I'm surrounded by amazing breweries in southern California but I have Old Stump and Alosta Brewing both walking distance from my house. Have given them a fair chance always telling myself to keep trying to see if it was just a newbie stage but I just can not enjoy anything they produce. The IPA they brew specifically from both breweries is just on another level of terrible. Anyone else frequent these spots and feel the same way?

Atwater is the worst. Their IPAs taste like Clorox.

Founders has been in the news for some unsavory stuff locally (including race discrimination/hostile work environment lawsuit and a weird episode getting involved in our Governor's election and then retracting their initial statement), so I know some people who shit on them, but generally that stuff isn't widely known or talked about.

I'm not sure about Colorado because I've only lived here for a couple months. Back in NJ, I'll second Yale Terrace who consistently get bad/infected beer-type reviews, and also throw in Magnify.

Magnify is way better than Yale Terrace, but they were divisive in the NJ craft community. They were very much a "new"-but-similar beer every week hype-machine, and some of their hazy IPAs definitely suffered from chalky, astringent bitterness. But, multiple other beers I had from them were in 4.5/5 territory (a couple stouts and some of their more dialed-in IPAs). I think the general criticism was basically: over-rated.

Where in CO do you live? Fort Collins is known for breweries but I find 80% are average and only a few even flirt with "great". But readily available WeldWerks and great craft beer stores more than make up for it.

EDIT: Just saw your other response re: where you live.

Around here, really no one. The closest to local "hate" is probably toward Intuition, but even then, it's fairly mild.

In general, brewery hate seems to come from one of three places:

    1) The industry veteran. It's easy to hate on those who have been around for a long time, for a number of reasons (selling out, real or perceived; failure to innovate; familiarity breeding contempt).

    2) Trend-chasing. Breweries that are perceived as doing nothing more than chasing the latest fad in hype beers attract disdain (as well as long lines, so they're probably crying into their piggy banks).

    3) Bad beer and/or quality control. Certainly, this is an area where a poor reputation is well earned.

We don't have a lot of any of those categories here. Even when the local breweries aren't putting out the best beer, I haven't noticed a lot of impurities, and most of them are young enough to get the benefit of the doubt.

Farther south, it's naturally trendy to hate on Funky Buddha, but their beers are still consistently tasty, so .... you won't hear that hate from me. :grinning:

We love Prost over here! Trinity I would definitely list. We get a lot of small breweries that continuously bring us samples that we just have turn down every time but I wont bash the new guys.

though well-regarded for their beer, Mumford in downtown Los Angeles literally gets shit on due to its proximity to skid row

I don't know anyone who supports Trinity, due to the bad attitude of the founder, and at times mediocre beer for top-end prices, combined with the wide distro they went with. Their beers usually end up in clearance bins here.

However, the recent transplants to the area don't know about the history, and it seems there is no lack of support in their taproom. It's near the center of a large city, so there's lots of traffic.

There's also a vacuum of 'leadership' in the local craft beer scene. No one has stepped up to put them out of business.

As @eppCOS mentioned our local beer scene is pretty weak at the moment. Far too many mediocre breweries are surviving without needing to innovate.

Because the craft beer consumers in the Colorado Springs area are happy/satisfied with the locally produced products?

    Cheers!

Well, I'll put it this way. If you are not satisfied, you'd have to drive to Denver for better beer, which is at least an hour away. So you're not going there on your way home from work.
It's not like people are going to stop drinking beer because they don't think the local places are world class.

I would suggest that another option to drink your draft beer at a craft beer bar that serves non-local craft beer.

And while you are home drink non-local packaged beer.

The above is what I would do if I lived in Colorado Springs and I was personally not happy with the local beers. Plus I am a homebrewer so at home those would be the beers I'd drink.

    Cheers!

Which is pretty much what I do here, and I can only suspect others do too. I think with some spill-over effect from Denver, things are looking up. It's just a little frustrating that it takes this town twice as long to figure out how to make good beer (and yes, good food). I can only hope that Cerberus serves as a kind of incubator for spreading brew-knowledge-seed into future breweries nearby...
Cheers, y'all. Good to be home, nevertheless, in COS!

Pittsburgh is steadily improving. I visit every 2-3 years. When i visited around 6-7 years ago i was extremely underwhelmed. Thr last time i visited (last September) I was pleasantly surprised by dancing gnome, and enjoyed hitch hiker. A lot of the breweries are still very mediocre, but they have some that are promising

The good news is that Sly Fox is now (or very shortly) brewing in Pittsburgh.

Maybe this forum is more west coast-focused, but I can't believe it's taken 2.5 pages and no one has mentioned Trillium yet! While they still make great beer, starting last November, they have been sh*t on potentially more than any brewery in the country!!! At least from of local perspective. I still go there, still drink their beer, still trade their beer...and I'm not going to beat a dead horse about all bad things there are to discuss...but they certainly are among one of the key offenders in this discussion IMO...!

Were they the ones dumping actual tequila in their beers or was that another brewery?

I do not live in Massachusetts and I do not participate in the New England forum so I have no idea what you are detailing here. Would you will willing to provide a summary of events here so we non-Massachusetts BAs have an understanding here?

    Cheers!
