When was the staff insulted leading up to or after the release? If that happened, it didn’t happen on this forum.

Anyways, I recently had Cherry Anachronism Batch 2 2017 during Game of Thrones and it was excellent. The Transient fruited sours get slightly slept on in Chicagoland but it makes them easier to snag

More bottles available but once you announce not 1 but 2 double barrel stouts the neckbeards awaken & flock with their mules

Price per oz is the same so if they were worth it before then they still are....everyone needs to make their own choice but I think they're worth it

I agree I think DLD added additional traffic but as I said above when double barrel stout is mentioned it draws crowds. I wonder if the relatively low resale market will have an impact on future releases...I certainly hope so

It did seem like they moved Buckley Day up to correspond with DLD, they even let members pick up their allotments as early as Friday to possibly let a few pours float around for DLD (I brought a bottle of Reserve #2 and everyone enjoyed it). I remember it being in June or July previously.
I was more excited to pick up Transient stuff this weekend than anything at DLD, but I drink my beers and don’t care about the resale value of variants.

Buckley Day was June 2nd last year, I assumed they moved it up because this weekend is Memorial Day and on June 2nd they will be at HOMES Nucleate Festival.

Buckley day is a birthday party for my dog, so we have it on or around his (assumed) birthday. That means usually before or after Memorial Day Weekend. Homes is having their fest the weekend after and the weekend after that I am getting married, so the date was pretty much set for us. It was a Sunday this year to not conflict with Dark Lord Day. We let members get bottles early so they could get them while in the area if Sunday wasn't convenient.

As for insulting our staff, that post referenced above was one instance, but there was more on Facebook. It is disheartening to hear complaints about the speed of the line or the effort of our staff knowing full well how fast they were working, and having the actual numbers in front of me that prove it. I understand that there is no rate the line could move to make everyone happy, and expectations are not universal. Everyone can have their own perception, and I understand if being 600th in line is a different vantage point than me seeing people quickly (and I hope politely) moved through the process during the event, or when looking back on the statistics from our POS report.

You're holding back on the variant bottles because you're saving them for the reception aren't you?

    I see you Betts.

    Congrats

I didn't go but have been to a few other Transient releases and this is one I've had circled to hopefully attend some year in the future. So take it with that grain of salt. IMO a ~4 hour line for people who got there at open is absurd and justifies complaints - given in constructive manner. What it doesn't justify is being rude to staff who are doing their job, and good on you to defend them.

It sounds like you understand that and have taken this feedback to heart and are considering what to do in the future. Congrats on getting hitched and enjoy the wedding!

Considering it seemed like you guys were behind starting out I think you and the staff did amazing and were clearly busting ass to catch up. The member line didn't open up until 1130 instead of 11 but you had that line done a little after 12 I think. Considering last year the line was shorter and wasn't done until after 12 when you did open the hour early on time I'd say you improved the process. The entire reason I bought the membership was because of this benefit of early access after waiting in line for 3 hours at my first Buckley Day 2 years ago, thank you for continuing this!
There was confusion with the lines again only because the member line was never defined in any of the posts or the email. Many people lined up in the member line instead of the tap/to-go line as they thought it was the tap room line, which is understandable if you walked up from that side of the building. Just a little more clarification on that in the future would help everyone.
I wasn't able to try any of the one off variant pours because that line was so long and slow and I was limited on time. I think a limit on the number of pours per person in that line would have been the only way to have helped that, not more POS. I saw lots of people walking away with full trays of all the variants which takes a lot of time per person.

    And lastly, congrats!!!

If people got there at open, it means there was most likely 2-300 people in front of them. I remember someone saying at 10am that the line was already wrapping around the back side of the building. Getting there at open (12pm) means you are going to be waiting for a while.

Sounds like from the above it's more than 300 people. Agreed, there is going to be some expectation of a wait - I'm saying 4 hours is well beyond what I'd consider reasonable.

If you got there at noon you were likely closer to #600. Thats why I mention it being people's perception. If you get there at open and get your bottles by 3 or 4 and you had 6-700 people in front of you, I call that a win. Getting there at open doesn't mean you are close to the front when it came to this release.

We have played around with the idea of 2 days, but that takes away from the whole concept that I'm throwing a massive birthday party for my dog (which is absurd as is), and then people could just come out for both and we would have 2 super hectic/stressful days where some people get twice as much. We have also considered splitting bottles from the party entirely, but then you would have 2 lines to get through. This year our neighbors kindly let us use the alleyway to put our tents/foodtrucks, and maybe next year they will be kind enough to let us use the parking lot. If so, we would have significantly more space to accommodate that kind of turnout and it would open up a lot of possibilities for solutions like a dozen registers!!!

