And lots of Chinese beer consumers are hoisting Snow beer:

“Overall, a very poor beer that accomplishes the purpose if you want to drink something that isn’t water but tastes like water.”

    https://www.menshealth.com/trending-news/a19529127/worlds-most-popular-beer-snow-china/

Beer consumers worldwide have a preference for light colored, light bodied and lightly flavored beers.

    Cheers!

High Life hits the spot. I used to drink loads of this stuff during the summer. When ice cold its perfect on a warm summer day.

I grew up in Langhorne Pa , was stationed st Camp Lejeune 77-79. Can’t remember anyone drinking Schlitz in NC. Back in Pa some Schmidt’s on tap definitely popular in cans, and the closer to Philly Ortliebs popped up. Fun times.

Banquet is my favorite macro, but High Life is my #2. I wouldn't turn down either.
High Life has such a great texture, but I feel Banquet is a hair more flavorful.

Just taking those four beers into consideration, I would rank them exactly the same. Now expanding this a bit, beyond those four, it would look more like the following:
    Banquet > High Life > Miller Lite > Hamm's > Coors Light > Budweiser > PBR > Bud Light

Now you've got me harkening back to @TongoRad's great AAL fest a couple summers ago. Man, that was fun! Coors, Hamm's, Old Milwaukee, PBR and Schlitz definitely stood out.

Your ranking of Coors Light has me wondering if I'm misremembering it. Maybe it's Bud Light that's carbonated water, while Coors Light has at least a little something to it?

Sounds like a summer project! :stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue:

Ooh, you just reminded me that I have a 24oz can of Founders Solid Gold waiting for me to try.

That's such a good size for these comparisons, too- helps avoid the problem of having too much beer in the fridge .

I don't know how it was in the rest of the country, but among my high school group in the early 80s Lite beers were what the girls drank, mostly. The big shift must have come when men started to become dedicated to them as well.

When I was a kid in the early 70's Schlitz was quite popular in North Carolina, at least among family/friends around me that drank beer. By the mid and late 70's I don't remember any of them drinking Schlitz due to the massive production quality problems that beset the brewery. In late 70's N.C. I remember Miller High Life and Budweiser being the predominant choices unless someone was trying to impress with a Heineken or St Pauli Girl.
Article at this link covers the downfall of Schlitz:

That was a good read, by the time I was drinking beer it was a dying brand. The last time I saw it I bought it, but it’s been gone for a long time now, a bit pricy too, comparitavly speaking.

It's all relative of course. The new light beers were relatively lighter compared with the regular beers, American regular beers were and are comparatively lighter compared with many European countries' beers, and some European countries' beers are lighter than others. But there are differences between them, to claim otherwise would be inaccurate I think. I don't think anyone that thinks that there is no difference would find work in a brewery producing pale lager beers. Each country has their standard of beer, and breweries producing beers to that standard, with imports offering a glimpse into the standard of other countries, preferred by some and not by others.

Interesting. Were the girls drinking Miller Lite despite the sports figure heavy advertising? Or were they drinking another light beer?

Yeah I imagine there had to have been both people switching from regular to light beer and then people who started drinking light beer from the get go. The switchers are interesting since they were obviously swayed to drink something new. Once light beer was established and the marketing ingrained new drinkers probably saw it simply as beer, and not something newfangled.

Miller high Life has a much cooler jingle. Coors was the beer being bootlegged in Smokey and the Bandit. Sounds like a coin toss to me. If you wanna go by taste, it's also pretty much a coin toss.

    Agreed. But I stand by:

That's certainly one way of looking at things, but I think it leaves us with a poorer understanding of the world of beer (if we stop at that general observation). It leaves the nuance to upstart craft breweries and their beers. Most countries in Europe have a history of lager beer brewing that spans at least a century, that period of time has helped to cement domestic brewing industries which have their own standard of brewing (with typically at least a couple of different strenght classes at the very least). I wont subscribe to the idea that they are all the same.

Patrik, I did not state they are "the same". I simply pointed out they have commonality in terms of color, body, etc.

Heck, I wouldn't even state that Miller High Life and Coors Banquet are "the same".

    Cheers!

Okay, maybe I misunderstood you then. My point was that the American light beer category represented something new in the American market, offering something which was even lighter than the regular beer. I interpreted your post (which presented a line of argument I have seen you use several times) as saying something along the lines of "well every other country has done the same thing", i.e there was nothing new about the American light beer category. I would argue that there was.

With our group Michelob Light was the preferred choice, and it was a pretty popular beer overall. But about that advertising campaign, I don't doubt that it was intended to change the image of the whole category. And turned out to be pretty successful, it would seem . It would be interesting to know when it was introduced.
