Herren Pils is still possibly my favorite beer of all time. If I only had a few hours in Bamberg I'd probably just do Keesmann and Klosterbrau, although the food at both places isn't as good as the stuff available elsewhere. Oddly, the food at Ambrausianum (where the beer is nothing special) is quite good, although it's a bit nontraditional.

Any recommendations for best food here? I've noted Ambrausianum, but anything else you know of?

As far as traditional German food goes, I like the food at Spezial and Schlenkerla the most of all of the brewery taverns. Schlenkerla has the best obatzda I've had anywhere. Faessla has huge schnitzel portions if you're especially hungry. There's a Hofbrau restaurant in the old town area with nice variety of local and Mediterranean-influenced dishes. If you catch them in white asparagus season, they have a ton of items that feature that, too. If you need a break from the local cuisine, Der Pelikan is a really good Thai restaurant that's roughly midway between Faessla and Kaiserdom. There's a good Spanish place right around the corner from from Klosterbrau.

Kachelofen has been very good the last couple of times in Bamberg.

Special Keller has decent food. Wilde Rose is a biergarten on the same hill, I remember good food the time we were there, and a wider Bier selection.

Never been to Kachelofen, but will put it on my radar as well.

Am very curious about the Weyermann tour. Never done that (or visited Cafe Abseits) but am thinking about doing both in August. Going to finally visit Kaiserdom as well.

Just to add to the mix, I've had great meals at Greifenklau, Faeslla and Klosterbrau too!

It's a worthy visit. It is pretty typical of most any manufacturing tour to see machinery, etc. of the malting process (hot and humid), but you also get to see the in-house brewery as well as the warehouse across the street. At the end of the tour you will sample 5-6 of the in-house beers, which are all pretty good. If you are a homebrewer you'll want to get yourself some red overalls to help you feel authentic when brewing.

That was a joke, I'm sure.

The Red overalls have some strings attached.

The Bierstadt team rocks the red overalls, so I know about those.

In Bamberg, I take all of my guests to Schlenkerla for the Bamber Onion and almost everyone leaves saying it was their most memorable meal. However, Mahrs is coming on strong with its cuisine. I have been there twice in the last few months with larger groups and the food and service has been spectacular!

Weyermann tour was excellent! We had really enjoyed it. And the Bamberg onion from Schlenkerla was amazing, for sure!

Currently sitting at Kundmuller outside of Bamberg to enjoy the Fat Head's collab (our home Brewery!). Crazy to finally drink some beer here with some West Coast hopping! It's really good.

Which brewery collaborated with Fat Heads? I'm guessing Mahr's?

Brauerei Kundmüller. They did both a Head Hunter and Hop JuJu collab. We just tried the Head Hunter one (along with the Rauch), it was great. It was a 20 minute drive out of Bamberg, nice drive. Nice place as well!

Interesting. I doubt I'll make it there, but maybe I'll spot some at the Bierothek.

Just got back home tonight... Supposed to arrive yesterday, but our flight was cancelled and postponed nearly 24hrs. Plane (787-10) didn't leave Newark due to maintenance issue and then crew rest restriction. So our plane never showed up.

So we stuck around Frankfurt for the day, which was really... Um... Let's just say one day in Frankfurt was enough for a lifetime for us!

Took a train to the main station downtown, walked around, checked out some sights... Found a Chipotle (woo!) in a shopping mall which was awesome... But yeah, complete 180 from all the other beautiful cities. No 'charm' and just dirty, felt a bit uneasy walking around honestly. Stopped at two top rated places we found for beer in FRA (can't recall the name right now), which were both OK. Frankfurt was just not a place we enjoyed (as limited as our experience may have been!). Especially when you just come from Bamberg...

On the bright side, our replacement aircraft this morning (777-200) was practically empty... About 25 people out of the 260 seats or so, which was amazing. Got to sprawl out in the entire row, had the plane to ourselves practically. Most everyone else re-booked on other flights once our first flight was cancelled. Glad we stuck around, because that was an incredible flight!

Funny thing is, if our original flight didn't get cancelled, we would have got into Newark right after their emergency landing Saturday which shut down the airport, so likely would have been diverted. So would have been a far worse fiasco, most likely. So it all worked out, just wish we were stuck in Munich or something instead!

Again, big report coming soon this week with each city and general notes!

Glad that you made it back okay, and it sounds like from your various posts that it was a great trip. Looking forward to the write-up with pics when you get the time.

Can't be sure w/o all the details, but you could be due EU261 compensation of 600 euro per person for the delayed flight.

I read about that, but not sure how to go about looking into this further. When I called United about our cancellation and the fact we needed to get a hotel for another night and stuff like that, they gave us United vouchers for like $200-300 or something (waiting to receive the official amount). Plus another separate voucher for $200 for the flight cancellation. So in total, about $400-500 in compensation in the form of United credit, vs. cash.

    @ClarkstonMark

I contacted United about it, so we will see! Thanks for the heads up again about that.

Our flight was cancelled due to a maintenance check in EWR, which then got cancelled due to crew rest reasons. So it sounds like it would be eligible, from what I have read.