At the same time, the variety we release that day doesn't help things, and it is hard to move backwards in that regard. Each year we want to push the envelope a little more with what we release. Each year we have added a variant or two. A whiskey foeder has never been done before, as far as I know, and we definitely plan on that again. But we also have a lot of pretty crazy barrels filled for next year already, plus the constant demand for a barrel aged version of Bark Lord. Who knows, we might have more than 7 different bottles next year... Its somewhat masochistic at this point.

As for the members line, it did start late at about 1120. We had a lot to go over with all our staff, and having the little extra bit of rules that apply only to members is just another piece to the puzzle that makes things just a little more confusing, especially to people who don't work here and are learning everything right then. But yeah, I believe the member line was done not long after 12, so it didn't effect the normal lines much. We usually dont publicly announce member info because it is often misinterpreted. Even just posting the picture of the order card made everyone believe we were allowing members the option to by 4 full allotments. Even some members messaged about that when every single email they have received said 1.

Getting out enough information is always difficult, because at a point people will stop reading/listening, as I assume many of you have with this post. We still have people telling us they had no idea about the two lines from last year, when we released a color coded map and arial photo with all that information a week before the event and the people going through the line to wristband/ID were saying the same thing as well. They say we decided halfway through the line to do that... Again, we can't possibly make sure everyone knows everything when it comes to these releases. Misinformation is as bad as no information, and that plays a large role in the guest experience.

Your candor is appreciated. I think beer folks don't always realize adding point of sale systems for what amounts to 2-4 ultra busy days a year is neither cheap, nor trivial to implement.

If you eventually up production of these beers, I think the Odd Side format works best. They sell tickets (on eventbrite) for 2 hours time slots. You show up for your slot, have plenty of elbow room to get pours during your time and buy your bottles. I think this only works if production was increased though, otherwise it would turn into a ton of complaints because tickets would sell out so fast. I know that defeats the "party for my dog" theme but they are the best releases I've been to.

The time slot thing is tricky. We already get a lot of guests that don't know we are Eastern time... I can only see headaches from it, and then people want an exception if they miss their time slot, and then it just breaks down entirely because we wouldn't want to turn away someone who just drove a long ways to maybe get stuck in Indiana traffic and get here late.

Also, we do not plan on upping production that much. We have made the same amount of Buckley/barklord almost every year and just upped the barrel aged offerings each time. Usually, we up the variety, but each individual variant doesn't increase in amount by much. We actually had much less Ruckley this year from a terrible yield (appx 36 gallon recovered from each 53 gallon barrel filled). We obviously want more people to get their hands on these beers, as we are very proud of them and what it means for our ability to support the local Human Society (all part of why we went to 500mL). We are planning on filling more barrels this year, but that only goes so far. Hopefully the steps we take for each release improve the experience without jeopardizing the intention or the product.

I do really appreciate the way Odd Side does their limited releases like that.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it to Transient this year but last year I enjoyed sitting in line and talking with those around me. This year would have been no different and I can't wait to see what "Junie Day" holds and count down the days until Buckley Day 2020!

I suppose if people wait for a few hours and still get their full allotment then it is their choice to wait. I would be upset if I waited for several hours and then got a much smaller allotment, then your time may not be worth the wait. It didn't happen to me, just sayin. I think someone monitoring the line and able to tell people pretty quickly after open where the full allotment would cutoff would be appreciated by those in the back. Maybe that happened but doesn't sound like it from some of the posts. Maybe something to consider for next year.

Another hypothetical situation: I got in line at 10 am, got in the door and paid for my bottles at 2 pm. Got my pours and headed to the back tent. I then noticed another line for bottle pickup, I sat my happy ass back down after waiting for 4 hours and enjoyed my beers. It wasn't before I was ready to leave that I hopped in line, 40 minutes, got my bottles and left.

Now...what if when I went to pick up my bottles that I had already paid for and waited 4 hours in line to do so, had been sold out? I would have been pretty irate about that.

No allotments were cut till about 600+ people were through the line, and that was for Reserve #2 and Ruckley, which Ruckley was 1pp to start the day, so we can't go any lower on that... After those two it happened slowly, becoming limited every 100 or so people, reducing the limits or removing one from availability at a time, with it being posted on the door availability sheet, and then adjusted with subsequent order cards being handed out with options removed. Like I said before, with 7 variants, it was extremely rare anyone got the full allocation, so forecasting who will and will not get bottles (or what specific bottles) is difficult/impossible. Everyone was able to get at least 3 variants at the very end of the day, even if they arrived at closing time, with nearly everyone having the option to get minimum 4 or 5 variants even if they arrived late (at 5pm or so).

Personally, I think there is an awful lot of complaining going on about something you chose to do, knowing full well it could be a bit of a nightmare.
I wanted to go to the release but just couldn’t justify the time; whether a 2 hour wait or a 6 hour wait. And, while I would really, really, really like to try the beers, life goes on. There’s lots of good beer out there.
If events like this may upset you, don’t go. I don’t think Transient, or any other brewer, owes the public anything more than their best effort which is what they seem to have given.
