#2 beer today is staying with my Wisconsin theme:

The Brewing Projekt Flow Citra Pale Ale
    ABV: 5.3%
    IBU: NA

Citrus aroma - grapefruit, orange, other tropicals. Aroma is not too strong, but very pleasant when you get down near the top of the glass.

Very hazy burnt orange color with plenty of visible carbonation. relatively tall, slightly off-white thick head from a semi-vigorous pour, with a leisure pace of dropping and some thick lacing just above the top of the receding head.

Flavor is bigger than the aroma, following the same flavors as in the aroma, but more dynamic. Pineapple, other tropicals, and grapefruit. Medium bodied toward the thin side, which is as expected for an APA.

Easy drinking and smooth initially, transitioning to a nicely bitter middle and finish. The bitterness lingers on the tongue into the aftertaste.

This is an excellent APA, but the beer is priced with the haze premium. (i.e. it is overpriced for a 4 pack for what it is. pseudoSue, for example, is better, and is priced at 2/3 of this beer's price.)

A cold sidelined me for a few days, so I'm starting with something light: Weldwerks Key Lime Pie Berliner. A 4% berliner weisse with ingredients designed to taste like, you guessed it, key lime pie. This gets bonus points for tasting exactly as advertised without being sweet or taxing and for the light, airy nose that reminds me of the Jersey shore (the good parts). I gave it a BA score of 4.31/5 which seems high to me but I'm rating to intent.

Happy NBS! Haven’t posted on this thread in over a year I think. Figured I’d jump back in today. Beautiful Sunday and a great pool day. I’m lucky in that a lot of other dads at the pool are very into craft beer, cornhole and horseshoes so the adults have a lot of fun too.

Anyway, this one is super new as I just came home from buying it from the brewery. In the land of Other Half I’m glad that I can still get tasty beers from places like Magnify, Kane and Carton for $10-$15 instead of $20 and over.

    Magnify- Only a Spark.

Dark orange appearance- the standard haziness.
Smells a bit like grape juice/white wine.
Tastes a bit spicy and again has a bit of white wine flavor from the Nelson hops. Slight citrus.
Really refreshing, slick mouthfeel. I’ve gotten some really nice 5-7% ABV beers from Magnify lately. This one is a refreshing summer ILA.
    Cheers!

    Returning from a wee absence from the NBS activity, and another oddball beer i am proud to present with this;

    Decadent Coconut Almond Macaroon IPA

    4.04/5 rDev -0.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Golden hazy with a thinnish white head, nose is not at all predictive of the taste since all I’m getting is an earthy, grassy bitter. No hint of the oddball ingredients just yet. Taste is where things happen. First up is a soft almond that exits as the wicked alcohol wave crashes in, wrapped in the coconut. Once the coconut fades, a slightly citrusy bitter, dry finish wraps up this boozy experience. Very good and a surprisingly well built departure from every other NEIPA I’ve had lately.

Poured from a 16oz can marked "canned on 06/03/19".
Pours out hazy light straw (strikingly similar to the light gold stripes on the can). Frothy white head that looks firm as hell. However that head does not last as long as I imagined, but laces the glass nicely past the last drop.
Nose is bright, lemon rind without a hint of malt.
Taste is also light without a hint of alcohol. Lemon rind, but the malt is there as it leaves your tongue.
Body is light with appropriate carbonation.
Overall a refreshing "session" NEIPA. Practically a lawn mower beer.

My next Belgian-not-Belgian is a “grisette.” This is a very hazy beer. All I could get from this was lemon juice. Just damn lemon juice. Hated this beer. Unless something comes along that really pulls me in, I’m done with Edmund’s Oast.

Did you hack my phone and steal the pics? Pretty sure that's the falls we did when we were last in Portland. Your hometown came up in discussions yesterday, but it might be a little too weird for us. We're quite happy to have family to visit there, though.

    ---

On to my contribution this week, which is not local, from my state, nor from a state which I have lived (which only eliminates four, actually) or have visited. I did review a couple new local beers earlier this week, though (a pretty good old school moderate IPA and a peanut butter porter that just is).

Another Jester King beer for me, a brewery that makes dry saisons, usually with a little funk or tartness, that I like. Today's offering brings the tartness in the form of added ingredients: local lemons and limes.

