I don’t mind cloudy/hazy IPA’s. I just need some actual bitterness in them. These NE IPA’s are too sweet, with no bite.

Haze craze with a little bite is definitely my favorite type of IPA

Good post. I love great beers in a variety of styles. NEIPAs take 8 of my top 200 beer scores entered into BA (M-43, Strawberry Marbles, Sosus, Scorpious Morchella and LeJus rated my top 5), I do like trying all beer types, but I also enjoy a more balanced LeJus.

That’s my biggest complaint. Just too darn sweet.

At least 1 of 3 things typically bother me with New England style IPAs.

    Low carb
    Sweetness
    Chalky mouthfeel

I understand why we all chase this style, cuz when it’s done right it’s just downright delicious, but find myself being drawn towards cleaner, more reliable beers. I’ve gotten tired of the hazy gamble

Your favorite IPA is a high-ABV pastry stout with an IPA meritage chaser. Do not lie to me!

    This feels downright classy.

On another note, for science, for the folks that describe some NE IPAs as chalky, do you find milkshake style IPAs as chalky? I find them to be chalky and gritty tasting and all around off-putting. WTF causes that? And this has nothing to do with PW, but here we are.

For the record, had a 2018 The Coffee Break Abduction today. Slight green pepper, but overall drinking very well.

I’ve gotten it is straight up NEIPA and in a few milkshakes. So not sure if it’s exclusive to one or the other.

That chalky thing must either come from hops or yeast. Not sure which.

    When is galaxy unicorn returning?!?!?

I hope all of this discussion will get Pipeworks back to focusing on excellent piney, hoppy, bitter DIPAs, and not as much on hazy, oat IPAs.

I absolutely agree on the milkshake front. I've had blaze orange and the phase 3 one and had to pour both out because it had the feel of that liquid pink medicine I had as a child. I'm not sure what causes it but I don't like it. On the other hand Lake Zurich has had two delicious ones that didn't have that gritty taste.

i'm not a scientist but i speculate the massive doses of lupulin powder, the residual proteins from higher mash temps and the build up of the water profile with salts and hydroxides results in the chalky/grittiness.

I didn't realize this until this past weekend and/or it may be just Arlington Hts Trader Joe's. Buuuut, they sell individual Pipeworks pints for make-your-own 6-pack. The can price is the price of 4-pack divided by 4. I liked being able to purchase 5 of their beers (doubled-up on Velocity of Light) to see if there was a favorite without committing to a 4 pack.

I know some craft beer stores do this but Trader Joe's may be more convenient for some of you.

Also, you don't have to build a 4 pack or 6 pack. You can just buy one can of any beer they sell.

Damn, Arlington Hts prevents Trader Joe's from doing this.

Bummer. I've bought single cans at LaGrange and Downer's Grove Trader Joe's.

I've been to a few ones in the city and they did not have pricing for individual cans, which I took that I could not break apart the 4-packs and buy singles. Bummer.
