I'm just curious to the price inflation on the Double Barrel version. Because I'd be shocked if they didn't already use a variety of whiskey barrels on just the regular Bourbon Count blend.

It should be noted that Its not a GI issue as I would have said the same thing about any brewery who did the back to back year barrel blending from the same exact distillery had I known about it. I still feel like they ordered barrels from them and got a different year by mistake and decided to throw it on in what i feel to be a tacky way. The part about ABI's reputation hurting Heaven Hill, was the real dig at GI in my original comment.

"You feel like..." based on what exactly?

Elijah Craig SmB is a NAS whiskey now, I am sure they are dumping 8-12yr barrels all the time, I doubt there is any "accidentally ordered" going on here. You're doing a lot of reading between the lines here my friend.

I'm sure they do use a variety.

Hard to guess the price difference, I would think the physical barrel adds some to it, but the evaporation loss from an additional year in barrel is what's going to hurt the most, I'd imagine.

For all my years (over 10) selling alcohol (beer, wine, spirits), it's atypical to have such a similar double barrel grouping like this and put it on the label in such a manner. Usually a distillery/brewery using used barrels from another source would mix it up in some capacity("aged 6 mths in Solera casks then aged 6 mths in Bourbon casks") or just say they aged it in a certain companies barrels("aged in Elijah Craig Barrels") with no need for the age statement from any of what could possibly be a mixed batch of barrels for whatever reason. So while its possible that this one year difference in barrels is so strikingly different that they just felt compelled to mention it, I highly doubt it and feel that it was unnecessary to put it that way on the label. Was there something so special about either of those years that it's worthy of mention? Maybe you know something I don't about it. Either way I felt it was uninspired to say the least.

In that case... that's not at all what I thought you were saying, and in fact I agree. Pretty much just pandering to post-craft beer/ new-bourbon people who don't really understand bourbon or the fact that a 12yr bourbon is not definitely better than a 9yr one (or 11yr, as the case may be). Older not necessarily better, and yeah, in this case, these age statements are not going to have a noticeable impact on seasoning the barrels.

I still don't think it was some kind of accident, but worth mentioning on the label? Probably not. To them, well they probably won't have much trouble selling this no matter how they describe it, for better or worse.

Exactly my issue with it, slapping more, IMO, unnecessary data on the bottle to pander when it really has no bearing on if the beer is going to be good or not. Why not just say "Elijah Craig Barrels" unless there's something unique or noteworthy about one or the other. While i'm sure the beer will be fine(hope) it just seemed tacky. Me calling it an accident was because I didn't think a major company would do something like that on purpose given all that I had seen. Felt like someone was being an opportunist in the Marketing Dept and wanted to generate hype on the (perhaps not on purpose) fact that two different barrels were found to be used instead of maybe one type. *shrug* guess we'll see.

I totally agree with you. But perhaps you could choose a better word to use next time. Cheers!

I cringe at the thought of Wheatwine being the only variant available in my neck of the woods :confounded:

Count me out for that one, too viscous and weirdly sweet. Not like cloying...but not for me.

Yup, quite sweet, which I suppose is polarizing. Still, nowhere close to Avery Rumpkin which is waaaaay past cloying, like they filled the bottle with sugar then added as much beer as the sugar could absorb!

For the same reason they filed fake labels last year.

So how do you know the labels were fake?

    What was the reason?

We know they were fake because they were never released. It was a way to distract people from what was really to come.

that's poor logic. when things don't work out, they don't get released. not being released ≠ "fake".
