@John_M If you're looking for a fresh hop lager that is as different from its base as FH Workhorse is from regular Workhorse, I can't help you. I haven't found it yet.

I will also point out that MOST fresh hop beers fail to clear that particular bar.

But if you want a fresh hop lager that has an easy-to-spot fresh hop presence that is delicious and separate from the regular hop character in a lager, I nominate Baerlic Hellsner. The last time I had it, Hellsner tasted "green" in that lovely way that only fresh hop beers do.

I appreciate the recommendation and will look for it. I seem to recall either you or someone else recommending it last year, but unfortunately, I never was able to try it.

"I will also point out that MOST fresh hop beers fail to clear that particular bar."

Unfortunately, this is only too true, but when you do come across one, it's almost like having an epiphany. I still remember vividly the better FH beers I've had over the years, and am already looking forward to this year's FH events in Hood River and Oaks Park.

I probably deserve to be made fun of over this, but the truth is I appreciate your recommendation and intend to search it out. Regular Occidental pils is pretty damn good, so I can't imagine the FH version can be all that much of a chore to drink (even if I'm unable to detect the FH character in it).

I actually wanted you to provide some examples so I could try to find them myself and see if I agree with your assessment. As I indicated in the initial post you responded to, I haven't had much success finding FH lagers where I could detect the FH character, but that I planned to keep an open mind about them, and was hoping to come across some at some point (you'll recall that I didn't say I had never come across one). Another reason I was hoping you could provide some examples, is that I thought it was possible you might have had one that I had also had, which would then suggest that we just have very different expectations and tastes when it comes to FH lagers. I typically go to 2 or 3 FH fests each year, and have tried a fair amount of FH lagers over the years, so that was certainly a possibility (unfortunately, I don't think I've tried any of the 3 beers you listed). If those beers are made again this year, I'll keep an eye out for them and definitely snag a can/bottle.

To respond to your initial "desperate" concern, let's just say I was a bit puzzled when you didn't provide any specific examples, in light of the following questions in my post:

"What do you feel those "results" consist of?"

"If you've had the chance to sample a fh hop version of a lager and then the same lager without fresh hops, are you able to tell the difference?"

You still didn't respond to those questions of course, but that's OK, I appreciate you providing the information you did, and I don't want to upset you further. Have a good afternoon/evening.

Any of the fresh hops going to be canned I should be on the lookout for when I come up to Seattle the 1st week of September?

Some. Ft. George and Culmination come immediately to mind. Plus Double Moutains killer green and red are bottled.

Early September might be a bit early for those beers. Not sure they'll be out by then, but I would keep an eye out for them.

Stopped by Occidental after work and tried their fresh hop pilsner. What made it more interesting was that I ordered a 4oz pour of the normal pilsner. There was not a massive difference but it was definitely quite noticeable and I quite enjoyed it.

I hope some of those cans make it over to the Beaverton location this Thursday.

    Kegs would be nice too.

I guess Mrs. vurt and I will have to drop by this Thursday, just in case.

I'm driving to Oregon on Saturday but heading straight for Astoria and further south along the coast so missing all this Portland fresh hop goodness. [sigh]

Might stop through the city next Wednesday, though. We'll see.

Let's come at this a different way this time. Has anyone ever had a FH Oktoberfest beer where you felt the fresh hops really added anything to the aroma or flavor profile? By that I mean, did you feel as if you could detect that the beer had been made with fresh hops?

If the answer is yes, can you recall the name of some of those beers?

I liked the Level FH Oktoberfest last year, it was an improvement over their regular Oktoberfest.
