    Assuming Jever uses a best by date of one year from bottling, that would be almost a year old.

    Impressive since it sounds like it held up.

    US importer Raven claims it is 15 months (IIRC @JackHozempa ?) - altho' since this thread's several years old, I imagine it's also noted on an earlier page above.

    Without comparing it to fresh Jever (or, in the US I guess "not nearly as old Jever") can you really make that judgement?
    And, what of the unknown storage conditions at the wholesaler and retail level (Kept refrigerated? Kept in the closed case? Length of time exposed to light? What kind of light?).

    Yes, the best by duration is 15 months. The bottles now have both a packaged date and a best by date (which you can easily see is 15 months).

    Cheers!

    For Jever dates...
    "P" = Packaged or Bottled
    "E" = Expiration

    ...each followed by a DD.MM.YYYY date.
    Right... So, @FranklinsTower, your Jever was/is mere days away from expiration and bottled ~15 months ago. Not that it would go "bad" and hurt you, or change into something completely different, but a fresher Jever will likely taste a little different [presumably for the better].

    If you have any Jever left, I would hold on to one and look for a fresher batch of Jever to do a side-by-side comparison... for science! But I am not you. :slight_smile:

    Has anyone tried Jever in cans? I'm wondering the difference (if any) with taste and smell. Also wondering if they date the cans.

    Canada's imported Jever has been all in cans for years. Maybe one of our friends from the North will respond.

    Yeah I saw them - in Florida - and noted the dating (both "packaged" and "best by") in my post that revived this older thread. @zid and others have also seen them in NYC.

    They may taste 'better' since cans are impervious to light and air (oxygen). Continually storing the bottle in a closed container will eliminate the light issue but the bottles will permit air (oxygen) ingress over time. Oxygen is the enemy of beer - it promotes staling.

    Cheers!

    Haven't seen the cans in NYC. Only in upstate NY, Albany region. I may have to checkout Beermenus.

    Jever is one of the hoppier Pilsners in Germany. At the very least that hop flavor and aroma would be greatly diminished by this point.

    I don't know why, but I think that's an incredibly ugly can.

    It looks like beautifully non-lightstruck beer to me. :wink:

    BUT, perhaps your objection is partially due to it being simply the bottle label placed INTO a can design.

    As opposed to the Gaffel cans... Rather than placing the oval label on a blue can, they started more from scratch:

    I think it's the shade of green on the can. I actually dig the bottle.

    Regardless, I'd take the can any day. Ensures less oxygen and no light.

    Forgive my fluorescent lighting which brings out the worst colors but demonstrates protection from getting lightstruck. :wink: But then again:
