The only time i’ve had an issue with an outgoing box was in PA.

I shipped a box from MA to OH. The box was last scanned in PA then disappeared.

I know there’s no way to dictate the route the box takes. All I know is that I’ve heard about issues in PA and my only issue was in PA

Guy I know in Maryland had his last 2 outgoing beer trades (April/May 2019 timeframe) confiscated by Fed Ex. He uses noise shakers and prints his own labels etc, uses every beer packaging tip given pretty much. Anyone else finding Fed Ex confiscated more frequently lately?

No issues with Fed=Ex to date. Always very fast like 2-3 days across country never any questions. I actually had one box with a beer that leaked and they still delivered lol, box smelled like beer, zero questions.

    I stopped using noise makers.

I think it's time for him to use a different carrier

That is nuts. Great use of taxpayers funds.

Haven't had any issues with regular shipments from SOCAL to TX, MA and NC.

I almost had a scare recently, sent to SD. FEDEX showed it wasn't delivered, and more than 1 week past it's due date, showed pending delivery. I checked with live chat, and they would get back to me with status. A few hours I get a phone call, and they said it was delivered on time, just didn't update the system. whew!

Yes it is, but then the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has a history of engaging in stupid, wasteful activities. At this point I think they feel as if they have a certain reputation they need to uphold, and so they go looking for stupid things to spend their time and money on (like the incident in this article).

I wasn't the least bit surprised by what I read in that article.

Also wasn't surprised but wonder how much tax money they think is being left on the table... I have heard about bottles of Pappy selling on the black market for a couple thousand dollars a piece and that some sellers are moving lots of products (beer/wine/spirits) under a single user profile.

I may be way off base but I am under the impression that whether you pay taxes or not you need a special license to sell alcohol. Is it an ATF issue if you paid your state excise taxes on your pappy flip but don't have the proper license?

You definitely need a license/permit to sell alcohol but you also need to pay all the appropriate taxes (not just sales tax).

Except this site strictly prohibits the exchange of cash for beer.

Plus it really varies from state to state. For instance, in Arizona I believe, any alcohol you purchase has to go through a retail outlet. That tends to make wine and beer very expensive if it's not brought in by a local wholesaler/distributor. (as you end up paying the winery/brewery price for your alcohol, along with the retailer's customary mark-up, in any direct sale arrangement). When I was in Maryland, I was told by a winery in California that in order for them to continue to legally send me wine, they had to pay a fairly sizeable, one time licensing fee, pay an annual tax, and then collect Maryland sales tax at the point of sale. Apparently, they felt they could make enough money from direct sales of wine to make it worth their while (and so they complied).

Part of the problem in Pennsylvania (I believe), is that any beer sold in the state has to be accounted for and licensed by the PLCB. My recollection is that this is typically taken care of by local wholesalers/distributors. I'm assuming this is probably something the Massachusetts' gentleman didn't do (and probably couldn't have done, even if he wanted to).

That being said, that the PLCB went to this kind of effort and trouble to set up a sting operation to nail some poor schmuck in Massachusetts for what most would consider a very minor infraction... hey, that's how they roll over at the good old PCLB.

No noise masking? Wow. I am hard-core I suppose. I indiviually bag every bottle, only ship using styrofoam shippers, and I literally buy Tic-Tacs in bulk and use them to ship.

    "But Sag, that is expensive!"

Yeah, and so is replacing a bottle of Fundamental Forces or 24 cans of Other Half or two Reserve 18s, as I have seen others have to do whether it was a result of shippers confiscating or bottles breaking.

On the topic of noise makers, I worked in a fedex facility for some time and something that sounded like small parts tinkling around would stand out much more than a silent box

I would agree, if the box is silent, but most are not in my experience. They tend to sound like what it is--beer or wine being sloshed around. That is where tic tacs rock, as it sounds like what it is--a box of candy/mints. If asked when dropping it, I just say it is a care package for a college student. And again, IMO, it sounds MUCH better than the "glug-glug" sound of 750ml bottles sloshing around when the box is picked up. In 250+ trades between various sites, I have had no issues at all from my side. Now, when receiving (as listed in my examples above), I have not been so lucky.

If you pack bottles sideways you will have tons of noise. Upright packed tight and you will not. Easy as that. Every time I've got a package with a bunch of pennies in a six pack holder I've always said "what the hell?" to when I got that.

Agree on several points... Pennies in a taped together can holder is ridiculous and does not really mask the sound of beer. Also, yes, upright makes a huge difference. However, if you pack 3-6 750ml bottles in a styrofoam shipper, it still makes noise and sounds like beer in my experience.

I've shipped hundreds of boxes with horizontal cans / bottles with pennies tapped in can holders. Knock on wood, I've never had an issue with a package (investigated or broken). I use USPS flat rate religiously. I believe 2 factors come into play. Geographic location and the service you use. Some states I've notices "care more" or have stricter laws / requirements. I only use a shipping annex store whom I've built rapport with. I think when using an annex service, usps puts the honest on the store to verify contents. I'm lucky the store is walking distance from my house as well. All this leads to high shipping bills every month though!
