What I do is squeeze them. If they are mushy it is to early. When they are ready , they crackle. Pick one if it crackles and break it open. Near the stem where all the cone leafs are attached is a yellow substance called lupilin. Usually a bit sticky and it's what gives the good flavor/scent. Use fresh if you think they are ready or dry and seal up for another day.

Lots of utube vids on this and more scientific methods if you want.

Took some good pictures of my cones today... need a better photo sharing website as face-hole doesn't really allow sharing anymore...

I used photobucket for a long time, but for several reasons they became a chore. Imgur is my current photo-sharing service du jour.

A friend of mine has the old Brewers gold hop. Looks like it will be a bumper crop of big fat cones. Unfortunately I have never made a good beer with them.

Main reason for posting this is these plant are very strong, need no extra TLC, seem to be resistant to molds and yeild better than cascades, which do the best for me. Maddening they make poor beer

Brewer's gold is like one of the top breeding hops for all the "modern" verities.

    Here's those shots i mentioned:

Here's a thread link https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/trouble-with-uploading-images.620136/ that discusses pic hosting sites. Imgur.com has been very popular, and it's the one that I normally use, although it's been awhile since my last use. However, discussion in this thread makes it sound like it might have changed for ease of use. A site that I have not tried yet, https://postimages.org is mentioned as an easy one to use.

I'm on my 2nd year of Cascade and Centennial, so far no cones. First year didn't produce any either. Maybe mine a late bloomers?

Maybe you got bad plants or it's the location. I'm on the CT border and have a lot of cascade cones.

Can't believe it. There are actually two lonely hops on my first-year crystal....we cookin' wid gas now :stuck_out_tongue:

A follow up on my post here about side-bines:
Some of them are now 24" - 30" long and don't exhibit any signs of burr potential. I can't help but think those are taking nutrients and energy away from cone development along the main bine, and should be removed.
    Am I wrong?

I use imgur often and have for quite some time. I haven't noticed any changes in terms of user friendliness. Actually, they make it very easy. When you're viewing one of your photos, just click on "direct link" and it's copied to your clipboard, suitable for pasting into a BA post "Image" dialog box.

Hmm... I would wonder what I got for plants, not saying that it couldn't happen, but it seems odd. Details on where purchased, and care you have given them, if you don't mind sharing. Also they don't have actual flowers on them do they?

If they are really first year plants, I would leave the lower growth, particularly if all you have is a few cones. This will aid in the roots getting what they need to survive and come back next year. If it were earlier in the season, I would suggest pruning back the whole bottom 3-4 feet of the bines as much as you can to help support the cone producing top of the plant. But on first year plants, I let them do mostly what ever as long as they don't get sick.

That's identical to the way I do it too. Maybe the other posters who wrote about recent changes are doing it wrong.

They're fist year from MoreBeer rhizomes that were planted late, didn't get in the ground until early June.
Too late to not cut back the bottom 3' - 4', did that about a month ago. But it is what it is, and I'm still tickled to see even a couple of cones taking shape.

If they grew like that then you are good. After a few of my plants did not come back after the same kind of pruning last year, I figured I would let their replacements kind of do their own thing. And it paid off. I am sure I could of gotten more cones on them, but figure good roots make good plants.

All my rhizomes are from more beer. No troubles except the perle hops that died on year 3, an I do t know why,

As always I'd be doing a soil test first , then contact the seller of the rhizomes an bitch if the soil test indicates all is well.

No to rub it in but my hops look very good , in general, this year. Paying attention to your yard an everything in it can lead to good or great results.

Flying by the seat of yer pants seldom does.

    Good luck

Drying the first Columbus hops. To early, but they were in distress and wanted so save what was ok. First 5 gallon pail in the dryer.

All the rest currently are maturing fine.

They do in Maine. I am actually bringing most of my crop to a local brewery since my drying abilities have been compromised due to a basement flood....
