Happy Sunday, NBS crew! Enjoying my last day of summer freedom with this beer from @larryi86 . I’ve never had a caged DFH beer before, so excited to see how they handled it.

    Synopsis:
This is the best dogfish beer I’ve ever had. The raspberries pair perfectly with the multiple wine barrels, creating a tart, funky, but not too sweet adult dessert of a beer. The best thing about this beer, though, is the crackery malt that takes over midsip. It reminds me of the Burley Oak Jreams...it’s intense, and I love it. Very little detectable booze. This is a winner. Thanks again Larry!

    Hey what's going on!?

Where did this awesome weather come from? Just gorgeous. Sorry folks but I am not hanging out on my pc all afternoon today I am getting outside!

But i will have tasty brews!

What's new for our hero? oh boy this is a doozy...

    Seriously what the puff??

Bruery Terreux / The Answer - Bruesicle: Red And Blue Puffsicle

Poured from the can into a Bruery tulip glass.

This thing looks like straight up beet juice. Deep purple red, and a big thick body. Vibrant dark pink head, that forms litteraly in slow motion. I mean the bubbles that are trying to cascade up are physically stuck. Never seen anything like this at all. This litteraly looks like it's been in a blender and someone was making carrot juice, but used beets instead. It even looks like pulp is hanging off the glass in lacing. It's a neat color, but this appearance wise really looks like something I would never put to my lips. Head eventualy dissapears and you are left with a sludge bomb.

The nose is a good solid fruit wild aroma. Thick raspberry to blueberry, to strawberry mashed puree. There's a touch of the wild yeast kicking in here as well, but it seems no joke, like it's physically stuck. I do understand this is different, but it's a very good thick aroma. Smells extremely jammy.

The palate if I could describe would be different. Mild touches of funk, and a surprisingly light malt backbone that is plenty supportive of the large fruit flavors. I would have thought on first sip this would have been a thick/syrupy/chunky mess but it isn't. Extremely jammy flavors of blueberry, with a very mild sensing acidity. There's also a good amount of sweetness in this that is just too candy like as well.

This tastes more like a smoothy than a beer, with very little beer character going on let alone anything Belgian that I can tell. Drinkable but also weird and a bit sweet for my tastes.

    Zero Gravity - Bobolink

Today I’ll be featuring some saisons of the fancy-shmancy variety. First up is this beauty.

This beer is a hazy gold. It’s extremely dry. It’s dominated by yeast and hops. Tastes of white wine, underripe peach, white bread. This beer is convincingly Old World. It’s terrific. Between this and Cote De Champlain, Zero Gravity is making outstanding US takes on Belgian beer. The one thing I’m not a fan of is the prickly carbonation. I could drink a lot more of this.

    Right Proper - Astral Weeks

The next beer in my saison theme is this one. It’s listed here as a saison, but the brewer does not call it one. They call it a “dry-hopped foeder beer.”

It’s a hazy pale gold. Smells of lime. Tastes like it too. Light bodied, dry and prickly. There’s a gentle acidity that is balanced by a subtle bitterness... like the pith with the juice of citrus. There’s a cheesy, funky quality that is evident in the aroma that reveals itself after the initial impression. The full package is expertly done. Impressive.

That is a beer I get to enjoy every now and then. Sometimes the acidity is a bit more than others, but when the foeder wood is nicely represented, it's can probably compete with other of my favorite beers.

This morning’s new brew is Old World Levain, a Kvass style brewed with sourdough and “second-use strawberries “ (Fonta Flora Brewery). I was drinking this while working my own levain into pizza dough for a mid-week dinner.
The cloudy, peach colored bottle pour has almost no visible carbonation and an aroma of lemon-strawberry wild yeast funk. The flavor is very tart and follows the nose. There is a lot of lemon and the strawberries are notably present. The flavor profile is not complex. It is a bit one dimensional. I am pleased to have the opportunity to try this. At a 2.8%abv I definitely can try another brew or two too!

Next up, and sticking with the hazy theme, I've got Hubbard's Cave Fresh IIPA - Mosaic.

Hubbard's Cave series of "Fresh" have been fantastic so far. Going on the Enjoy By premise, they prominently advertise the canning date on the label. Taking it a step further, they have a series within that series of single hop offerings. This one, obviously, is Mosaic.

Now, Mosaic is a tricky hop. I've had some fantastic Mosaic single hop beers, especially when it was new to the scene. However, like Citra, it definitely develops and morphs over time, and consequently it can be a bit of a surprise in any individual beer (or at any specific time).

Here, it really brings everything to the table at once. Citrus? There's some ruby red grapefruit, lemon, and mandarin orange. Tropical? Pineapple, papaya, and mango. Bright herbs? Pepper and oregano. Dankness? Indeed.

