I look at it as this, if you want to diet and get skinny then beer drinking really does not fit the agenda. Beer is nothing but empty calories and leads to snacking and other bad habits which don't lend to a healthy lifestyle.
You can jog, bike, stop eating, etc. but the moment you end your offset items the weight comes back. Craft beer is very high calorie so each time you crack a nice juicy NEIPA you may as well be eating a small Ben and Jerry Ice cream.
    Now back to beer:stuck_out_tongue:

Try a rowing machine! I hate cardio (running, and even biking) but rowing is a great cardio activity that's light on my knees.

I'm wondering if we should have our own thread topic here on BA

I'm 33 days sober. I'm down 15 lbs. All of my apparent small health issues have subsided or completely disappeared. Beer is truly the devil's drink. Lol.

I took 50 days off two years back after my vacation. My plan is the same this time around. I kind of overdid it with my vacation time in VT this past early August.

It's nice to shock your body sometimes and just prove to yourself you can do something.

I still come here to read and talk beer. I still look at area brewery fb pages and release schedules. I don't feel deprived. But I can say with true confidence, healthy living and beer drinking is a very tough combination. I'm not sure I want to go back.

Horses for courses. I really want to like the rowing machine - low impact, upper body gets a work out- but loathe it. Time crawls by for me.

I tend to ride or run (outside unless the conditions are that bad - treadmill/stationary bike boring as hell).

I’d like to think I’m pretty healthy despite drinking a decent amount. Run or ride five times a week. 6’ 3” and usually around 168-170lbs. I’m 38 and can still knock out an 18 min 5k or a half marathon in the low 1hr 20’s. I’d say I eat a well balanced diet without being purposefully healthy or focused on a specific theme. Don’t do any sort of dieting. Cut loose at weekends.

I should have clarified more, that for those folks seeking a fast 20lbs off then back to drinking etc. it usually does not last/work. A lot of people always want to crash diet and lose 10-20 then resume the old habits and I just think it is a yo yo routine. I have been there myself so I have been part of that group. Its easy to stop beer for a month and drop weight then once you resume and stop the diet/exercise it just comes back on. Your obviously very into fitness and outdoors activities so for you its not a diet its your lifestyle so it works. I think your more the exception than the norm so cheers to you for your dedication.

We all know to lose weight is very hard and it takes a change of lifestyle both in nutriment/beverage and exercise. The intake of calories must be lower then what you burn etc.

I tried to add cardio to my powertraining, but i got injured and i just can't get into it. So after a while i went back to powertraining only. Since i have a dog i am forced to walk several times a day and slowly but surely my weight is dropping. Without dieting i am doing this and i still drink a fair amount of pints almost every day. But i hardly eat snacks when i drink, i avoid them all together also when i don't drink. Plus i never miss out going to the gym.

Not trying to brag, just saying drinking beer and losing weight is possible.

You just gotta work had and pick priorities!

I drink a shit ton and lost 60 pounds and am in pretty great shape. Just do intermittent fasting and work out and you'll get there.

I do Rushfit, the GSP home workout program.

Avoid bread/related baked goods and sugar and you'd be amazed at how much weight disappears while still having a beer a day.

People on here are making it much harder than it is. Find out your macros for weight loss, maintenance, or weight gain based on your daily activity and body size and proceed.

Small update. I hit day 100 over the weekend. No end in sight. Kind of crazy. It’s been easier dropping beer than sodas and junk food. My diet, save for beer, hasn’t changed much. My physical activity hasn’t changed much. Proud to say I’m at my lowest weight in 5 years. Down about 32 lbs.

The smell of beer still makes me sick. I think I’ve turned a corner. Not sure which one.

I will say. Maybe my diet has changed a touch. I vaguely remember drunken weekend nights where my appetite was just huge. So I ate, on top of the drinks.

it’s definitely all about the incoming and outgoing calories. It probably wasn’t the added beer calories that did me in. I think it was that extra drunken snacking binge.

Down 30 + lbs. . Up $1500 +. Give it a try guys. The real turnaround will be an improved diet and amped up physical activity and my weight may drop to 50-60. But I’m still trying to enjoy things. I don’t want to cold turkey everything.
I post this because the holidays are super tough. Weather in NM has finally changed. I survived watching football without beer. I always thought I somehow needed it. Lots of great options. I’m not against having a beer at some point soon. But it just hasn’t come up.

I started working out the Monday after coming back from New Orleans. So roughly 3 1/3- 4 weeks, and I’ve lost over 10 pounds so far. I have horrendous knees so I comfortably use a tread mill and I’m walking 3 miles a night 6 days a week. I only drink on the weekend, whatever I care to. I avoid all the sugars and breads and junk food. Oatmeal for breakfast, salad for lunch, protein drink for snack, fruit, lean cuisine for dinner 2-3 times a week, the other nights whatever’s left over from the weekend. I don’t like water per say, but I use Propel Fitness packets, zero anything. I also eat raw walnuts, cashews, almonds for nighttime snacks. I also use supplements, my main goal is lose weight and lower my blood sugars, they’re too high. I’m not suffering a bit, and my Friday martini is orgasmic. Can’t forget to live a bit, It’s a life style and if you can’t do it within reason it’s worthless. You want a beer drink one, you want a candy bar eat one, you just can’t do it to extreme.

My wife knows I won’t cut back on my beer consumption, but I agreed to cut back on carbs (food not beer) and go for a more lean diet. I’m training for a 5k, so between my training and food change, I’m slowly seeing the pounds drop (while not changing my enjoyment of beer). I’m happy with it so far. I know I could drop the weight quicker, by dropping the beer, but whoa, wait, what?!

Not sure if I've posted in this thread or not, but unfortunately beer consumption leads to me binge eating and craving carbs.

I can enjoy a beer or two without getting too hungry, but if I have more it's as if I haven't eaten in 5 days and the only solution is fatty, carb-filled foods. Doesn't matter if I ate beforehand.

I do drink too much, but the food part is probably what will be my downfall. I love a day off where I can have 3-4 beers then eat some unhealthy food that I otherwise wouldn't have touched. A dangerous habit that I know I need to break. I think I need to cut it down to 1 beer, hell maybe even 1 beer a day if I have to. I get the alcohol but don't get too much and I don't binge on carbs after.

I don't think I'm an alcoholic because I routinely go weeks or months without drinking, but there's definitely a part of me that's dependent. When I start associating alcohol+food as a "great day" I need to reevaluate things.

Alcohol reduces inhibitions, so that bag of Doritos is like crack sometimes, it’s there calling your name. Imo there’s a difference between a heavy drinker and being an alcoholic, doesn’t sound like drinking is a full time or even a part time job. If it’s not interfering with you living a normal life seems ok to me. Alcoholics gotta have it, have to drink to excess everyday not unlike a heroin addiction I suppose. Don’t buy the junk food, sub out nuts, or fruits etc. I’m cutting back to weekends, so I won’t deprive myself, I like martinis, bourbon, and beer, and I won’t give it up.

Despite my left knee and feet, I walk about 5 miles a day, and I'm just a bit above my college basketball weight. I'm 68 and my wife is 62. I really do think that gravity and time together make you shrink....We walk the dogs, do tons of yard work. We are active. And we love where we live.
