Hello all, A couple of buddies and I are doing a baseball trip this summer. We will be coming from Field of Dreams in Iowa (posted in Midwest thread) to Chicago on Thursday 7/18. We may stop at a Kane County Cougars(Geneva, IL) for the game or drive straight to Chicago. We have not decided yet. My Fraternity brother Augie lives in Chicago and we are staying with him. On Friday 7/19 we are driving from Chicago to Toledo, OH and golfing somewhere on the way (prob in Indiana). Mudhens game that night. Then on Sat 7/20 drive to Canton for NFL HOF then on to Pittsburgh for Phillies game then home to Philadelphia that night. What is good? Our route is I90 into Chicago>Toledo>Canton then I80 and I76 to Pit then PHL. Thank you.
For the Indiana portion of your journey, 3 Floyds, 18th St, and Bare Hands are close enough. I also enjoy Evil Czech beers, and they have a very nice small plate style buffet for lunch. We had beer and food at Crooked Ewe last time we were in South Bend and really enjoyed both there. I-90 is a bit of a wasteland as far as known breweries between South Bend/ Elkhart area and Toledo
In Toledo you have both Black Cloister(walking distance from 5/3) and Maumee Bay Brewing(very short drive) downtown by the ballpark.
Pro Tip: Park the car at Maumee Bay Brewing and walk the 10 minutes to 5/3rd field, save the $10 parking/traffic nightmare and that will buy you 2 glasses of beer at MBB. Food is good there too, but Homeslice Pizza is 1/2 block from the ballpark too.
If you do go to a KC Cougars game, you'll be within 10/15 minutes of both Penrose and Riverlands (new kid in town, doing very well). Both are close to 88, so at worst you could just do a quick stop, split a flight and get back on the road depending on time.
Geneva, IL. Penrose Brewing is great. 90 into Chicago. Mikerphone a must. You gotta golf at Cog Hill. Course 4, Dubsdread. Gotta. Down 294, or tri-state as dey say up dere. Tiger has course record at 62. FFF of course.
Just wanted to bump this since the trip is next week. Are there any breweries with togo cans or crowlers that I should not miss?
Sounds like you’ll miss 3 Floyds since you’re taking 90. I suggest Fat Head’s in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. They sell cans and crowlers and it’s not far off of 90.
More brewing in Villa Park would be mostly on the way from KC Cougars to downtown Chicago. They usually have some crowlers / to-go cans, but I'd check on social media or call them to be sure. Noon Whistle brewn If you don't go to KC Cougars, I'd say Mikerphone in Elk Grove or Une Année brewing in Niles would be more on the way than the two I mentioned above. Let me know what you decide on around Pittsburgh! I'm going to be there for a Pirates game as well the following week and haven't figured out my potential beer stop around there.