The lemon and lime jump from the glass once I can get my nose into it without frosting it. The added ingredients are a little too strong in the nose for me, as they restrict my ability to get to the other aspects of the beer: yeast, malt, and hops.

The taste had me thinking it would be a carryover from the nose, but luckily it was just the opening note that did that. The dusty attic, hay, and light funk come through by mid-taste. A herbal bitterness ends the taste that took a few sips to get used to but I sort of liked it by the bottom of the glass.

This wasn't my favorite offering from this brewery, as I stated in my official review. It's also nowhere near making me think twice on the next Jester King beer I run across. Cheers!

    howdy all,

This year's Sierra Nevada Okto "finally" showed up here and I've got it in front of me right now. For those who haven't followed the dedicated thread it's a collab with Bitburger this year, clocks in at 6% ABV, and calls itself a "festbier whose rich amber color, secret hop blend, and smooth malty favor bring the Munich tents to you". I'm not sure whether they are trying to suggest this is halfway between the modern, lighter "festbiers" and a more traditional amber marzen, but that is the interpretation that jumps out at me.

I've really liked a couple of the previous collabs and found a couple others sort of "meh", but I can't recall which years have been which. Let's see what we've got this time.

Look: Clear and bright amber color with a small head that disappeared before I had much chance to judge it.

Smell: Bready malt. A bit of nuttiness. Faint hint of a metallic/coppery smell. As it warms I'm getting a bit of a strange smell that might be the "sour" note some others have mentioned (almost a little like warm milk?). The overall aroma is a bit fleeting along with the head.

Taste: Blind I might have guessed this was more of a typical American amber ale rather than a marzen styled festbier. There's a pleasant but sort of generic malty breadiness and not much else. Some faint bitterness on the backend. Thankfully the copper on the nose doesn't come through on the taste, and I'm not picking up any of the sour notes either.

Feel: Seems a little thin for a marzen. It also seems very under carbed - to the point where I wonder if I've got a wonky bottle. Check out the picture below for how sad it looks in the glass after only a couple minutes. Mouthfeel is still kind of crisp even with the lack of carbonation.

Overall: Someone over in the dedicated thread described this as "very drinkable" and I think that's the best thing I can say for this as well. Pleasantly simple tasting and goes down easy, but not really that much to chew on. The biggest issue for me is the carbonation, and I'm going to be curious to see if this remains the case with the other bottles. You could certainly do worse for a beer you're hoping to drink by the liter though I suppose.

    Cheers all!

L-The beer pours a hazy orange-yellow with a 4 finger off white head. The head recedes to a thick film leaving islands of lacing behind.
S-The nose is orange flesh, pith, and pine. The pith rides over everything while still, but the orange comes out on the swirl.
T-The orange is first on the palate with the pith coming forward and combining with the orange through the middle. Late you get more pith and a touch of pine in the aftertaste.
F-Mouthfeel overall is on the thicker side of medium. Carbonation is light after the initial pour. The beer is just slightly bitter giving it a lightly dry finish.
O-I'm honestly slightly disappointed here given the high ratings. It's good don't get me wrong, but not so much as the rating would have you believe. I'd happily drink it again. Recommended, but keep your expectations in check.

Beach haus belmartian India pale ale with strawberry, banana, and lactose
    ..cloudy orange peel color
...around a medium body, I think the lactose gives it a bit of a thick feel. Medium carbonation
..a less than overpowering aroma of strawberry, banana, white sugar, followed by a very small amount of hay and grass
..taste is stronger than aroma, mild sweetness, fruity with the strawberry being more prominent than the banana
...overall this was like an IPA-light- mixed with some fruit cocktail..but I have to admit I enjoyed, wouldn't get it again but it was interesting [IMG]

Excellent burnt orange body topped with a thin yet creamy head. Very fine aroma; some cherry-like notes with a biscuit and cracker malt undertone; a bit of tangy punch to the nose. Rich and complex flavor; deep cherry tartness and sweetness; sour; some cereal grain notes hidden deep in the taste depths. Heavy body; oily but with an acidic bite; somewhat sweet yet also has a dry edge.

This is a very impressive cherry sour ale. I can't say I pickup any mango presence, but the cherry addition is nicely done, not too over-powering. This beer makes for a fine hot summer day refresher.
    ------------
Like an old bluesman, wherever I lay my hat is my home.

