12 ounce can 2/1/19. Split with Mrs. Strohme2 into a tulip and half pint glass.

Pours a beautiful rosy red, shirt lasting head but bubbles can be generated if I rock the glass.
Lemon lime lightly tart lactic acidity in the nose.
I’m a sour noob but this is nice and tart for me. Mrs. Strohme2 said it wasn’t tart enough but she enjoys that style. More lime, light wheat, cherry at the finish.
This is a very light beer, crisp and easy.
It’s be a nice beer on hot summer days.

    Synopsis:
I love how this smells and tastes. Pure, unadulterated citrus. This burns going down, but personally I love hop burn. Points off for the barely-there head and chalky body, but those are things I can overlook. Damn this is tasty! I need to find me more TG brews.

Sneaking in a beer before heading to my dads birthday in a little. Decided with some lower in alcohol from the awesome box @Blackop555, New Glarus Strawberry Rhubarb. I am a huge fan of their fruit sours and thought that I had tried this before but looking at my reviews I hadn’t so I was really excited to open this!

Happy Sunday NBS players. A warm and overcast grey spring day here on the island. Not doing much of anything today except watching mindless baseball all day.

I received two very nice boxes of new beers, from the great ba known as @Roguer , as part of the NBS BIF #Nein. So, needless to say I have plenty of new beers on hand and I plan to get to at least two today.

My first choice is River Street Praline Brown Ale, from Eagle Creek Brewing. The brew checks in at 6% abv, and no apparent canning date.

A burnt chestnut brown color on the pour with a lingering -off-white head. I mostly get malt and earth on the nose. A light start upfront, on the drinking, with nice earthy malts, a smooth flow, and a subtle bitter finish. A nice dry toasted/roasted tone settles in the more I consume and I get a very tasty nutty flavor as well. Additional notes of toasted bread, caramel, vanilla, nutmeg, brown sugar, and earthy hops. The mouth feel is light/moderate and very well balanced. Not too heavy but still crisp and clean without approaching watery.

Overall, I'm not big into brown ales but this was pretty good. I think the nutty flavor is what does it for me while not going over too heavy. Andrew, I think your score is spot on. I would probably fall in the 3.5/4 range as well but my high would be on the taste. The ba score really gets hurt by some idiot giving it a 1. Always enjoy trying beer from breweries I had never even heard of.

Rating super dank beers is very tough for me, as they're not in my wheelhouse - but I know so many other BAs love them, so it's a balance. I try to use "Taste" as my preference, and "Overall" to reflect the craftsmanship, when I'm in conflict based on personal preference. But I prefer my IPAs to not taste like a Phish concert, thanks. :grinning:

Barrier w/ Cambridge Brewing Company - Community Not Commodity

Barrier beer #2. This is a team up from two of my favorites on a style that’s near and dear to me. Barrier making one of my favorite barley wines of the past… and Cambridge not making any of my favorite barley wines but I still love that they have a strong dedication to the style… and no barrel aging in sight. How could I resist?

There must be something that inspired the name given the craft beer narrative. The can art depicts what appears to be bird creatures representing the two breweries attacking a money-grubbing Disney executive. Was there a cease and desist sent in the past?

This is a really beautiful beer. Reddish chestnut (looks more cola in the pic) with a slight haze and fantastic head. Hard to think of a more attractive barley wine.

Thin body for a barley wine (that’s not a bad thing for me though). Tastes of orange rind, a hint of pine, and caramel sauce. This isn’t too sweet though. There’s a nice dryness and the entire package makes this a very drinkable barley wine. This beer is a real delight. Fantastic.

Looking up the info, this beer is brewed with demerara sugar and orange peel. Wow, I’m surprised by just how on target I was, but those ingredients really come through in the ABV, body, and flavor.

This is listed as a British barely wine here, and I can see why… but for me this is more “American.” I couldn’t say where the flavors from orange peel end and that of hops begin in the beer, but does it really matter one way or the other?

    Good afternoon, NBS.

Sitting down with a new beer which is always exciting. What’s even more exciting this particular day is the prospect of finally watching Tiger with a shot at winning another major.

Here we have Kane Velvet Hand. This ESB (a first and hopefully not last for Kane) is brewed with Marris Otter as the base malt, with crystal and amber malts. Hopped with EKG and Fuggle, the beer comes in at 5.3%

@AyatollahGold already wrote a great review of this beer, but here goes nothing.

    Kane Velvet Hand

Look: The beer pours a translucent, murky, deep amber / apricot. Frothy, beige head with small and large bubbles all mixed together. After the initial pour it settles down to a finger, leaving some lacing in its wake, and then just a thin layer across the top. Streaks of lacing across the glass as I drink. No visible carbonation.

