I've encountered this as well. Their hoppy beers specifically certainly taste very similar to me, but not 'the same'. I definitely think this is the case to far more extent with Lagunitas than with some of the other breweries mentioned - I mean Southern Tier, really?

Yes Yes Yes. ALL their hoppy beers have that same malty and overly sweet finish once they've become 2 months old and older. When very Fresh, their beers are fantastic and while similar, distinct from one another. IMHO, Lagunitas's hoppy beers fade faster than any others.

Brown Shugga with a couple years of aging is wonderful and very different. And how bout that Gnarlywine...tasty & different, obviously. Beyond that I think their 22oz brews are at a good price point...Stoopid sells for $4.49 - 4.99 around Denver. Cheers!

I think that all of their beers have a similar hop characteristic. I also happen to absolutely love it! But couldn't you say the same thing about most breweries? I think every brewery has a distinguishable taste, that is all their own.

Didn't you mean to ask about Unibroue?

All I know is that Imperial Red and Brown Sugga' taste almost EXACTLY the same to me when fresh. The difference only comes after a a few months, Sugga' starts tasting more malty and molassesly while IR utterly falls apart at the seams, lol.

I drank 2 of there beers quite a bit over summer and didn't notice that they were similar in flavors. Not like Unibroue or something. Those 2 beers were Stoopid and Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale.

They definitely have a house recipe that can be tasted through out pretty much all their brews, and it's awesome! Nothing tastes like a Lagunitas, and i always find myself wondering how they came up with that signature taste. I usually picture some guy just throwing in 15 different hop varieties in the kettle, fermenting with 4 different yeast strains, and magically ending up with this glorious elixer!

Can't wait for Lagunitas Sucks to hit the shelves again, it slaps on Brown Shugga IMO.

It probably has something to do with the water, grains, hops and yeast.

I think the High temp Mash schedule they use tends to create a lot of similarities from beer to beer and really defines what makes Lagunitas house flavor to me.

Lagunitas (and many other commercial breweries) use hop extract, but this is only for bittering additions. They still use whole hop flowers or pellets for the aroma and flavor additions. This allows them to retain more wort, and save mroe money because of it.

I think Lagunitas does brew a lot of similar "American strong ales" that are very similar, but if you tried them side by side, I think you'd really appreciate the nuances of each beer. For example, if you tried brown shugga with hairy eyeball and undercover shutdown, you might notice some similarities. (Probably mash profile, water profile, and yeast strain,) but the beers themselves would taste worlds apart. That is the beauty of brewing. You can tweak beers to an exact taste or idea.

I find Unibroue's beers to be more similare to one another than Lagunitas, because of a very unique and characteristic yeast strain. But I love all Unibroue beers and find them to be some of the best belgian styles out there.

Love Lagunitas, but just tried the Dogtown Pale Ale and thought it tasted JUST like the IPA, maybee a little milder... yet Hop Stoopid still remains as one of my favorites, and Undercover wasn't too bad at all.

Actually called the phone # on the side of Stoopid bomber one day and was very pleased to speak with someone at the brewery who was just as happy to talk as I was... very cool people.

Funny, I've ticked quite a few of their beers, had many repeats, and never really thought this. Great beer, btw. Favorites are Sucks and Imperial Red.

They do, they told me at the brewery. That is why their beers are so cheap.

Hmm, i personally think their pale ale has a stronger malt backbone and i think the IBU's are higher, but all our palates are different. If i had a complaint about something tasting the same, i'd have to call out all belgian brews. Dubbel, Triple, Quad, Blonde, even some Saison/Farmhouse all taste the freaking same. That style is horrible and played out...

I find many similarities in their beers. I think its primarily the yeast but also probably their dry hopping techniques as well. The majority of their beers seem to have similar aromas when fresh. Perhaps they only use a few hop varieties.
