Any kettle sour over $8 for a bomber. Those beers and the pretentious swindlers selling them can *#@$ off.

Not so much this should #@&* off forever but at least stop for a while, any IPA with lactose.

Fruit infused kolsch beers. I get that its a boring style and American breweries want to make it more interesting but the ones Ive had were terrible. I mean you can take English IPAs and hop them up and make them better but with Koslch adding mango doesnt improve it at all.

    I have a few...

Milkshake IPA's would be my primary choice. Always terrible.

    Does. Not. Compute.

I am foaming at the mouth for my trip to Bamberg in a few weeks... Our hotel is a 5min walk from Schlenkerla and my goal is to basically drink so much Rauchbier that the smoke radiates from my pores on the way back home.

On a serious note, completely understood how the style is polarizing. Actually really surprised that my girlfriend and two buddies who come over to drink all the time love the style as well, so we drink it often and they are always requesting I brew another to get back on tap.

Agreed about fruited kolsch. But you’re off base otherwise. Kolsch isn’t boring. And English IPAs don’t need hopped up to make them better. Does everything need to be a hazy/hoppy ipa or pastry stout?

There are more than a few styles I don't care for. There are none that I think should #@&) off.

I don't think any certain styles should go away but I would like breweries to disclose when they have added lactose to a beer. Many brewers are using lactose in stouts, sours and IPAs and this information is not on the label.

Why do these anti-new beer style threads keep popping up? Are people being forced to drink things they don't like or are they upset that they are losing traditional styles on local taps? Too much consumer choice isn't a bad thing. I love hazy beer, enjoyed the few brut ipas I've had, and dislike milkshake ipas with a passion, but to each their own. Until beer captures 100% of the consumable beverage industry there will continue to be plenty of room for new styles....

Some people claim they are squeezing other styles off the shelves, but when pressed it always turns out there are more styles on shelf now than ever, not fewer

I think it has to do with a prejudicial view of the "new" beer drinkers whose love of IPA and thick, sweet stout is threatening in a general 'new guy to the scene vs. guy who's been around' kind of way.

    This makes me sad.

Beers like Kolsch, Helles and similar styles are not boring. Simple, perhaps… But if a brewery does them properly, they are beautifully complex beers. Between the wide range of delicate grain notes and the noble hop character, I find them to be some of the pleasing and complex styles if you really get a great example. They should not be absent of flavor, at all.

I have had my share of boring, bland Kolsch… That’s for sure. But that is not what they should be. Unfortunately, more often the norm as most breweries don’t have the skill level to produce these well. You really need to find a more dedicated German-focused brewery to have the best chance, as even imports are often old, oxidized, etc...

I’m just saying that pastryboiz/hazeboiz knocking styles don’t that punch you in the face, is just as annoying as puristboiz/reinheitsgebotboiz claiming that people who like hazy IPAs / pastry stouts only do so because they don’t like the taste of beer. Live and let live blah blah blah

For me (perfectboi) I like almost everything - including a classic kolsch or English ipa. Those beers don’t need fixed

The part where I said I like it?

This all comes down to semantics (of course), and maybe "boring" isn't exactly the right word, but trying to justify why kolsch is good by talking about how complex it is completely misses the point of why it is good. It's like explaining how complex mashed potatoes are.

That is a true statement but the 'untold story' there is that many of those plethora of beers on the shelves are too old.:slight_frown:

Non-cheers to so many old beers on retailers' shelves!!!!

I very much agree with the statement of "simple" there.
Ideally they should not be too one-dimensional. I drank a homebrewed Kolsch last evening and the pleasant bready malt flavor accompanied by subtle but perceptible white wine flavors were a joy to drink. I personally would have difficulty using the term "complex" here though.

While I personally would never used that word of "boring" to describe these sorts of beers I have zero difficulty understanding why other BAs would.

    Cheers!
