Where in PA do you live?

What you are describing here is quite dissimilar to the craft beer scene in my area.

    Cheers!

Big ol' slobbering labs are great in a taproom, but leave the damn little yippy rat-on-a-rope at home!!!! A few weeks ago I was standing in line to get a beer when my leg felt wet - and a lab was licking it.

What annoys me most is going into a bar with 20 taps and not have a lager or red or brown ale among them. Everything is IPAs or light beers.

Disproportionate amount of shelf/cooler space allotted to IPAs in my area (outstate MN). Good selection of Brewers but I hate having to go store to store trying to find a "craft beer" that isn't an IPA. I like IPAs but jeeze, can't a guy get a good brown ale, black lager, red, Bock, or any rendition of a traditional style that's NOT an IPA? Too many fruit beers for my taste as well.

Ice cold beer. Quality lagers should not be served below 42 degrees and quality ales not below 44 degrees. The big guys spend millions of dollars a year to brain wash Americans into thinking beer should be served “ice cold”. This hides most of the flavors in the beer. If you can’t taste it, why drink it. A quality beer challenge should be started. Serve ales at 48-50 and lagers at 46-48 and see which ones still taste good. Quality ones will.

Are you serious on this one? No one has to wait in line at angry chair. If you get there when they start selling bottles (9am) you always get one allotment. They let people reline, so getting there early means you have more of a chance of hopping back in line. Plus the parking lot line shares at 7am are really fucking fun

They also do silent releases during the week that usually last at least a day in the taproom, so that way locals don't have to get up early on a saturday. There are plenty of breweries you could've picked on here but I think angry chair has some of the best run releases around

The "Latest WOW Beer" thread went over 5 years and 138 pages. Dare I add a link to it and potentially revive it after being silent foir a year and two days? Okay here it is in case anyone wants to revive it: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/latest-wow-beer.97302/

This, this right here is what annoys me about beer culture.

We get it, you don't like NEIPAs and feel personally insulted by their very existence. No one is forcing you to drink them. I don't like the taste of bret, so I don't drink beer made with bret - I don't insult the folks that do. Instead of complaining about beer you don't like, and insulting the people that do, why not just go out and find more beer that you enjoy?

Otherwise, I'm generally annoyed by the IPA takeover (NE and otherwise) of breweries and brewpubs. I'll walk into a tasting room or brewpub, see 12 beers on tap, and 9 of them are IPAs. Really guys? I get it, IPAs are super popular, but do you really need that many of them? There are other styles, you know. Would it kill you to have a stout, or brown ale, or kolsch, or wheat beer, or a Belgian on tap (and Belgian IPA doesn't count)?

I've given this some thought. There's really nothing about beer that annoys me. I love everything about the hobby. I love that there are so many local options, even here in a rural area. I love that I can go to the beer store and find great examples of lots of styles. There have been probably 10-12 nationally acclaimed breweries expanding into my state just this year!

I've had moments of being annoyed when I don't see new versions of classic styles and then I realize that there are world-class examples of those styles already available. Do I really need to tick a new brown ale, when I'm probably not going to like it better than Bell's Best Brown, or the local coffee brown from Taxman anyway?

Another local brewery has jumped on the "hype train" with fruited kettle sours, (not a style I enjoy) which was annoying at first. Then I realize that all that revenue is allowing them to expand, and they still make great IPAs (and pizza). And if I don't want the new styles, I can just drive down the road and find something I'd rather have at that moment. Then I think about the alternative... 8 years ago that brewery didn't even exist, and now they host an annual festival and are expanding as we speak.

I can't imagine there has ever been a better time to enjoy beer, and it hasn't even peaked yet.

I totally get where you're coming from - the taste of macro lager literally makes me want to gag. I'll chose water over it every time. But I haven't received any crap for declining them.

I wasn't going to add to this thread because I've participated in previous 'complaint' threads, but I've got a new one that hasn't been mentioned here yet. Here it is:

I get annoyed when I see what appears to be some self-involved 21-year old neckbeards standing in a group trying to out-impress, out-talk (out-yell) their buddies with their knowledge of the beers that they're drinking. All of that really is their own business, and that's all okay, but what annoys me about it is that they're standing right at the beer ordering station at the bar (or a beer fest), and you have to elbow yourself around them to get a beer. (Maybe they think it's an ordering station that's exclusive to them?)

The content of the final paragraph of your post explains exactly why people have a problem with certain styles and the hype around them: They crowd out other styles that many of us view as superior. The proliferation of NEIPAs and other sweet beers is what's making it harder to "just go out and find more beer that [we] enjoy."

I, for one, have said that NEIPAs have a place in craft beer, but as gateway beers -- today's equivalent of yesteryear's cream ale or golden ale -- to draw people into the hobby with their sweet, familiar, and accessible flavors. They are not, however, beers that should be considered the epitome of brewing prowess and achievement (mainly by people with limited familiarity with or interest in the wide array of styles and flavors available in beer) or that should dominate tap lines and shelf space through large swaths of the country. Sure, some people love 'em, but even more people love (or at least frequently purchase) Bud Light, and I'd prefer that those people's tastes evolved such that Bud Light had less market share too.* I certainly don't "personally feel insulted by their very existence," but I think it's good for craft beer and its enthusiasts for us to urge the many folks who come for the juice to stay for the beer by letting them know that there's more and better out there. To me, that's very much in the spirit of being a "beer advocate."

    * I've long opposed the trite "drink what you like" advice that so many people parrot around here. Sure, fine, everyone is allowed to do that, of course. But I'd rather encourage people to cast a wide net and explore, which quite probably will "improve what you like."

Real beer drinkers like the beers I like. People who like the types of beer I don't like don't like the taste of beer.

    Agree!

I had a beer last weekend that said "DRINK FRESH" on the label.. with no dating on it (neither did the rest of the 4 pack).

I've bought beers sold local to me, that are from a brewery 400+ miles away that say "DRINK LOCAL".

There is a brewer that I used to buy regularly, from a local beer store (mostly IPA's). They print stupid dumb-ass shit on the bottom of their cans..yet they never date them.

How would you know how wide a net they’ve cast based on “drink whey you like” ? Could be that net they threw they threw I’d wide and it brought them exactly back to that point, and right back to that statement. Drink what you like, it’s kinda like a shrug, like it drink it, if you don’t don’t. There’s no right or wrong here, just personal preference.

Do you know of any data that supports that claim, especially as it pertains to NEIPA?
