I thought this thread was going to be someone ripping on Rogue for releasing stupid, disgusting beers and pairing with Portland businesses who shouldn't be associated with craft beer. For the record: I have been to Portland several times and I love Voodoo Doughnut and Powell's Books so I'm not hating on them I just think they don't deserve to be in the craft beer world.

I was thinking that this was going to be brewed with wild yeast found on the pages of a first edition or something. While not as whacky as the beard beer, it ultimately sounds more drinkable and enticing.

However, it's nothing resembling that level of effort. I'm all for letting Rogue brew what they want and for collaborating with local businesses, but hell guys, this purely symbolic gesture would be better used in a batch of homebrew... or a pilot batch for local pubs only. Refusing to mention the style or any beer-related goals in the entire press release tells me the beer itself isn't meant to wow us.

Edit: they don't even mention a style on their own website store. On the plus side (I guess) it's cheap.

As long as your target demographic is talking about you (and in this case, you are) then you're doing something right. Rogue is getting exactly what they want with this thread which is a buzz about their product among the people who purchase their products. Hate on them all you want, but that's smart marketing.

    1) Rogue is probably in a small way saying "fuck you, I've got yet white whale right here!" To beer geeks.

    2) They have evidently run out of creative ways to make beer low quality and high priced, so have turned to gimmicks instead of brewing experimentation.

Either way, I roll my eyes at Rogue

Would have been better if they did it with a bible and used holy water.

They should charge $50 a bottle and call it Rare White Whale Ale. I'm sure the attitude here would change real quick

But then they'd have to age it on the novel for TWO WHOLE YEARS!

Pubic hair. And it'd be nice to at least hear what the beer will be like a little bit....? Is that out of line? or do we merely have to beer geek out to the mere idea of a beer these days and not worry about what it actually smells/tastes like? Just sayin....

That being said I'll probably try one. haha
