My thoughts exactly -- ignoring the bourbon and evaluating only the stout, BCBS was by far the superior beer for me.

Without having had them side by side, and having had KBS many times but BCBS only once, I would say KBS falls a rung shy of BCBS. BCBS is just such a thick rich beer, I was amazed. KBS is very good but falls into a minor failing that I get from lots of BA stouts where they are just a bit thinner than the base beer.

I know this is a common opinion, which was one of the things I was looking for in the side by side. I found them to be nearly identical in that regard.

interesting. I wonder if it is the relative prominence of the coffee flavor that makes it seem thinner? As mentioned above, i believe, it would be interesting to see KBS up against BCBS coffee variant

Really interesting thought, to compare the two side by side. I would consider doing this with some family/friends to get their opinions also. I think this is something that I will have to venture and try! For what it's worth, I think BCBS has the edge compared to KBS, but I tend to think of BCBS as a treat regardless of how common it has become.

KBS and BCBS are both great beers, but what KBS does, it does better than anyone else IMHO. The coffee and chocolate combo in KBS is in perfect harmony, with just the right amount of barrel character, and an overlooked attribute is the consistency year after year. I always look forward to it. But I don't age KBS, I drink it fresh and keep a few for about 6-8 months, but not any longer than that as the coffee really fades and that is one component I like the best.

Regular BCBS is king of the barrel though, and the original is still the best. Straight up barrel with some amazing chocolate, vanilla, and caramel flavors, but no mistake, the bourbon is the star of the show and I love drinking it as much as KBS. It holds up incredibly well and still tastes great (maybe better) after a couple years in the cellar. Also, some vintages are better than others. The best I've had is the 2015 14.5 version, 2016 was OK, but then 2017 was a disappointment, then in 2018 it rebounded again as being great. Nonetheless, I like the differences year after year no matter how subtle.

In short, BCBS would edge out KBS, but not by very much.
