Bummer for sure. They always had some really interesting beer on tap. They had a pay-to-play issue right? That’s why it was cash only?

I think what really did them in was the ill-advised attempt to become a taco joint. We always went for the tots, everyone I know went for the tots. One time after that rebrand I vented about this to the bartender and it definitely looked like he had heard many people make the same complaint, and had some practiced answer that did not satisfy me.

Ah man this makes me sad to see. I used to live in the area and that place was my jam. Blown away to hear they got rid of the tots though...

Lower depths will always hold a place in my heart as the first and likely last time I will ever drink a mickeys 40 inside a bar.

And pay like, 12 bucks for it.

Gotta give them credit for trying something different in area of the city that doesn’t like different

5 years ago my favorite drinking spots in Boston area were LD and Sunset. Now both are gone. Pretty sad day.

However, Poe alienated a lot of regulars when he changed Depths from a comfort food dive to a taco bar. Even though he eventually brought back tots/dogs to the menu I personally didn't feel the place had the same vibe anymore. Bummer for sure.

The few times I went in --it was pretty empty. I remember it way back when it was Deli Haus

This is sad to hear. Was my go to place before red sox games. Would sit at the bar with the stubhub app, eat and crush a few, and score a last second ticket on the cheap. Got front row for ALCS game 1 last year for $85 (also tried to bare hand a screaming foul ball and mangled my finger in the process).

It was generally very full on game/event days, as least last summer when I last went.

Wouldn't be completely shocking either if the landlord jacked the rent on them. Even though it's a block and a half from kenmore, it's still primo real estate.

There's also the "Gen Z and Millenials don't use cash" thing.

A bit pricier than I preferred but for a while they had a really good selection of stuff I didn't see elsewhere. Oh well, Cornwalls is right across Kenmore Square, a family-owned bar ready to cater to all your gameday or everyday needs.

Haha, I once got to witness an after-midnight screaming match between a former sweetheart of mine and a Deli Haus waitress, sparked by the former's request that they turn down the music (the first Agent Orange record, as I recall). While their argument escalated both kept shooting glances at me so, unsure of what I was expected to do, I responded by playing air guitar. Those were happier times.

I was there Tuesday night before a game and it was pretty empty.

    Sage advice for most situations!

Bad service, high prices, cash only, comparable taplist to other options, mediocre to bad food.

    Why would I go there?

This is from the boston.com article, and sheds a little light on why it closed.

“We had a great 13-year run at Lower Depths, but we decided to focus our energy and effort into Parish, Tip Tap and Bukowski’s while we pursue a couple new exciting opportunities that we hope to announce soon,” said Gordon Wilcox of the Wilcox Hospitality Group.

Visited a few times pre-RedSox games after it opened.

Could always count on rude service from hipster jackasses, over-priced/short-poured beer, & that damn cash-only policy. Plus all listed prices were “plus tax “ which is always fun at a crowded bar screwing with coins.

    Luckily I found Cornwall’s & never returned.

Being cash only in this day and age is basically flipping your patrons the double bird. "We don't feel like paying the 2-3% credit card processing fees, so you go over there and pay the 5%+ fee to get cash out of the ATM."

My wife runs a small vendor business for fairly cheap goods and uses a Square reader anyone can get for free for card transactions, so I have no pity for any business that can't do so.

Can't argue with any of that (except service, I had good luck I guess on that front) but they were one of the few places in that area not going for the sports bar vibe so I'll still miss them a little bit (though certainly not the cash only nonsense).

I'll have to check out Cornwall's. Somehow that's never been on my radar.

While I agree with this 100%, anybody who is still paying ATM fees needs to switch banks. Talk about getting the double bird...

Maybe this is ignorance on my part, or laziness, but I feel like it's a hassle to switch banks.

Would this require me actually going to a bank?

Because the only thing I hate more than ATM fees is having to actually go to a bank.

But I hardly use an ATM, so it doesn't really seem worth the gas money to head to my bank and switch.

It's not really about your bank in these cases, it's about those generic privately owned ATMs that "cash only" and convenience stores type places typically have on premise that charge you a fee no matter who your bank is. Casinos pull the same trick. Though I suppose there might be some banks that reimburse those.
