Both of these statements are true. 2007 and 2009 Darkness, which were two of my favorite vintages, were very, very hoppy. 2009 remains hoppy to this day.

On the other hand, 2008, much like 2016, was sugary sweet with barely a hint of hops. While the history of this site has been obliterated, there was a great deal of debate about "changing the recipe" in 2008, & why Surly would mess around with such a world-class beer. Now that I'm (very slightly) more educated, I'd wager that under attenuation was the cause of the 2008 Cane Sugar Darkness, rather than changing the recipe of a wildly popular beer.

In any case, if we're ever in the same non-public venue, I'll bring my last bottle of 2008 & you can judge for yourself.

I had 2018/2019 BA Darkness last night. The rye in the barrel was great.. sweetness subdued and notes of spice in the finish, out of the 5 BA Vintages of Regular Darkness this was my 2nd favorite behind '15.

So...any good beers in the bottle shops?

The Darkness topic is certainly scintillating. Perhaps a dedicated thread would be appropriate

Nothing other than that until next fall (other than maybe DSDB coming up)

Asking about BA Darkness might heat it up a little! (You're welcome, buddy.)

Scheduled for 4/19 at the Beer Hall. (We have some events this weekend for our seasonal Heat Slayer Kolsch release party -- Slay Day -- so we're holding off on the initial BA Darkness tapping.)

Drinking BA Darkness now, it's really good. The sugary sweetness isn't detectable. MUCH more barrel than last year.

Is Heat Slayer only available in sampler packs this year? Besides being on tap...

Agreed. This may be 2015 good, but it's been a while since I've had that.

Have you had it? It's damn near as good as the Assassin I had last weekend. I know a lot of people think Surly sucks now, but this is something special if you love intense barrel flavors.
