Yeah, those three letters of "I" and "P" and "A" sure do carry a lot of cachet with the craft beer consumer segment of the beer market. I suppose at some point in time this will change but with the expansion via sub-styles (e.g., 'NEIPA', Brut IPA,...) I suppose this will be a thriving portion of the craft beer segment for the near future.

    Cheers!

And I'm sure this was also indeed the case with MANY New England IPAs.

How can we say IPA isn't dominating the craft beer segment then if on-premise sales aren't captured in that data? Sure, the IRI data is good for trends, but if we're talking actual numbers today, that's a huge hole in the data.

In a thread earlier this year if I recall correctly, someone posted the largest producers of beer in the state of MA. Since Boston Beer Co. contract brews elsewhere, they were out.

After Harpoon, it was shocking to know that a brewery like Tree House was one of the larger producers in the state. And they sell ALL their beer on premise. They don't even distribute kegs. And they're not alone.

Trillium, outside of a few bars that carry their kegs, also sell all their beer on site. And the majority of the beer both of these breweries sell is, New England IPAs.

I'm sure there's countless examples of breweries like this in the US today, and I would also bet many of them sell multiple New England IPAs.

Had they not found the need to ship over to India, the recipe would have remained the same and continued to be known as a PA.

"By the early 1700s it was common knowledge among brewers that adding more hops to beer brewed for keeping or exportation would help preserve it."

I don't feel like clicking on it, but I wonder how different this thread is from the "Tired of the Hazy IPA craze?" thread.

That other thread has 62 replies right now while you just made this thread 108 replies (and me 109).

Does that mean this thread is a 'winner'!?!

    Cheers!

I don't know what it is about St Lucia IPA, but... I'm diggin' it (this, from a former IPA avoider)

Maybe we have too many IPA threads?

Maybe somebody will start an IPL thread (e.g., with a poll about whether folks are still drinking IPLs) to provide some 'balance'?

    Cheers!

I feel like the popularity of the 2019 Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest Collaboration thread without any real information about the beer until today, is a good thread to bring balance to The Force.

I'd like to see proof of documentation on that. I'm skeptical of the timeline you're providing. All of the articles I've read were based around Bow Brewery in England being the first to add additional hops and the dates supporting that claim for exportation of PA to India didn't happen until after 1800. In fact, they weren't referenced as India Pale Ale until Bow started producing these higher hopped beers and the need for exportation to India, which was 1840.

The quoted verbiage is from the book you own. Did you actually read that book?

Check out UK beer historian Martyn Cornell's blog entry FOUR IPA MYTHS THAT NEED TO BE STAMPED OUT - he's also got links to 3 other pages at the end of that entry.

It’s been around for a while and is most breweries staple style. (from what I’ve seen in the US) I honestly don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon.
