It was dry and crisp, not sweetish and muddled with ferment and corniness.

Too bad the short lived reboot failed so miserably. Yeah, I read the reviews.

Shiner Sea Salt & Lime Lager. I would have bought this all summer long if they had brewed it again. The Lemon Pils is okay, but I'd rather have the SS&LL.

The Rheingold brand has been rebooted at least 3 times in Metro NYC. The last time the people trying admitted they modernized the recipe. It fell flat on it's face.

It was also brewed in... Mexico.
(DRINKS AMERICA was the company that also marketed Willie Nelson Old Whiskey River Bourbon and Trump Super Premium Vodka).

And here some in the industry thought NYC metro region people wouldn't buy it after Schmidt's bought the brand and brewed it in Philadelphia and then Heileman bought them and moved the brewing to the Carling plant in Baltimore.

For some reason (mostly nostalgia) I was partial to Rheingold 16 oz. deposit bottles, sold in a plastic bag with a pull string, brewed at their subsidiary brewery in New Bedford, MA (originally Dawson's). Drank a lot of them while building a cabin in Maine.

I guess Chug-a-Mugs come second (I soured on them when they went to a 10 oz. bottle :astonished:).

Rheingold brewed a lot of Jacob Ruppert/Knickerbocker in NB after they bought the brand in the mid-60s. New England was once Knickerbocker's largest market, despite the name and the original ownership - Col. Ruppert owner of the NY Yankees.

Drank a lot of Rheingold in the 70's. Had their Scotch brand Ale in NYC once and thought is was rather bland. Piels and Trommers also had a lot of flavor. The brewery on 280 was always a welcome site when passing.

I've seen ads for it but thought it disappeared by the 1960s. Draught only? Their McSorley's (Cream) Ale was one of my favorites, especially after the mid-70s when they started bottling it again. Whenever I think about, I always say to myself, "Man, I did not drink enough of that!" Neither the Rheingold version or the Ortlieb and then Schmidt's versions.

Their ales? I'd guess the Trommers Ale was short-lived and not continued after the Piels purchase. Piels briefly had a Piels Draft Ale but, that, too, likely wasn't around long.

Yeah, I still always "look" for it up on that bluff, when I'm driving that highway... Don't think I've ever gotten off the road and drove the local streets. Given how most breweries were made up of a number of different buildings, often some of them still remain.

Just "drove around" the area via Google Street View and some building sure look like they date from that era. The legal address of the brewery was 119 Hill St. which looks to be a fenced off deadend now, so the Google Camera couldn't drive down it. IIRC before Trommers bought it after Repeal, it was the Orange Brewing Co. which ran into some "problems" during Prohibition. Used to be a website for the brewery operated by the family of the former owners.

I guess it lasted less than two years after Rheingold closed their Brooklyn brewery.

Everything from Heavyweight Brewing, but especially Perkuno's Hammer. I also wish it was as easy to find relatively fresh De Dolle and Rochefort beers as it was 5 years ago, but the public's tastes have shifted so much I'll often not be able to find them even in Belgian speciality shops.

The rest I miss are mostly bland nostalgia. I might not even like them now if they came back exactly as they were 10-15 years ago; I miss them because I miss the time during which I drank them. These are beers like Pete's Wicked Ale, Rogue's Honey Cream Ale, Young's RamRoad, and Flying Dog's Road Dog Porter.

I miss a handful but one that sticks out is the vol. 1 Truck Chaser by Wild Leap. Many other brewery's do their own version of an orange creamsickle IIPA but for some reason this one stood out over all the others. That or The Chill Beach Wave Hazy IPA by Creature Comforts also sits at the top of beers I miss

I haven't had it in 10+ years and I'm not sure what I'd think of it these days. But I used to love to drink Pyramid Apricot Ale in the summer when I lived out west.

Whenever I take a flyer on a fruited (non sour/wild) beer I'm more or less hoping for a recreation of my memories of drinking this. Unfortunately, I'm not very confident that even drinking one now would compare favorably with my likely rose colored memories .

1972 was our year of Rheingold. Our Guilford College cohorts made Rheingold Chug-a Mugs
the beer of choice and I learned to like it. It wasn't as good as Lowenbrau but it was better than Schlitz. Rheingold was a better than good beer.

But it could have been. In 1936, Liebmann Breweries, Inc. (brewer of Rheingold) hired Hermann Schülein who had fled **** Germany. Schülein had worked at his father's brewery in Munich, Löwenbräu.

Schülein, who eventually rose to be Chairman of the Board, was featured in numerous ads in the '50s - going to Germany to buy hops [below - 2nd from left but ya gotta love the farmer in the back], drinking Rheingold Bock (O.G. meeting the requirements of German law) and a number of ads featuring him and the reigning Miss Rheingold touring Rheingold's new California breweries (in LA and SF, which they bought from Acme).

Miss Rheingold was cool and all but the cans from Tennent's Lager, especially Penny, made me buy them though the beer was mediocre.

The Stone stuff that others have mentioned is sorely missed. Founders Pale Ale was another one I liked.

There are a lot of beers that are still produced but nearly impossible to get around me (Avery IPA, GF WCIPA, Pivo, SN Stout).

Agree with a few others who mentioned FW Double Jack and Stone OG. But what about FW Pale 31? I always enjoyed coming around to that one now and again.
