Actually it's when you don't remember all that you got :grin:

When it affects your finances, job, or family. Other than that do it up

Hoarding any sort of material possession gives life meaning and makes domestication tolerable.

    Until it doesn’t.

I don’t keep a cellar anymore, I called it quits after crossing over 100 bottles. Drank it down, and I don’t bother anymore.

That's near the point where I learned to slow down. After overbuying a couple of times, my No. 1 rule became if it won't fit it in the fridge, then I don't need it. Of course, I've also learned that I can squeeze at least 4-5 cases of beer in my fridge if I empty it of food.

My house gets pretty hot during the summer, so that helps keep me from overbuying. If I lived in a colder, northern clime, I'd be in trouble. :grimacing:

I can see collecting beers that age well, I guess.

I buy beer to drink it not look at it.

Read this thread and felt a little guilty, so I broke out a 2017 Big Bad Baptist from the cellar today. Definitely would have been next level if the coffee aroma/flavor was fresher. Decided that anything containing coffee would be kept for maybe around 6 months max going forward. Thanks for the thread.

I'm surprised you haven't yet been called wrong, a moron and a troll for this. It's always seemed like the prevailing opinion around here is that cellaring is almost always going to benefit basically any beer so long as it's "high gravity" or above some arbitrary ABV.

Try to tell this to someone who has thousands of dollars and a large portion of their self worth sitting around in their basement and you're usually met with a strong defense.

ya it seems like that attitude has shifted amongst the community as of late. If you head over to the cellaring forum you will find that these days the most common advice giving to people asking about aging a beer is "beers don't improve with age, they change, you may like the changes in some beers better than others. Don't age a beer you haven't had fresh."
Definitely a change of pace from when I first joined and it seemed much more prevalent for folks to advise aging anything and everything.
Although if you meander through the Bruery page in the pacific forum there is no shortage of folks still hoarding hundreds of bottles of beer, many of which can't possibly be consumed before they've faded

Do not worry about too much beer. Think of the party your friends will have with it when you bite the dust !

Beers are not aging like wine. If you still got a beer after 5 years, you better drink it unless you want to waste your money. Me, I can't resist drinking a beer after 1 year.

"Oh, great, dude- you just stepped on and crushed the last ping-pong ball."
"Hey, there's your golf bag. We'll play with golf balls!"
    "Cool. Hold my beer..."

Believe it or not, I snuck a golf ball into a serve in the middle of a game -- my friend was so into it that he didn't notice the different sound of the ball hitting the table, swung his paddle -- hit a brick wall and thought he'd snapped his arm because the ball went nowhere!

Keeping a cellar is cool, unless you can't keep up and are constantly opening oxidized stuff 10+ years old.

Some people think keeping beer for that long is an impressive feat or something..

It's too much RIGHT UP until Modern Times releases the sale and BL has a Stasis beer for me to buy. Then I can suddenly find the need to have more.

We're actively trying to pare down the amount we have by sharing it and drinking it when we can. But, health has to also be considered.

It's gone too far when you stoop low enough that you're spending your lunch breaks loitering in liquor stores bragging to the employees about your collection while not picking up on the body language they're throwing your way expressing they couldn't care less.
