Not gonna lie, I really can’t stand hearing people geek out very loudly about beer in person. Especially if they are really misinformed or are coming off as cocky.

Maybe because I personally never really “geek out” unless I have to explain a beer for someone (cause it’s part of my job), or if someone just wants a casual chat about it. I always feel very uncomfortable once i pass the real “geeking” threshold.

If I do feel the need to geek out, I will usually do it very quietly and/or do my best to use layman’s terms when speaking with ones who might not be as informed.

How about people who fixate on and exaggerate this trend when most NEIPA drinkers also like other styles? If you only drink NEIPAs then yeah that's a bit ridiculous.

It's your money, buy what you'd like with it, especially if it's something you enjoy. Do not frown upon others who may not enjoy what you enjoy. There's plenty of beer to go around and plenty of options if you don't care for X.

What if someone also drinks other styles but gives extraordinarily high ratings to NEIPAs, such that they dominate the top of his rankings? That's very common. Is it fair (albeit in perhaps a hyperbolic* way) to say that may be a person who likes the taste of beer but prefers the taste of the contents of a juice box?

    * I think it's probably not hyperbolic in many instances. Many people like beer at least to some degree but ultimately prefer other beverages, be they wine or whiskey or hot chocolate or juice. I think it's quite plausible that many fans of the taste of beer are bigger fans of the taste of juice, the problem being that juice lacks the alcohol, social cachet, and hobbyist fun of beer. I strongly suspect in fact that the majority of Americans generally prefer the taste of juice to the taste of beer (broad though both of those tastes can be).

Added: If I, as an Islay whisky fan, went around saying beer would be better if it were unhopped, heavily peated, higher in alcohol, and barrel-aged, or if I saved my highest ratings for the beers that met those criteria, I think it would be fair to suggest that I would prefer beer taste "less like beer" and more like something else that I enjoy.

The worst is when people get in these forums and argue over absolutely nothing. Trying to prove their opinions as facts. Like what you like and don’t discount what others like.

It like two jackasses in a bar puffing their feathers out trying to look tough. Don’t mind me, I’m the guy talking with the bartender (and his girl) Cheers

    a) the world will end

    b) your beloved WCIPAs used to do exact same thing

WCIPA detractors used to make the same “this beer is for the lowest common denominator” type argument you are. It’s just in that case the “new money” spoiling things for the old guard were people without a refined palate who could only appreciate bigger=better. Now this has been substituted by people with a sweet tooth/infantile tastes.

In both cases wildly condescending nonsense.

So glad see many others feel the same way I have been feeling for years. As a former brew pub brewer from the late 1990’s I’ve been pretty embarrassed by the craft beer culture since the whole IPA thing got out of hand 15 or so years ago.

I’ve been bitching about this for years. The beer culture in the 90’s (and before) was about bringing a renaissance of classic beer styles. The more diverse the better. Not any more. We live in a beer monoculture of big over hopped stupid and clumsy beers. Everything is about the latest trend....the next more absurd than the last. Now we have “desert beers”. Pathetic.

I’ve all but boycotted most of the new American craft beer and went back to drinking the classics I learned on 25 years ago. Pilsner Urquell, Guinness, the classic British breweries, and Belgian beer. Also the American classics like Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Boston Ale, etc. All more elegant and sophisticated stuff than the junk they are putting out now.

It doesn’t take much skill to simply dump more malt and hops in a recipe.....or fruit, chocolate cake, maple syrup, bacon, Captain Crunch or what ever BS some neck bearded jack ass comes up with.

People reviewing a beer solely on whether they like it or not, with no consideration of the characteristics of the style. ie An all out DIPA lover hate ranting a Kölsch or Pilsner simply based on their taste preference.( I don’t care for sours personally, so I don’t buy and review them)

Most annoyances annoy me. So many people seem to think they know exactly "what beer tastes like/should taste like." And that concept is based on modern brewing techniques and styles from the last 300-500 years. Much wackier things than milkshake ipas and pastry stouts have been brewed throughout history. People have used whatever they had to make beer for thousands of years. Who are we to say which ingredients, techniques, processes etc make real beer? For a long time people drank beer from big bowls with a straw because all the grains were still in there floating on top. Broaden your perspective and maybe you won't get so annoyed.

    Hmmm.

Ok, I hate shaker pints, imo they suck as a beer glass, I understand they’re cheap, thick so they don’t break easily, and they stack nice. Other than that only as collectibles.

I hate when AALs get dumped on when comparing to better craft offerings. They’re not pretending to be anything more than they are, they serve a purpose, and it’s what most here cut their teeth on. Beers I like better? Sure, but the they all suck mantra gets old, and they don’t. Your not a better BA because you turn up your nose at Macro beers, but because you realize there’s other beers out there , and you understand it’s just a different style.
