I decided to take some time and rank the variants in order of what I'd prefer. There are quite a few caveats, though. First, I've never had Lounge to know for sure if I'd like it, but I'm kind of hedging my opinion of it on the list. Second, those Port & Sauternes Whiskey barrels...if it's the wine barrels then filled with whiskey and then filled with DL, I think that should be good. Third, those DVR barrels...not sure about them, but mixed with BBA/RBA DL, you'd think it would be good.

Lounge was awesome last year and sounds like they’ve improved on it with the double barrel-aging.

Since you said the backpack would be empty, put your soft sided cooler in your backpack when you go thru bag check. Use cold or frozen water bottles instead of ice packs so you have less things to worry about losing. You can take it out later to put the DL in the backpack, no one will care if you're walking around with "two bags" at that point since most people are lugging a backpack and a totally flimsy awesome tote bag.

I'd rank the variants in order of desirability:

    1. Handjee
    2. Chemtrail
    3. Lounge
    4. Cavaleiro
    5. BBADL
    6. RyeBADL
    7. 'Rrari Crochet (hopefully tawny and not ruby port; could be great, could be terrible)
    8. xBBA xDVR
    9. xRBA xDVR
    10. Reptilefund (hopefully it was like 11 months in bourbon and 1 month in mezcal)
    11. Brosure (ruby port, no thanks)
    12. FVM (Sauternes, no thanks)
    13. Loadstar (Sauternes, no thanks)

Not sure why people are ranking Cavaleiro low, it isn't in sherry barrels like last year. I'd be stoked to get one this year.

Wow, you guys can all come fight over my Handjee bottle if I get it again. Far too sweet for my liking and I will gladly be giving mine away to the first person who has any other variant.

I'm in the "hope they post the tap times" camp. Last year there were some long lines, but the sharing in line was a fun way to kill the time until you got your pour. I got to try 5 variants last year and didn't "camp" for any.

I hadn't really paid attention to the difference this year with the barrels and not really familiar with Calvados. If they had said "apple brandy barrel", I would've known right away. You're right, that one could (should?) be very good.

Yeah, calvados is to apple brandy as cognac is to brandy. Sign me up.

Oloroso Sherry is absolutely delicious, particularly compared to calvados aka apple brandy. I'm not sure this years Cavaleiro will be better than last.

last year, handjee was the variant with the highest bottle count. like i think almost half of total number of variant bottles.

Can confirm. In stacks close to the bar - not in the beer aisle. Telesto was down to about six cases. Fortunate Islands was the only other people made a dent in...

Apple Brandy Noir and Calvados Mexican Cake are proof you can make a great stout in apple brandy barrels. There's really not a good list of sherry barrel stouts out there. The sweetness is more forward than apple brandy, IMO, and that's bad for a brutal sweet stout

So it sounds like they don't really care how much bottled water you bring in? I was going to use frozen bottles to keep my beer cold (and drink throughout the day as they thaw).