It's almost tough to keep in mind, when rating, that despite the fact that these tones aren't surprising anymore, they're fantastic. Sometimes, you don't need to reinvent the wheel; you just need to make a damn good wheel.

On the palate, this beer is no less revelatory. Thick sweet malt tones blend with a melange of Mosaic. Dankness shows around mid-sip, growing to a pretty potent pungency on the back third. I'm not a fan of dank leaf, personally, so I'm mostly rating to style here, but fans should rightfully go crazy over this presentation of the Mosaic varietal.

At 8.5%, the mouthfeel is reminiscent of some of the best IIPAs coming out of New England years ago. It's got a lively bite and some up-front bitterness, but it's thick, creamy, and smooth at the same time.

Unsurprisingly, this is a very well crafted beer. I'm a little surprised to clock in noticeably higher than @superspak on this one.

You're on Mute a 9% ABV Baltic Porter from Untied Brewing This Baltic Porter is a lager a point that the brewery makes clear. It also 1 of the 2 best beers they brew The other is an Imperial Stout. Both beers are plan janes no flavors added. This beer it served in a 10OZ Teku glass. It's black with a thin brown head. The aroma is of roasted malts and it powerful. The taste is the same roasted malts but also a nice bitterness from whatever hops are used. The mouthfeel is medium/full. The finish is dry. A very enjoyable beer. I had 2.

    Ommegang - Saisonztraminer

Now to feature two wine-inspired Ommegang saisons in their Co-Fermentation Project. This one is made with gewürztraminer “grape juice.” To start off, let me just say that I’m not a fan of the craft-classic Hennepin.

This beer is a gorgeous, clear, bright yellow, and it has a dense white head. Smells of light acidity. Tastes of white wine with some balancing hop bitterness. This isn’t a beer that is overloaded with wine influence from the ingredients. Despite all of the literature from the brewery, what’s here is a clear but supporting note to what could be a beer without unique ingredients. I think that’s a positive thing. Either way, the result is a very nice and enjoyable offering.

If I get to a couple of beers today, it's going to look like one of those mutli-leg trips where the first flight takes you so far out of the way of your final destination it doesn't seem to make any sense.

First stop is in California, starting in Paso Robles with a day trip to the Napa Valley. Most can easily guess that this will be Firestone Walker's Napa Parabola (vintage 001). As the box states, while Parabola "is typically aged in bourbon barrels, this variant was matured in retired red wine barrels." Specifically noted are Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc as well as Merlot barrels.

I thought I had a regular Parabola for comparison, but it appears I did not, so this will be a straight up review. I expect a bit more fruitiness than the regular beer, and I think the initial pour gave me a little nod of confirmation to that.

I did pour this fairly lightly, since I was splitting it into two glasses. As such, there wasn't much to the tan head. It twinkled on the surface and faded, leaving a nice design and a medium-thin collar. The near black body can be swirled to thicken that collar and leave a temporary slick on the glass wall.

The nose hits with a berry-heavy red wine scent, but it doesn't linger. The roasted malt, brings a rich chocolate, one that seems to sit between milk and dark. I get a little bit of spice - something that comes to me as graham cracker, oddly enough. The fruit note - some mix of blueberry, cranberry, and grape jam - threads through the stout notes quite nicely.

All the swirling to get more from the fairly complex nose has led to a creamy medium ring that left a couple small spots above the surface. The opening taste paralleled the nose with an up front flavor of wine and berries. The stout doesn't stride in as quickly, however. There is more tartness in the taste than expected, and that cuts through the chocolate flavors from the malt. The impression is like one of a fruit-filled chocolate bar where there is a bit too much fruit.

There is a little bit of that graham cracker in the middle, and a bit of an alcohol tingle. The beer is pretty slick, with moderate to light carbonation (perhaps made less with my earlier swirling). The back end finally allows me to taste the roasted malts more distinctly. A weird little herbal note (not quite mint, not really grass or pine) sneaks in back as well, something that clashes just a bit with the fruit notes.

I really liked the nose on this one, but the taste didn't come together as well for me. The wine barrel influence seemed a little too strong, taking over the flavors and not yielding back to the beer as much as it should, in my opinion.

I had heard somewhere that The Answer (or perhaps Mekong, originally) was using The Bruery sour series beers to make their on tap "popsicle" beers. If this is a canned version of those, I agree they do not have much beer character, and are really more of a beer cocktail. They can be are quite refreshing and fun to drink, though.

Our wedding anniversary is today. One beer, then relaxing with my wife.
I had a Rowley beer a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. Thought it was a good idea to try another.
This is Fields of Rye, a "French-style saison brewed with rye."
Gold color, very lively carbonation. Nice persistent white head.
Aroma of fruit and pepper. A little earthy.
Lemon, white pepper taste. Hint of funk.
    On the dry side.
    Nice beer.

