.
