    Compared to . . ?
On my life list, not even on the list.
But on my life list of distractions, it’s way up there.

I have a hard time thinking it is comparable to any of my hobbies. I can see home brewing beer being compared to other hobbies. But how do you consider drinking beer other than as a delicious intoxicant that has much to learn about? That was how I shaped my answer. Maybe for those who cellar/collect beer it can compare to their other collecting hobbies?

I somehow didn't put it together that your list was entirely consumables rather than hobbies per se. Sorry for mischaracterizing.

As to the larger question of "beer as hobby" there have been some good points raised but I think overall we're more critical of the descriptor than necessary. "Drinking beer" is indeed not much of a hobby, though nor is 'going to the movies'. But once you combine those things with an interest in their history and production, an eagerness to travel to specific places to experience new or hard to find examples, attendance of festivals and conventions, and a willlingness to blather online with others about the minutia of it all then I think both are reasonably within hobby territory.

And now that I type that up I realize that I need to remove bourbon from my previous list of hobbies. I'm no hobbyist, I'm mostly just a guy who really likes the taste of bourbon

The most important thing in my life besides health is AC, I hate the heat. Beers good obviously but it’s maybe a top ten. I’d give up beer before gin, with gin I can have cooling gin/tonics or Collins, or a sophisticated Martini. Or bourbon, I can make Sazeracs or Mint Juleps, Manhattan, or take it neat. Beer would fight to be a top 10.

My list is obviously a priority list about what's most important *to me*, not what I need more. Obviously I need food more than beer.

I spend a lot more time looking up new beer, weighing trades, updating my spreadsheets, enjoying beer, etc. than I do spending time with my existing friends (many of whom are in another region) or trying to make new friends, so it is higher on my list.

I would also take a great beer over a great meal any day of the week.

13 items in the top 10.- Beer is #8 of 13 in my list, so yes, it's in the top 10. I added a few extras for fun to elaborate on what else is important to me.

Gum is in there too. - I need gum.

Can mobile phone be a hobby? - Maybe, but not for me. It is a priority, though, and less important to me than beer.

The thread is a question about priorities, not ranking hobbies.

These ranking things are a pain in the ass to even ponder. Beer just is and living happens while we all can and do. Ranking things diminishes observation.

I would argue that it all depends on your personality and your perspectives on life. Personally, I love ranking things, such as rating beers and listing some of my favorite things. I like listing my favorite things because it's fun to share and compare favorite things with others.

I understand that, but rating things is truly meaningless to me. I guess I intrinsically understand what matters most when it matters most, to me. I could never worry to rank things because there are just so many things that matter. It really is just natural to know gradations of the importance of things as each day goes by.