    Trillium - Vanilla PM Dawn

Just back from a long hike in the woods here in Western, PA. It felt Fall-like at around 50 degrees when I left the house but soon warmed up. Worked up an appetite and a thirst. Sated my hunger with some crackers, cheese, tomatoes and watermelon. Slacking my thirst with this tasty brew!

A - Completely opaque dark brown with a 1-finger tan head that drops quickly leaving little lace.

S - Espresso latte with semi-sweet chocolate syrup

T - Rich milk and semi-sweet chocolate, plenty of vanilla, medium roasted grain, coffee, earthy spice. Moderate roasted bitterness. Very good

M - Medium-heavy body and light carbonation. Silky.

O - Excellent balance. Rich, desert-like without venturing too far into the overly-sweet pastry stout territory.

Overall rating for me is 4.34

    Belhaven scottish oat stout
    ...solid black appearance
... medium light carbonation which was more than I expected and felt too be a hair too much. Just over average body which resulted in a decent feel
..aroma is heavily roasted malts, fresh brewed black coffee. Theres oat, grain, and a slight bit of dark fruit
..taste is an even match of a lot of black coffee and the heavily roasted malts. Just like the aroma some oats, grain and dark fruit show up
...overall it may not be perfect but neither am I so I cut it some slack and label it as still very enjoyable [IMG]image hosting websites

    Tired Hands Flower Feeder

Happy Sunday, BAs. Thank you to @cjgiant for hosting again this week.

Today’s beer pours a hazed gold with three fingers of rocky, off-white head. It leaves thick, soapy lacing.

It has a restrained, floral aroma with light lemon, honey, wood, apple and soap.

It’s surprisingly dry tasting. More of the floral, soapy saison taste shows up front. It’s followed by the apple and honey sweetness from the nose mid-palate — with a little pear, too. It closes with a hint of wood and funk, and a sort of stony finish. It’s not really like mineral water; it’s more like drinking from dusty stoneware, even though I’m drinking from glass.

It has a very soft mouthfeel with light, prickly carbonation.

Maybe a bit too dry for my personal preferences, this is a tasty and unique saison that’s definitely worth a try.

Good afternoon NBS, starting off with a big side by side, hopefully I can make it to second NBS later. I had been sitting on a can of Tired Hands Gatherer for a year and figured that a side by side would be a really fun way to finally review them, so here it goes!

2019 vs 2018 side by side

    Appearance:
2019- Black with a two finger mocha head. 4.5

2018- Black with a small fast fading darker mocha head. 4.25

    Smell:
2019- Roasted malts, honey, chocolate, earthy, a little nutty, some coffee. 4.25

2018- Roasted malts, some dark fruits, hints of chocolate, some honey, earthy, a little nutty. 4

    Taste:
2019- Roasted malts, honey, touch of dark fruits/berries, chocolate, coffee, a little nutty, earthy, well balanced. 4.5

2018- Roasted malts, dark fruits/berries, some chocolate and honey, earthy, nutty, nice balance. 4.5

    Mouthfeel:
2019- Smooth, thick, full body, chewy. 4.5

2018- Smooth, full body, a little chewy. 4.25

    Overall:
Both are good stouts, but the 2019 is the better of the two (numbers are based on that). I don’t feel like the issue is the age difference. I feel like the difference in rating come for a difference what was found for this beer and the fact that the 2019 version is a little lower with the ABV and I think that it helps with the honey coming through.

L- The beer pours black and glossy. The head is 2 fingers of tan foam which recede to a thin film. Small amounts of lacing dot the glass.
S- The nose is chocolate, berries, and some alcohol. The berries from the port barrel are strongest and overlay the chocolate from the malt.
T-On the palate the beer blends quite nicely. There is the chocolate from the malt which is sweetened slightly by the rum barrel. There is a light berry presence which can be detected from time to time from the port barrels. None of the alcohol from the nose is present here.
F-Mouthfeel overall is medium. It could be thicker, but it's not outside the ordinary for a barrel aged beer. Carbonation is light letting the flavors linger on the tongue.
O- A nice barrel aged stout. A little light in mouthfeel, but the flavors are all there and mix with each other while keeping some complexity. Recommended.

    Mornin’ Latte from Toppling Goliath

The pour is cola colored and opaque in the glass. Tons of head, 3+ fingers, light khaki in color. Nose is not far off from my usual white chocolate mocha and very inviting. First flavor is decadent milk chocolate. The chocolate is closely followed by bitter roasty coffee. Then some lighter coffee flavors, like a latte with milk and cream. Delicious. The mouthfeel is thicker than I expected from the look of the pour, which was translucent. It’s on the thicker side of moderately thick, but not chewy at all. Creamy and slick. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this, as I have all the beers I’ve had the pleasure of trying by these guys.