Smell: First aromatic is toast. Toasty and bready. Fresh hazelnut. Honey sweetness. All together the aroma reminds me of trail mix, or a cereal like Honey Bunches of Oats. Grainy, fruity and nutty. Apple and apricot sweetness. Earthy, vegetal and tea like hop aromas.

Taste: Very clean flavor profile. There’s a honey sweetness that carries throughout the beer. This flavor picks up as the beer warms. Fruity with notes of apple, dried apricot, white raisin. Fresh hazelnut again. Hints of vanilla.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with nice carbonation this pricks the palate. The beer finishes dry with an ever so slight apple skin/lemon pith bitterness.

Overall: This beer is excellent. Out of the fridge I’d let this sit out for 30 minutes before drinking it, as it gracefully opens up at about 50 degrees F. Kane really hit it pint of the park with their first ESB.

    Update: Tiger wins!

The Masters just wrapped up, and this was about as thrilling an outcome as I can remember in golf. Not nearly as emotional for me as, say, Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, but I'm very happy for the outcome - because of the story line, and how it just feels right, thoughts on the individual aside.

Next up: a SMaSH DIPA from Trillium: Number Eighty-Eight, a pilsner malt and galaxy hop DIPA clocking in at 8.2%.

Going with exclusively pilsner malt for a DIPA is a curious choice. Similarly, Galaxy hops aren't often showcased solo, with brewers favoring it as a dry hop.

Appearance is classic for Trillium, although head production and retention are lacking.

The nose and palate are classic Galaxy: bright herbs, tons of citrus, and accents of tropical fruit adding depth. The choice of Pilsner malt is even more curious on the palate, as there is only a hint of its pungent, earthy sweetness - the Galaxy hops are really overwhelming.

Really lovely mouthfeel: lively, smooth, neither hiding nor flaunting the ABV.

I'm glad you enjoyed, I thought not letting you know it was a saison might help you rethink the style a little. Just a heads up the Wilmington Brew Works crowler is a lot like Burley Oak J.R.E.A.M.s which I noticed you really like!

Hello, hope everyone has been having a nice day. Finished off some house work and now it’s time for a few brews.

First one is from NBS BIF 8, last full round. @r0rschach bombed me so hard I still have some beers remaining in my cellar.

From my of my favorite non-local breweries. Made a trip to Austin just about 2 years ago for my 40th Bday, and the trip location choice had a lot to do with Jester King.

Pours a bright and bubbly pink with a thin pink cap. Settles into thin collar. Mostly clear with a careful pour.

Aroma is bright and fresh strawberries. A mix of earthy ripe flesh and hint of unripened strawberry tartness.

Flavor is layers of strawberry juice and flesh. Hint of citrus in the tartness and light oaky earth.

Moderate carbonation and clean, fairly light body.

A great use of delicate strawberry flavor. Melds nicely with the base brew and barrel.

I’ll be back with a mystery beer from @thebeers and more from this round of the NBS BIF.

Diaphanous from Commonwealth brewing company. This is a saison hopped with hallertau blanc, ella, and comet hops and it's hitting the spot on this warm afternoon
    [IMG]
Pours a hazy golden orange color with about a finger and a half of soapy white head. The head fades quickly leaving some nice lacing along the glass. Smells grassy with melon and lemon a and hint of bubblegum. Tastes of tart lemon with a nice peppery, dry finish. Light body and finish
Overall a very enjoyable saison. 3.75/5

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @lordofthewiens for today's introduction. Got the NBS BIF beers to review from @Coronaeus. I made a huge haul yesterday of new beers, but those will have to wait for tomorrow. I couldn't fit them all in my fridge, which is a rare occurrence. A lot of rare an limited releases from friends.

Starting off with the mystery beer, only thing I know is that it is 7.4%. Bit of a gusher opener. This was excellent. Deep ruby red/purple color. Nice head retention/spotty soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big sour/tart/tangy raspberry, blackberry, cherry, cranberry, fruit skin/seeds, lemon, lime, plum, pear, apricot, red/green apple, currant, red grape/wine, toasted oak, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate caramel, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate malts; with lighter notes of vanilla, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and light oak spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready malts, lactic acid, fruit tang, and light oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness, mild increasing pucker factor through the glass, but not overwhelming. Mild increasing warmth of 7.4%. This has got to be a fruited Flanders brown ale or something.

Here is the reveal. I was pretty close, blackberries vs blueberries was where I was wrong. Vanilla was a bit bigger in the nose, but lingering in the taste. Awesome balance between juicy/jammy berries, Brett/Bacteria complexity, oak barrels and dark/bready malts against acidity. Gave me a touch of heartburn. :flushed: 4

Interesting, I sort of do the opposite: taste (and smell, look, feel) is based on my understanding and experience with style and what I think or know (via brewers’ notes) they are going for. Overall is how much I enjoyed the sum of all the beer's parts, personally.
