Boulder, CO April 25, 2019 — Avery Brewing Company, a pioneering and innovative craft brewery known for its all-encompassing obsession with beer, creates a modern, hop forward, full-flavored Hazy IPA, at only 100 calories and 3 carbs.

Founder and CEO Adam Avery admits, “This is an extremely selfish brewing endeavor. A beer brewed for me – an aging, wannabe-athlete who “drinks” for a living, and desperately needs to start setting a new and healthier pace in life.” Pacer IPA may not just be for him, though, as increasingly health-conscious drinkers look for lower calorie and lower carb options, driving the burgeoning “better-for-you” category in beer.

Brewing a legitimate, flavorful Hazy IPA clocking in at 100 calories, 3 carbs, and 4.5% ABV, that sports a mouthfeel and hop character worthy of today’s craft beer drinker, was no easy task. True to the company’s Beer First mentality, the brewers were ready for the challenge, focusing on ingredients that would ensure high returns on the full sensory experience. In addition to traditional malted barley, they incorporated wheat and oats for fuller body, as well as an abundance of southern hemisphere hops, and contemporary dry-hopping techniques to achieve big, juicy, fruity aromas and flavors.

Despite his self-deprecating manner, Avery is actually a long time and devout rock climber and cyclist, embodying the mountain lifestyle of the brewery’s homestate of Colorado. Going big on flavor has always been just as important to him. “After 26 years of exploring and creating beers, I realized I also wanted a real IPA with fewer consequences.” Avery added, “Pacer isn’t about making something I can have a lot of. It’s about making something I want to have a lot of. Especially without getting in the way of my extremely insignificant athletic goals, or the trauma of stepping onto the scale!”

    About Avery Brewing Company:

Standouts include White Rascal Belgian-Style White Ale, a remarkable selection of IPAs including Maharaja Imperial IPA, and Barrel-Aged 16ers like Vanilla Bean Stout. Southern hemisphere hops has me very interested.

If a beer isn't "clocking in at..." surely I'm not buying it. I guess I'll give this one a shot.

Honestly, whoever nails this will probably have a pretty successful beer. I keep these low abv/calorie beers around when I want something light to drink at night that has some flavor. There are sacrifices, but one that can pull off the body and mouthfeel and stay on the lower end will find a following.

Did you notice that the word "session" did not appear anywhere in the Avery press release?

    Cheers!

I agree with you here. Dogfish Head claims that through the magic of monk fruit their 'session' IPA of Slightly Mighty has body but I have yet to try this beer.

I took note that Avery states "they incorporated wheat and oats for fuller body" and I would suggest the critical word here is "fuller" as in the beer will have a "fuller" body than if the higher protein grains were not part of the grain bill.

    Cheers!

I am beginning to wonder if they feel using Session somehow makes the beer less in their eyes? Is Session a dirty word in brewing now?

If I owned a brewery I would focus less on the name side and more on the flavor side. Whoever can delivery a full bodied Session IPA will dominate. So far everything I have had is just not great, low flavor and watery. Even if they have to slightly up the ABV to get that flavor it would be better in my eyes. I get the point that its a lower ABV/Calorie beer but if it tastes bad it won't sell.

For me it is the "watery" aspect that I find objectionable.
I agree with you here. Please let me know when you find this 'unicorn' of beers.

    Cheers!

I think that Session beers and these beers may hold some things in common (low abv), but I think these Low Cal beers are a totally different animal. I think they are trying to capture that current wave of healthy (if that is a thing) alcoholic beverages as they see themselves getting attacked on all sides by hard seltzers and other low cal drinks. You can have a good session beer that has good body, and good taste, but odds are pretty good it isn't clocking in at 100 calories with all that residual sugar it is carrying around.

I swear New Belgium missed the boat on this market years ago. They released a seasonal ("Skinny Dip") that checked all of these boxes 13 years ago. They never marketed it as such and it never really gained much momentum. When they brought it back, it (again) wasn't marketed well and wasn't really the same beer either.

I wish Avery all the best with this one. Hopefully someone nabs this market as it seems ripe for the taking.

While I would like to think that a better body would be a better selling beer, I don’t know if that would happen.

All day is a crazy big seller and it does not gave a Great body or even taste. Halfway through one it’s already boring.

So far for me the best have been

    Slow ride
    Go to
    Original recipe day time

Sure I’m missing a few but those stand out.

Chilling some of the new DFH slightly mighty right now, will see how it compares.

    Enjoy

Body/ mouthfeel with low carbs and ABV? Seems like the ultimate beer. These 6.5% hazy ipas just aren't doing much for me. 8% is that money range.

I can't imagine a 4.5% beer with some body and mouthfeel, without some extra residual sugars.

I'm having a pilsner urquell now and apparently that one is Rich with carbs and on the lower ABV end. You either go all in, or it's some fad bullshit Imho.

Sugar free cookies and these buttery recipes with half the butter are shells of their former shelves. Make these products as intended please. There's a reason coca cola 10 calorie kind of fell off.

But people on diets will take some type of sacrifices. So it's understandable why these beers exist.

But yeah. I've had overly hopped 4-6% beers. There's gotta be some balance and it's usually in the fuller body. Hops alone can add quite a bit of that phenol ibu driven flavor. It will be magical when these breweries can get it all together without sacrifices.

Harpoon’s Rec League is a hazy little stunner at 3.8 and around $17 for a 15 pack

Completely opposite for me. Last night I had an All Day after not having one in a long time and I enjoyed it more with each sip, as it really opened up for me as it warmed. In fact I preferred it to the Torpedo I had just before by a longshot (but full disclosure I have never been a huge fan of Torpedo).

I am totally on board with this trend and will give Pacer and the others a try when I see them. I've had to cut back on my drinking of high ABV hoppy beers and something light and flavorful will be perfect.

I am fully onboard as well. Just not on board with all of them.
