Dark Lord Day (2019)

If you can barrel age coffee and toasted coconut, I suppose you can barrel age orange zest too.

My understanding is that for "barrel aged" coffee, they don't actually put it in the barrel, at least not for the whole time. They take the barrel apart and put the staves in a bin of coffee beans and agitate it once in a while to make sure all of the beans get exposed to the whiskey goodness. I assume the same is true for all barrel aged solid/particulate stuff.

 

I've seen some pour green coffee beans right into a barrel.

Personally I think it's overkill...haven't had a lot that really shined, but did just recently have a Kane Port Omna with ba coffee beans and it kind of blew my mind so depends on the beer and how successful the bean aging process was I suppose.

 

Nah, gotta be careful with them. For the first five seconds they've got super speed, it's like dealing with alligators.

 

I guess I should say "some" barrel aged coffee then. I believe I read something from Dark Matter saying they do what I described with the staves to make Blood Lord, and some of their other BA coffees too. The only thing that seems universal is that they age the beans when they're green. Blood Lord is awesome, BTW.

I don't think putting BA coffee beans in a beer seems to make a difference vs. regular coffee beans from what I've seen, but I admittedly haven't had many. Crack the Skye is good though. That's made with BA coffee beans, right?

First DLD for me... I heard 3floyds has a day at the brewery where they sell tickets for some last-minute people, is this true? I have two friends interested that didn't get tickets and would like to snag some.

 

They usually do yes, but not always.

Typically it will either be announced at like 6am the day of, or the night before.

Last year it was the first Saturday in May they went on sale I believe. Just keep an eye on their Twitter account.

 

My memory may be failing me here, but I seem to recall IP sales at least once on the Saturday before Easter.