I love living in Colorado if only for the scenery and beer scene, yet the Front Range is getting way too crowded and the political direction things are going. In many ways, I'd love to move back to north central Ohio, somewhere rural or semi-rural, but the main things holding us back would be my wife's separation from her sister near Denver and the closeness of her former school co-workers. On top of that, she wouldn't like the humidity. And, much like Colorado, overcrowding and politics would remain an issue with me.

Our house is paid for, we're nearly fully retired (my wife is this year, me next year), we live in a good neighborhood, and do have some great friends and neighbors to hang with when we're not off doing our own thing. So I guess we'll remain here. With so much upcoming free time, travel to other parts of the country (possibly for extended stays) will be an option. So with that said, I think I'll contemplate my second beer for the afternoon (either a Pliny the Elder or Blind Pig).

Life ain't too shabby where I'm at...

I forgot to mention a part of of this story. I also had to listen to all the music going out over the air on my shit. An unexpected cessation of sound said, “Reset things, now!” (Folks who have their Beethoven’s 9th seriously interrupted during the Ode to Joy get a bit upset.)

I started off not liking Opera at all, but after 2-3 years of Saturday at the Met or Operas in the station library I had learned that understanding the words was the least important part of enjoyment.

    Thus, Mozart.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Samplers and commentators. It's been another beautiful summer weekend in North Jersey with warm temps, low humidity, and lots of sunshine. Perfect outdoor beer drinking conditions. Ouroboros is a collaboration between Carton and Equilibrium - not too shabby a pedigree. It's a 10.% TIPA brewed with, among lots of other ingredients, honey malt, Kolsch yeast, and Citra, Enigma, and Ella hops. It reminds me a lot of an Equilibrium DIPA in appearance and feel. But the Kolsch yeast and interesting grist bill points to Carton. This is awfully good! Here's my full review:

    4.4/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Canned on 8/7/2019 and poured into a snulip glass. It pours a turbid, brownish tangerine color with a lovely, thick, creamy, eggshell colored head and thick lacing. The fragrant erupts when the can is opened and features lemon, lime, onion, honey, oats, resinous pine needles, and floral hops. It's very dank. The taste opens sweeter and fruitier than I anticipated. At the beginning there is lots of honey, oats, and sugary cream, followed by lemon, grapefruit, and tangerine at mid-sip. The Kolsch yeast adds to the interesting flavor mix. There follows a wash of dry, spicy bitterness from the Enigma and Ella hops with some white wine notes. The flavors are bold and compliment each other well. This ale has a thick, almost chewy feel with moderate carbonation, and there is no mistaking the 10.1% ABV. It drinks like a plush, creamy TIPA. Overall, this is a very unique and flavorful big IPA. You can tell that Equilibrium played a role in brewing it as the look and feel reminds me more of Equilibrium's DIPAs than one brewed by Carton. But the Kolsch yeast and playful grist bill indicates Carton's involvement.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) on this fine summer afternoon. Cheers, NBS!

This is my third and final pepper stout today. All courtesy of @brutalfarce

Much thanks to you Bill, for helping me broaden my pepper stout horizons. It’s really been great trying and describing three beers in the same category that are really quite different from one another. My palate could sure use some rest, or at least some hops!

I saved this one for last because it is BBA and contains habanero.

Look: This beer pours opaque, pitch black with a light brown two finger head that settles to a thin layer across the top of the beer. Initially, a curtain of foam covers the edge of the glass. Some lacing in the end. No visible carbonation. An inviting stout.

Smell: Very creamy coffee, topped with nutmeg and cinnamon. It’s hard to decipher where the bourbon barrel treatment comes into play. You can smell the habanero oil through everything. It has an earthy green pepper aroma that comes across as leafy and vegetal.

Taste: Creamed coffee, along with the cinnamon and nutmeg, but this beer is dominated by the pepper flavor. Not the heat, but the flavor of the vegetable. Vegetal, green peppery, grassy. This is the hottest of the three I’ve had today but still quite tame. I put the heat at 6 / 10. It lingers on the palate for sure. Milk chocolate, cocoa and fudge brownie. These flavors really help add some complexity and depth to the beer.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation. Semi sweet beer. Moderate to high habanero pepper heat that lingers.

Overall: An enjoyable stout, but I think I prefer the use of peppers that don’t impart as much heat. The spice is pleasant for me, as beer is concerned. It lingers, but remains bearable.

Note: This beer was bottled on 9/27/2018 and I’ve never consumed it fresh
