Some German brewed Gose was supposedly super sour back in the day.

I agree that everyone has different tastes and to each his one etc. However, noooooo beer should ever contain cucumber under any circumstances. This is blasphemy of the highest order and if you like it you are wrong. Other than that... umm... to each his/her own.

I love a good kriek or lambic (except for framboise, raspberries can FO) especially for a taste of summer during the winter, but these are brewed to showcase the fruit. Unlike most of today's fruit beers where it's "hey let's add (mango, passion fruit, grapefruit, blueberries, et al) to our mediocre IPA.

A local burger place has a pretty decent selection of beers listed by type. A couple of years ago I had a discussion with their bartender over a category called "Gluten Free Beers".
Call it what you want, but don't call it beer unless wheat, barley, or rye is in the recipe.

My grocery store now devotes about 1/3 of their limited cooler space to hard seltzer, soda, and tea. It's what sells these days.

I haven’t had those ones. The ones I have had have been much more drinkable, less salty and sour than their American version.

To my way of thinking, no style is truly unwelcome. I have my favorites, of course, but I also relish having choices. The flavors I favor vary by season, circumstance, ABV, mood, and, of course, over time.

Some of us remember, not so long ago, when the only beers available were a couple of nearly identical offerings from Anheuser-Busch, a couple from Philip-Morris (who owned Miller at the time), Coors (if you lived east of the Mississippi), your locally made lager (Rolling Rock), some Canadian and Euro Lager imports (Heineken was the top of that pile), maybe Fosters (still made in Australia), and Guinness or Bass around St. Patrick's day or if you were in an Irish Bar.

Frankly, if you tried to add a "Place" that was a bar or restaurant with such a limited selection to the Beer Advocate website, I wouldn't blame the Moderators for not doing so as it was not sufficiently "beer oriented," but that was the selection available to us then. Enjoy "the embarrassment of riches" that we have now. I certainly do. Innovation is good and market forces will take care of everything else.

I'm all for the basics, Pils, Helles, kölsch, pale ale, IPA, Stouts, etc.... I can honestly do without bubblegum ale, peanut butter stout, cannoli ale, etc. Call me old fashioned but I want my beer to taste like beer.

Adopting a scientific approach, the only style that I've had at least 5 of where at least one didn't get a rating of 3.75 or higher was Irish Red Ale. So I'll go with that.

When was that? Coors' distribution crossed the Mississippi by the 1980s (reaching the Mid-Atlantic states of NY, NJ and PA by '87, for example). Mid-decade the other BIG 6 national brewers, #3 Stroh, #4 Heileman and #6 Pabst together accounted for another 26.6% of the US beer market, plus another 26 regional and local brewers* combined for 5% of the market.
(* not counting the new "microbreweries").
