Side note - I wonder how many people realize “Guinness Extra Stout” is NOT the same as what is commonly associated with “Guinness”?

I bet there are several people that mistakenly voted for it without ever having drank it.

Dude I was #4, and shocked to see it was dead last. Newcastle is a Premier League Saturday staple!

I love Newcastle, It was one of the first Ales I ever had. It was huge in getting me into drinking Ale, wanting to research it and making me the drinker I am today. I remember drinking it out of my Ren Fest mug, it was an amazing experince for me.

I have been drinking Guinness for a long time and have similar memories with it and had it first. If Newcastle had the tall bottles in my area, it may have been a lot harder choice for me.

I was close to chosing Leffe, while I have amazing memories with it I only started drinking it this year. I am intersted to see if they have the tall bottles as well.

Yeah, skip the Leffe Blonde and go straight for the Brown. That's a classic beer.

I'm not sure if they have distribution in Maryland but if you see it you should give it a try. English pale ale, so definitely more on the malty side and very laid back. Tasty and usually under 10 per pack

47 IBUs I have read for the Canadian brewed Guinness Extra Stout, which was good. The Dublin brewed version had less in the IBU department but I thought it was superior.

It's so true. How often our great memories/experience elevate otherwise just ok beer, food, etc. to the next level.

Yeah Its interesting how are tastes can be seasonal. I have never been like that though. Leffe is a Wheat Ale?

Leffe Blonde is a solid beer. I first had it at a sidewalk cafe on a hot day in Paris

All three are more decent than most people are willing to admit. I've had Belgians tell me that Leffe Blonde is the Bud of Belgium and New Castle could earn a few more points by avoiding clear bottles. If you put any one of the three in front of me I would drink it. I chose the Guinness because I have one in my fridge and I am going to drink it right now - thanks for the idea.

I am not Belgian but from my visits to Belgium I would state that Jupiler (top selling Belgian beer in Belgium) is the Bud of Belgium.

    Cheers!

My friends were just trying to convey their poor opinion of the beer. I like it better than they did.

Ditto on the IPA/hop comments...I like a deep malt flavor that gets a more equal footing with the hops. I found that Stone IPA got pretty close to this.

Apart from Guinness, what other beers are the benchmark for dry Irish stout? Beamish? Murphy's? Seems to me that Guinness is widely regarded as the definition of the style. My taste has started migrating toward dryer beers and, notwithstanding its rather thin mouthfeel, I consider it to be the standard.

"Thin mouthfeel" ? From the OP's Guinness Extra Stout? Are you confusing it with the nitrogenized Guinness Draught, a totally different beer ?

The Waldos'. It's so close to that price point that it's no contest.

Of the poll choices, Guinness. Also no contest.
