Do your best to skip San Antonio, IMO. Maybe find a taproom that brings in other Texas beers. In Austin it’s Live Oak first and everyone else a distant second.

Ignorant statement. Künstler brought home a medal at last year's GABF. Freetail won a gold medal two years ago in the barrel aged stout category at GABF. Weathered Souls pumps out great NEIPAs if you're a hazebro. Weathered Souls has plenty of visitors from Austin who make the drive down I35 for great hazy IPAs.

Ignorant? I disagree. I mean, two golds in two years for one of the nations biggest cities is nothing to sneeze at...but I’m basing my opinion on my own consumption of 50+ different San Antonio beers. If you want amazing enchiladas, SA is the place. Craft beer? Not so much. You are free to agree or disagree with my opinion, but it is far from ignorant.

    Cheers dude!

Weathered Souls for beer and 2M for BBQ are the only reasons I go to/travel through SA. GABF awards don’t mean anything to me. Freetail is a shadow of its former self.

This. Weathered Souls is making the best stouts in Texas, easily.

What happened to Freetail? I know Scott left, but never got wind of why that happened or if he's up to other beer stuff. Was there any public explanation as to why he left?

As a sporadic traveler to San Antonio, Freetail was a nice place to have a pint and a pie.

    Also, 2M is awesome.

I'm going to San Antonio for work next week and I'm looking for a few recommendations. I'll be staying in the Riverwalk area and I won't have a car, so it'll be tough to get to the outlying areas. Any suggestions for good bars, bottle shops or breweries in that part of town?

islla st, weathered soul and kunstler are my top 3 SA breweries, probably in that order, kunstler probably the closes to downtown. Southerleigh in beautiful hotel is great restaurant, pretty good beer. bottle shops are not too sexy in SA but plenty of beer bars closer to riverwalk but still uber ride (flying saucer, growler exchange, big hops).

If the weather is nice get on the river walk and walk to Southerleigh, good beer and food, but personally would eat at Cure. Have fun

Just came back from Austin yesterday. Jester King is a must visit (I made the El Cedro release Thursday).

Friendly Spot has a large selection, but can be pricey. I haven’t been there in a while, but I’ve always enjoyed myself.

If you go just be sure and ask the price before they pour or pop a bottle.

Used to enjoy friendly spot a lot more. Prices have gone up and unfortunately the beer selection quality has not matched the price increase. Good atmosphere however if weather is nice and Spurs game is on
