Recently, I was scrolling through IG and saw a post regarding Trillium having an upcoming beer fest in August called Field Trip. Interested I looked at the event, checked out some of the announced breweries and looked at the ticket prices. Seemed reasonable... $50 for a beer festival with some well-known names, so why the heck not... I decided to buy a ticket. But when I went to the purchase page I was hit with a wall of text of the event and what was allowed and not allowed. So me being the curious individual that I am decided to read through it and found a part that I found very interesting.

So I am not sure if this is a new business model or just Trillium looking to make some additional capital gains from us but I found the below interesting:

Each 21+ General Admission Ticket includes:

    • (1) Commemorative Trillium Field Trip 6.5 oz Glass
    • (5) Beer Tickets
    • Pours of world-class beers, live entertainment, games and more!

Food, merchandise and additional beer tickets will be available for purchase at the event. Beer tickets are $4 each.

I have been to a few events including Extreme Beer Fest, Pastrytown and Green City (Plus other local ones) and have never seen an event (Outside of an Oktoberfest) where you would pay an entrance fee then have to pay for additional sample size pours of beers. What are your thoughts on this? Am I just another crazed individual ranting on the internet over something trivial?

I think beer tickets/tokens at a fest is fairly common. VT Brewers Festival in Burlington and Siptemberfest in Waitsfield VT are two that I specifically know of that give a certain amount of tickets with admission and allow purchase of other tickets.

6.5 oz is not sample sized pours, 2 oz is sample size pours. Vast difference right there and I think Trillium clarified that they do not want to do 2 oz pours so they have to charge for the additional drink tickets.

Frankly Foam’s Funk on the Water that same day seems like a better value. Same price for VIP, but you get two wild ale bottles, 10 four oz pours (vs 5 from Trillium) and additional drink tickets are $2 ($4 for Trillium). Brewery list also about 50% larger for funk as opposed to field trip. Granted it’s in Burlington VT, but beyond that it’s a much more compelling value proposition imo.

I don't have much love for Trillium, but there are a number of fests in the area that have some kind of cover charge and pay-as-you-drink - NERAX and Harpoon Fest are two popular ones that come to mind.

Pours are NOT 6.5oz. They are 3oz and 5oz pours in a 6.5oz glass.

Since you couldn't pay me to drink only wild ales I think the value is very much personal with that fest.
Partial list of the Trill fest beers are quite impressive. Bottle Logic FO, BA Affo, Double PB PM Dawn, Big Poppa, great stuff from Equilibrium and Other Half. A bunch of beers still to be disclosed including Monkish.

Goods From The Woods does drink tix but overall it’s an incredible value. $50 ticket includes branded teku, first drink ticket, and 2 bottles to-go.

I’ve been told that the ticket/token systems at vt brew fest and siptemberfest are due to Vermont liquor laws

Makes sense, I think MA has similar if greater than 2oz.
