Upon further review, I believe that Pils are staying even as a percentage of the market in my region, all beers are battling for market share against the ubiquitous IPAs (in terms of the "Quality" beers).
Its the lighter beer time of year; keep looking, you are bound to find a few nice ones.

I feel like it is the opposite here in CT - I am noticing more and more local pilsners (and helles), especially now that the weather is warm. We even have a new-ish place in New Haven called East Rock that does only lagers -pilsner, helles, schwarzbier, vienna, marzen, maibock, etc.

The only decline in Pils that makes makes me sad is when the Pils are disappearing from the shelf....of my fridge!

Cheers to that one! They got Southern Tier not long ago in the stadiums area, nice addition to the city to bring on another solid brewery.

Gimme a Pikeland Pils, Stoudts Pils, Straub Pilsner (when they decide to make it), Prima Pils any day. All solid and readily available (when produced in the "seasonal" case for some).

Add Neshaminy Creek’s Trauger Pils, Stoudts Pils, and Troeg’s Sunshine Pils and you’ve got my full list.

And there are the high quality Pilsners from the 'new' PA breweries of Root Down, Sterling Pig, 2SP,...

In about 45 minutes I will be drinking a new Pilsner from a 'new' brewery of Conshohocken Brewing:

    "KELLER PILS
Our Keller Pils is a faithful recreation of a classic style with a slight twist. Brewed with traditional European hops, augmented with palisade, the result is a clean tasting unfiltered lager accented with a crisp hop kick.5.2% ABV"

    Cheers!

A few minutes ago, I just finished a Pivo from FW, which we do not usually see in my area. As I am in Western Pa, I see Prima a lot on the shelves. However, I agree that there seems to be less available.

I forgot Sunshine Pils. Another very favorite indeed.

    One of my favorites.

But since it went year round it disappeared in Boston.

    Hmmm, peculiar.

Here the problem with Sunshine has become the same as with other year round beers, finding the fresh ones.

It’s possible it’s still around, but as you say, too old.

I just stopped looking. I really miss it as a seasonal.

If you can find it fresh, Lagunitas Pils is always good.

Oddly I honestly enjoy my pils most with a month or two on them. I always feel if they sit a little longer they clear up and are cleaner tasting to me. To be honest it could just be tasting with my eyes too not really sure.

I especially think this is true with smaller breweries that don’t have the same filtering as the bigger regional ones. Anyway just wanted to chime in...I also have noticed the German ones I buy taste great months and months after bottle date. Then again I have never been lucky enough to have the privilege of drinking them fresh in Germany, one can dream.

Among the popular style, what would you guys rate as the best German Pilsner you've had?

Rothaus, Ayinger, Prima Pils. Those are my favorite at least.

In Germany, Keesmann Herren Pils and Kneitinger Edel Pils. Here, Ayinger, Weihenstephaner, and Saint Arnold 5 O'Clock Pils. But I do need to get back to Denver and try Bierstadt.

I'd love to have Prima or Pivo near me. They're theoretically distributed here, but never on the shelves. Just from my purchases alone, they would sell better than the $20/4 pack TG double IPAs that get thrown away every week at my liquor store because they sit on the shelves for months.

You should definitely go. I bet you wouldn't want that fresh German Pils from the source to sit for a month or two to clean up.

    Widely available?

Rothaus, Wurzburger, Ayinger, Kulmbacher, and Neumarkter Lammsbrau Organic Pils come to mind.

Although Rothaus is probably the only one I can reliably find kinda sorta fresh. The others are either old, aren't dated, or aren't at my liquor store anymore.

I mostly have these on draft to be "safe".

The majority of my German beer drinking is the same - draft.

    Cheers!
